Media speculation today that Bret Thornton was looking at leaving Carlton has been dismissed by the Carlton Football Club as pure speculation.
“The reports in the media today are pure speculation as Bret has certainly indicated to us that he wishes to continue his career with the Carlton Football Club and from the Clubs point of view he is very much a required player. We have been in negotiations with Bret and his management and will continue these discussions when Bret returns from his overseas holiday and are very confident he will remain at Carlton,” said Carlton’s General Manager of Football Operations, Grant Williams.
“We believe all discussions with players regarding their contracts should remain confidential between the club, the player and their manager,” added Grant.
While the Club will not discuss player negotiations with the media there are times when it is important to clarify the circumstances to Carlton members and supporters.

From the Carlton website.
Good news if true. Hopefully as soon as he returns from holidays we can agree to terms on a new contract and sign him up.
Bret IMO is very much a required player and is pivotal to our rise up the ladder in years to come. He is our best defender, and being only 22 with alreasy 91 games of experience, he certainly knows what he is doing. Hopefully in the next few years we can get some help for him. If Bret leaves we are going backwards, would be a really bad situation.
when will people cotton on to the media kicking carlton?
good to see the club make this statement. glad they thought it was important to pass this info to us.

I hope that it is true... I was starting to get worried about Thornton's future at Carlton.
I'm sure we'll all know in 2 weeks time whether he's staying or not. Hopefully he'll stay. :thumbsu:

Hopefully he does stay but I certainly wouldn't be paying him $300K to keep him.

Any contracts not signed now are not signed for a reason. Don't expect much more news until after trade week.

We have about 12 players still unsigned. In fact we've only signed 1 or 2 this year- Kouta & ? Betts. If they remain unsigned we risk losing them in the PSD for nothing like we lost campo last year.

How many players could we possibly lose in the PSD?
After trade week, any of the good players uncontracted will be signed up, unless we are offerred above market prices for them.

Cant trust either. The paper has papers to sell, money to make and such will print any garbage, the website has a club to sell and such will print anything to keep the sponsors/members happy. The only piece of paper I will trust will be a press release entitled 'Thornton a Blue until 200x' or such.

Disgraceful management by Carlton.
Disgraceful tactics by Hawthorn - as if they would actually go through with 300K a year for 3 years.:thumbsd:

As if they actually offered that. Just another example of a player/manager using the media to try and screw every cent out of the club. More and more of them are behaving like leeches and the AFL need to have a good look at how some player/managers operate.

If the avg wage of a player is now 200k, how much do you think Thornton is worth? In my opinion, as far as tall young defenders with potential go, Thornton is right up there. Which 22 year old (or below) defenders are as good as/show as much promise as Thornton?

Well what do you expect from a club with 'Jeffery' as prez ???
He sold his club down the river to play a few games in Tassie a year, and to have the map of tasmania on the front of the hawk jumper.

He is more likely to stay than go. The board have made some gaffs, but how stupid would they look if he leaves now:D
If it goes to trade period and we still haven't signed him, lets see what gets put on the table. Nothing less than a top 10 draft pick would be acceptable, none of these "dud young player plus lower draft pick" offers would do. Ill-informed opposition supporters would disagree but he is worth this much to us.
After that, 250k per year is the most we should pay, or an incentive base which more or less equates to that. 2 years would be better, but if we need to go 3 to secure him and not lose him to the PSD we should. Hawks would be mad to offer $300k over 3 years, but he's less likely to leave for $50k extra a year than say $100k.
I hope at the end of the day we do keep him, but am happy to see what gets put on the table for him in trade week.
Worst case scenario is we lose him for nothing via PSD (although there's a number of clubs with earlier picks than Hawks), but most of the panic and anger at the Board about this issue is completely unnecessary at this early stage.
