View Full Version : Thornton leaving - Livo to stay?

If Thornton leaves, could this save Luke Livingston's career with another one year deal?
I for one hope it doesn't, as I have a slab on with my uncle that Livo will be delisted, if his not I have to give him a slab.
That could happen actually. It would certainly mean guys like Hartlett and Bower would need to be fast-tracked.
I wonder also if T-Bird did leave, whether the club would place greater emphasis on getting a Hansen or a Gumbleton?

no chance. The fact that Livo hasn't played the second half of the year even though we were desperately short on defenders says something about his future.

What are they doing not resigning Thornton. Could a club do any more stupid things within the space of a year?

Agree. We can't have Livo playing on, we need to get rid of duds, not extend their careers.

Has the club just gone completely mad??!! They've just lost the plot!! They give Kouta another 1 yr $300k deal and they don't even offer Thornton a 3 year $300k deal that he deserves!! He's held our defence up for the last 4 years in a side thats finished on the bottom!! If Thornton walks out on the club and goes to Hawthorn or some other club, we will be so stuffed. We'll have to take Hansen in the draft and probably take Polak in the PSD or through trade week. And this could mean that we would have to fast track the development of Bower, Hartlett and possibly Edwards.
Reading that article just made me sick!!!! It's really gut renching for any Carlton supporter!!!! Com'on Blues, sign Thornton and Fisher and Simpson up!! Number one priority!!!!!

Sheesh. Take a powder and have a lie down will you? There's zero chance of Thornton leaving. Everything you're hearing is just silly-season noise from agents and desperate journalists.
As soon as Thornton is re-signed (and he will be), another agent will pop up with similar demands, and another journo will latch onto it and print another five-hundred word column on woes at club X.
Don't we ever learn here?
There won't be any surprises until trade week. Relax and read a book in the meantime.

Tend to agree with u.
But when there is smoke there is generally fire. Has to be some truth to shopping Thornton around.
But in the end, Carlton would be insane if they moved Thornton

Has simpson been resigned yet???? He is one player we have to keep. If the same thing happens with simpson ill be devestated
Just One thing Salary CAP!!!
Kouta 300K is really 150K in Salary Cap (Veteran)....
Could issues about us offering Thornton the money he demands be related to the Salary Cap and us having to re-sing X amount of players.
Kouta on 150K salary cap is a steal.

The question is why hasn't he re signed. Answer, there is obviously a problem. How big is that problem?

I think it is being kind to livo if we call him the biggest waste of a number 4 draft pick ever. What a dud, if he doesn't go this year I'll be bloody p.o.

The club is waiting until trade week to see what he is worth. They haven'y offerred him a good deal yet because if ho took it, and we were oferred a deal we couldn't refuse we may get stuck with part of his wage.
5 clubs want him (allegedly) which will drive up his market value. If we get an above market trade for him (e.g. Hay for two early picks etc) then they will take the deal.
If they don;t get that offer, he will be offerred what he is worth and he will take it.
Its not hard to understand, don't believe every spin the media puts on a situation.:)

Would you trade him for pick 14 or 15? Hawthorn may get this for trading Everit to Adelaide or Sydney. Pick 14 may give us a good chance of nabbing Collard who I rate very highly.

Done, anywhere in the 1st round would be good. Wish we could hadball the dwaks for pick 6, that would be good.
What about Thornton & one of 17/19/35 for 6 and a fringe player of theirs. That would get us the burger.:)

Sheer lunacy to put it nicely. It's a fallacy on BigFooty that people think lots and 1 good 'item' tagged alot with lots and lots of crap will equivelate to something good.
As I posted on the Hawthorn board, it will fall to,
Spida ----> Adelaide/Sydney
Pick 14/16 ----> Hawthorn
Pick 14/16 ----> Carlton
Thornton ------> Hawthorn

OK understand your point. All parties are playing the game.
Not sure Carlton should be playing this one. I would not categorise Thornton as a problem player like Hay. Clubs will not be willing to give up on a Hay deal. We could also run the risk of losing him in the PSD.
I dont believe media rubbish, I dont believe we should be playing these games with young and promising players.

