View Full Version : Trading strategy for draft picks

At the moment we have picks 4 and 22 in the first 2 rounds of this super draft.

With players possibly on the move including Aker, Mal and Moody, there is a chance that we'll gain some early draft picks.

Do you think it'd be better to have another pick at 10-15, or to have 2 more picks in the 20s?

I know it's very unlikely that any club will want to part with their first pick, but if we somehow could snag a couple of 2nd round picks, is it possible to trade a club our 2 2nd rounders for their 1st rounder?

I'm asking this because there may be some good prospects that may get picked up at 10-15, including perhaps Jetta or Proud who may slide.

Or is it better to just have 3 picks in the 20s, so we miss out on the absolute cream of the draft excep #4, but have more dips at this strong draft?

My opinion is to gain more 2nd round picks, given the depth of the draft. Also, it'd be pretty hard to convince anyone to give us their 1st pick.

I have been thinking about this myself and I haven't really been able to convince myself either way. If Brisbane ended up with 3 second round picks I wouldn't be against them trying to trade two of the picks to pick up Proud or Pettard (I am not sold on Jetta) and possibly some of the others. That would still leave Brisbane with a second to use as they desire.

If they kept them however they could use them to shore up their key position depth eg Tippett and Renouf or the Brown twins.

In short at the moment I think I would try to trade up if a player I wanted was there but I wouldn't be overly disappointed if it didn't work out given the depth of the draft.

Unless our other 1st round pick is inside the top 10, we can safely give up the idea of picking up Selwood or Proud, but even then it's no guarantee.

Ahh, so many players to choose from, so few picks to choose them with. :D

My view is that if we need to go backwards to go forward do it... anyone who wants to leave can go as long as we trade em for good picks/young players

Only player that i will not accept us gettin rid of that is currently specualted about is bradshaw.

Its going to hurt for a few years but its better now than prolonging it over 5 years carlton style

im worried that if brisbane get a really good player with a 2nd round pick from say w.a and he turns out to be really good he might wanna go home so thats why i think its better to draft as many qld'ers as possible
