*sigh*

As one of my friends said, why couldn't it have been the Royal Derby?

Thanks to the Punters Club for so many fabulous memories.

Yeah. It's a bloody shame about the Punters. That was my favourite place in Melbourne to play at.

I heard it's turning into (another) cafe/bar now......??

What a waste. :(

I've heard two possibilities: a) It's gonna be a Starbucks, b) It's gonna be a ****ry Road shop.

Don't know which is worse, or which is going to contribute more to The Death Of Brunswick Street.

Many happy (bleary) memories of the Punters. Big shame.

What's next? Knock down The Tote and put in a McDonalds?

Why the f*ck would anyone go to Starbucks when you've got Mario's, the Babka Cafe, Newtown SC, Atomica, etc. etc. all along Brunswick Street?

I heard (no joke) it's going to become a strip club!

Either way it's a real shame - let's hope we don't go the way of Sydney and fill every decent pub with pokies.

Sorry. I don't understand what you mean because of the asterisks.

Is it:

Fuucking fuuckers?
Waanking waankers?
Fuucking waankers?
or
Waanking fuuckers?

cheers

(although i guess that if it becomes a strip club, then it will be all of the above)

Yeah, although the espy was in trouble as well for a while there.

Anyone know what's happening with that? Wasn't the Espy going to become a high rise hotel?

Hopefully they've stopped that. Well, if i recall correctly, it did get stopped. (anyone?)

Had many a lost memory there on Melbourne trips........

I think i got pissed at the punters 7-8 times over the final 3 weeks, including the last night. What a shame, I'm worried that Brunswick St will become another Chapel St in 5 years, what a bloody shame that'd be.

F#ck yuppies.

A symptom of the times, my friends. Brunswick St was lost a long time ago. Yuppies, Cafes, Bars-forget live music, let's have some crappy trance rubbish instead-that is the mentality that pervades Brunswick St these days.

This is symptomatic of many inner city areas of Melbourne. Look at St Kilda-a yuppie playground, where once it once a cutting edge area.

The cause-people moving into the area, who do not respect the area and seek to change the area. Residents who move into these areas and complain about loud music etc should have no right to do so. The music was there first.

So the Punters joins the Great Britain Hotel, the Prince of Wales (once the best rock n roll pub in the known universe, now just another sterile dance club), the Seaview Ballroom, the Venue, the Richmond Club Hotel and many more, as a place where you once saw a great band.

...and the Continental Cafe. Yeah, we need more apartments and offices in retail strips....

I believe the Espy has been bought by the old Chevron people! That's why the sign at the bottle shop of the Chevron now says moved to the Espy.

I think they're gonna redevelop the Espy, but not into apartments or offices. They're going to expand upstairs into the old unused bit, and apparently their building a small office area at the rear (the old carpark).

But I may be wrong.

What's going on with the Melbourne pubs? First of all Toohey's came and bought South Melbourne and other suburbs, now some of our best original music pubs are closing. Best I go buy a DAT machine now and chew on a few disco biccies. Long live rock and roll.