NO, why trade away a good player in a problem area(backline) for us, for a pick that will get us a player in another problem area, we have pick 17 and 19 to use for players like collard, and if hes gone by then we just pick someone else, if we want to move forward we dont let our good players go.

Everybody does not seem to understand that Brett Thornton is defenently in our top 5 most important players in the team. Without Thornton in our team then who else will take his possition. Who??
Livingston=Dud
Saddington=Injury Prone
O'Hailpin=Unko and doesn't have the body strength and smarts to beat players like hall, brown, loyd.
Our best hope is Whitnall which everyone knows that he is better in the forward line helping fev just like in the wizard cup.
If Thornton leaves Carlton and if Carlton don't win more than 5 games next year than i am goin for West Coast. Im am sick and tired of hearing pagan after every game we lose that possitives came out of the game.:mad:

Thornton ------> HawthornHawks clean up majorly in that deal, effectively trading Everitt for Thornton. A 30+ year old ruckman who has been injured for a young fullback with 10 years ahead of him.
It is a hell of a lot better than the pick 24 or the pick 40 plus Ries being bandied about on the Hawks board however.

Spot on ODN.
There will be plenty of suitors for Thornton if he chooses to leave. I'm sure Essendon, Kangaroos and Brisbane would be interested and they all have picks in the PSD before Hawthorn.
Put a fair and reasonable deal on the table or move along thanks Hawks. Pick 24 and a dud is not going to cut it.

Perhaps. It's been generally widely accepted that Pick 6 is too high a pick to pay for Thornton. That said, it's also known (well at least hoped!), that there is a better chance of picking up a very, very good player with Pick 6 rather than Pick 17/19/35 as was suggested (let alone also throwing in a fringe player)?

Fair enough ODN. Assuming that Pick 6 is off the trading table then, what would Carlton fans widely accept then as a reasonable deal, can I ask?

No need for a sweetener, but something like 14 & 24 is on the right track. It'll be up to the other clubs to top that.
i like brett but i really don't think he is that good.
7th in the best & fairest in a year in which we were pitiful is nothing to write home about.
hopefully the club know what they are doing.

It will be an idiotic move by the board to even consider to trade Thornton, unless something well over his value was offered (pick 6). He is a needed player and without him in the team our structure will be greatly hurt, we will have to keep Whitnall back and play others who are not ready on the opposition's best. We need Thornton as atm he is our best backman and is the best man to get the opposition's best. He did a very good job this season and must be kept unless, as I said earlier, something very tempting was offered.

Yeah this may be the case but you would think after all the adverse publicity of late that the last thing the club would permit is player contractual disputes being played out in the media.
As it sits currently the board look like a total bunch of amatures. I just hope that if there is another ticket being formed out there please hurry up and let us know so we have some hope to hold onto.
PS: Make note that Michael Malouf will be dismissed from his duties next week.

Good god I hope not.
why keep a guy when it is quite obvious that he will never make it in the AFL?
Instead of playing Livo, give opportunities to Hartlett, Edwards, Bower and Setanta. Draft Nathan Brown with pick 19, or if we get a pick in the early 20s or mid teens from the Hawks for Thornton, get Brown.
NO MORE LIVO!!!

Did you not watch our Round 22 match against Sydney? After Hall had got the better of Thornton with a couple of goals and several possessions, Setanta was moved on to him. Hall kicked a goal soon afterwards (Setanta had copped a knock on the shin or calf and Hall took the mark while Setanta was recovering) but for the rest of the match Setanta had the better of Hall and was one of our few good players on the day.
BTW, if you wanted to jump on the Weagles' bandwagon you should have done it before the GF. There is definitely no room now. Anyway, we pushed the reigning premiers to 10 points at Subiaco. That tells you we are heading in the right direction.

if anybottom sides push a premiership Favouite all the way then ya heading the right Direction or any club if ya push em all the way and don;t let them any room to blow ya out of the water lets do one better in 2007 and win some of those close games what we should have won this year a few of those wins could have made a differnce this year least we didn;t finish bottom until rd 22
nearly all year we wern;t rock bottom which is good needed the win instead of the draw would have been good that killed us that draw to Essendon
draw in 2005 & 006 hope no draw in 2007 ;) :thumbsu:
