View Full Version : Arrogance of the Weagles - stronger than ever?

Seems as though it's gained momentum since last year, even though they couldn't handle the pressure on the big stage.

Where has this sudden burst of arrogance come from? The Swans are awesome and won the flag last year and still aren't arrogant one bit.

What is it with WCE fans and arrogance? What exactly have they got to be arrogant about?

Well that's a fair comment. Would they be? They aren't exactly a flashy type team and are hardly noticed. If they were more like the Brisbane squad of 01, 02, 03 or the Crows squad of 97, 98 then they wouldn't be so talked about but if they do go back 2 back, they definetly aren't going to be one of the better teams to do so.

Having said that, GO SWANS.

See, that's where your ignorance shines.......you're equating "flashy" and "good".

Try this.......Brett Burton on the weekend....flashy but when it counted?
Brett Kirk.......not flashy but you know when the games there to be won?

I know who'd I'd rather.

We are just arrogant enough to win a prelim. Maybe you guys should get that much arrogance.

They have the arrogance to believe they can turn nearly any game round in the second half. If other teams stop proving this right then maybe it will go away.

I doubt very much that any of the officials or players from the West Coast Eagles could be described as "arrogant". Are the fans "arrogant" ? That is a matter of perspective I suppose. Certainly the fans of the team that they defeated last week have a right to be dissapointed in their team's losing(but not in the manner in which they played!) but to describe the Eagles fans as "arrogant" because some of us think that the team is a good chance to win the grand final is hardly fair. I have no doubt that the Swans fans think that their team has as good a chance of winning the grand final as the Eagles (actually they probably think that they have a BETTER chance !) but I don't see any fans of other clubs calling them "arrogant".

Check out Trent Barrett. Now THAT is arrogance! The Storm were the minor premiers (in a canter) ffs!!

Dragons shed tears as Storm damage sinks in
Margie McDonald
September 25, 2006

THERE was so much confidence within the Dragons team that Trent Barrett did not bother packing a pair of jeans in his kit bag for Saturday night's elimination final against Melbourne.

He expected celebrations to be quick and confined to the Telstra Stadium dressing-room and he would be back in his tracksuit pants to head home for an early night.

Packing jeans would have meant finding a quiet bar with team-mates to drown his sorrows after a loss.

"I was so confident coming here tonight that I didn't bring any with me to go out later. I thought we'd win," Barrett said.

So devastated were Dragons players at their 24-10 loss to the Storm that their dressing-room looked like capsicum spray had been pumped through the air vents - everyone had tears.

Prop Luke Bailey waved reporters away at first, seeking a few minutes to compose himself. He then did interviews, but wiped away tears as he spoke.

"It's funny that something you love so much can hurt you so much," Bailey said. "No-one expects to lose and no-one thinks, 'what if we lose'? because we expected 100 per cent to win.

"It just hits you like a ton of bricks."

Sitting two cubicles down from Bailey was Shaun Timmins who, like Bailey and Barrett, is leaving the grand St George Illawarra club, which has the prime minister as its patron.

"Everyone wants to play in a grand final, win a grand final, so it'll always be a cloud hovering over me," said Timmins, who played in the losing 1999 grand final, coincidentally also to Storm.

"But I've had a great career here at the Dragons and met a lot of great people."

Together, Barrett, Bailey and Timmins have played 21 Tests and 27 Origin matches for NSW.

Losing that pool of talent will hit the Dragons hard. But what seemed to hit harder on Saturday night was the fact St George Illawarra this year had a much better chance of going all the way than the Dragons of 2005, even though personnel was the same.

The Dragons lost the same match last year - the preliminary final - to Wests Tigers. But the players feel they are a better side 12 months on.

"Last year we probably put too much pressure on ourselves and shot ourselves. I also don't think we were playing well at the end of the year," Timmins said.

"But this time we were more confident in our ability."

Barrett knew deep down that this year was his best chance at a premiership ring since 1999.

"I thought we were in good shape, yes," he said. "The last two weeks we played really well and I thought we defended well tonight. I think we could have quite easily won the game and gone on."

Coach Nathan Brown felt the disappointment as hard as his players. He played in three losing grand finals (1993, 1996, 1999) with the Dragons and has twice coached them to within one game of a grand final (2005, 2006).

"I've been waiting 27 years to do a victory lap, so if I have to wait 28, I'll wait 28," Brown said.

Despite losing experienced hands such as Barrett, Bailey and Timmins, Brown still found some comfort in the future.

St George Illawarra was the only team of the four 2005 preliminary finalists to make it two years in succession.

"We keep fronting up. We're the only club from last year back here again," Brown said. "If we keep fronting up, eventually we might get there one day ourselves.

"Sad at is, the great positive for me tonight is that last year some young guys who were quite disappointing at this stage of the year in (Ashton) Sims, (Justin) Poore and (Ben) Creagh were amongst our best players tonight.

"It shows they got a lot out of last year and they're going to be the new breed coming through. So all is not lost. It's just that a year is lost."

With Barrett moving to Wigan and Bailey to the Gold Coast Titans, Timmins may not be playing at all.

He was to go to Castleford if it did not get relegated in Super League but it did.

The Dragons say they are out of cash to re-sign him, but Timmins will not say he is retired.

"I think it's finished here at the Dragons, but I'll just wait and see," he said.

"I'll have a break and then talk to a few people and decide then."

He said he had not ruled out playing in the NRL next year, but was coy on whether he was seriously looking at a one-year deal with another club.

"I just need to have a break and then I'll see how things land," Timmins said. "I haven't had much time to think. I thought I wouldn't have to do that until after the grand final."

what people seem to be having trouble grasping is this:
there is a difference between being arrogant and being excited and hopeful. being arrogant would be saying WHEN the eagles win, the eagles WILL win etc, as opposed to using words such as IF and HOPEFULLY. it would be a sad eagles supporter who wasnt hopeful for them to win the GF. i do not think most eagles supporters believe we have it in the bag. i know i don't.
