Why on earth isnt Hird hanging up the boots? He is an absolute champ of the game but his body obviously isnt up to it anymore, he has injury after injury and all his doing is preventing younger players the opportunity to step up and improve themselves. If essendon want him there because of leadership and presence, fine place him in an assistant role because he can do more good there than in the injury section of Doc Larkins reports.
Thanks for your opinion. Now run along to the Melbourne board.

It's a valid point. Let him have his say.
It was always going to be a 50/50 with Hirdy. He only played about 10 games this season but he is a champion, and in my look at it, 10 games from him is like 50 games from a lesser player. Mentally for young kids and physically with the amount of games he wins.
Hird won different games off his own boot this year. The guy is pure class still and besides the odd soft tissue injury his in and amongst it.
Also, i don't think he wants to go out after being injured for the most part of a season. Which is fair enough, he wants to play another full season with his mate Lloydy and thats cool with me.
Lets not underestimate the mental importance of him on the feild for us. Everyone lifts 50% when Hird plays. All the young guys look up to him.
If/When his in the box he can't be on the ground to explain something to a young kid, his right there, in the thick of the action. Teaching them like father to son. If we can get another year out of that, why not go with it.
Anyway, basically, the guy is a champion and wants to be able to play one more season, so let him. Lets just hope we can get a nice 15 games out him, at least.

That would be like us questioning Neitz as to why he continues to play half a season...surely it about time to give another young tall an opportunity to showcase his potential....see how stupid that sounds??
go hang yourself..... its best for all
No, I agree with the original poster. We should get rid of more of our players capable of picking up 30+ possessions and four goals. What the heck is our list management doing?

you dont get rid of champions. and his still good enough to play. i would rather have him in my team then anyother melbourne player.

he can teach younger players on the list the way the game should be played. i'd say thats a good reason why sheedy wants him player.

Why isn't he hanging up the boots?
So the football world can enjoy watching the greatest living player in the history of the Essendon Football Club run around for one more year. I for one will be attending every game in Melbourne he is even a sniff at being picked for.
He is the sort of player you tell your grandkids about.

Sums it up mate. :thumbsu:
As for that pic posted earlier of Hird at the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. Nothing wrong with that mate. Shows how much of an ambassador the great man is for our great game. ;)

Couldn't agree more mate, well said. As the picture above says, enjoy it while it lasts. Players like Hird come along once in a generation if that. Go to an Essendon game one day, and listen to the crowd whenever Hird gets the ball. They lift, cheer when he gets the ball. It's bloody unbelievable. A great feeling.
He is still good enough to play, pretty much every game he played this year he was in the best players.

It makes perfect sense - Hird and Sheedy will both get carried off after next years final EFC game.

Your all 1 eyes supporters, get a grip on life, hird is finished! and so is essendon you should of had the wooden spoon instead of carlton!

i think hird is hanigng out for a better 'send off' game than one at a sub-standard venue, against a team none of his fans rate.
ie - hird's real goodbye should be in a round 20 or so fixture against collingwood at the MCG. not us, at docklands.

explain. I thought the team with the least wins and worst percentage got the spoon. Wasn't that Carlton.
Try again.

Hopefully it is after we win the grand final. How fitting would that be.
What would a kid like Scott Gumbleton and Bryce Gibbs or even a player picked on our rookie list get from playing along side James Hird in his last year? Exactly the same thing the baby bombers got from playing along side Timmy Watson in 1993. These kids would walk taller every time they stepped onto the ground along-side Hirdy, we can't measure that sort of contribution in stats.

Jimmy Hird is LEGEND and all round nice guy.
The players respect and follow him although Hille has demonstrated superb qualities this season.

Best post on Big Footy for years.
One of the reasons he wanted to play on was that he wanted to play in a successful Esssendon team. Oh Boy,!

I think you meant to say he didn't want to leave Essendon when they are struggling, bit of a difference

Too true.
With Hird's last year i can't see us not making the 8. He wouldn't allow himself to go out without finals. It'll certainly be very interesting this year. :D

Hird and Sheedy, more than likely go out together.
