I actually have some work to do champ! Wednesdays are normally the quietest. I'll never be afraid to speak my mind. But I'm not someone to have an opinion on everything. No need speaking for the sake of it.

Pickles not have an opinion on everything?! I must have missed the one issue you didn't have an opinion on. Not that I think it's a bad thing Pickles. You have a job to do and have a big input in keeping this forum interesting.

Your link to RDFL @ Bigfooty is shown as http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=272399&page=999 which is this thread.

I cant speak for the kangaroos form on the track , but on this occassion mate i have to disagree, diggers have been going well on the track and im sure they will need to be at the top of there game this week to knock off the Kangaroos in a cracker of a game. Lets not also underestimate the game that will be taking place at 12pm.. 06 grand final replay doesnt come much bigger then that to start 07.

On the 12 o'clock starts, how is the reserves comp looking? Have clubs got the numbers to support 2 teams? I've heard that Macedon may struggle to field 2 sides and not sure about Rockbank either.

Rockbank are travelling along ok, have a few handy pickups which should give them some foundation to build on in the coming years.
I have been watching a lot of what goes on in this thread and see that mainly Diggers and Sunbury is all that is talked about.
Good luck to all teams for the year ahead.

Sunbury and Diggers are talked about because there both two teams that go hard at it every time they play! Plus seem to be the two teams on the rise.....!

By all means we all incourage other teams to talk about their progress!:thumbsu:

BOOM gentlemen where under 24 hours till footy starts and it's a quiet as a funeral home in here!!!!!

Lets start talking some serious business!

Don't forget to put your tips in! Due to not being able to see who tips who, ill get things under way.....

Sunbury to beat Diggers in a tough, physical hit out of old country style football! Sunbury by 2 goals, will come down to last 10 mins final qr!

Lancefield to get its 2007 season under way against Rockbank! I expect a 30 point win, however i think the scoreline maybe might not be as big a difference as expected!

Woodend to demolish Macedon in a white wash! 80+ points, If Sippy plays, dont expect miracles in week 1, with only 2 training sessions under his belt!

Romsey to beat centrals by 4 goals, be good to see how both sides fair, as much has not been talked about over pre-season!

In a game that could go either way, im picking Riddell in a close one! Riddell by a goal!

Diggers to beat Sunbury, but no confidence, agree it will be a close one. I'll say 18 pts

Lancefield to set tongues wagging with a dominant performance, will win by plenty.

Romsey to roll Centrals by 5 or 6 goals

Woodend to be on top of the ladder, possible percentage of 900

Riddell to account for Kilmore in what could be another close one.

My response has nothing to do with me playing for Lancefield.

As a football observer, Rockbank will not win this weekend.

Also to everyone who tips Macedon to get flogged, I think the Cats will be bad this season, but not 150-point bad in Round 1. Woodend-Hesket don't have the firepower to kick 150 points in a game, let alone win by that amount.

Give the Cats some credit.

kilmore lost by 12 points to riddell was a great sign of things to come for the season, dissapointing thing for kilmore was promising young player chris george breaking his jaw n dislocating his shoulder in the 1st half, riddell were just abit to strong for us around the ground, belleville n blade killed us.

matt_nicholls
22 Apr 2007, 12:19
Some good footy played yesterday, I was lucky to spend most my time getting soaked at Kilmore, but saw enough of Romsey and Lancefield to be impressed.

The story of the round was a knee injury to Chris Collins, which could sideline him for a number of weeks, if not the season. Let's hope its just a few games.

It seems that apart from the Woodend-Hesket game, my tips were probably the closest.

Sunbury Kangaroos by 3 points. - they won by 8pts
Riddell by 20 points. - they won by 12 points
Lancefield by 60 points. - they won by 57 points
Romsey by 52 points. - they won by 39 points
Woodend-Hesket by 45 points. - they won by 94 points

Did anyone catch the game at Gilbert Gordon? Were Macedon really bad or the Hawks really impressive? I noticed that Sippy didn't play, which is a good sign for Woodend-Hesket fans.

A Collins knee injury is huge news... I noticed Mick Allen kicked 5 yesterday, Van, did he dominate the game? I wondered how he would impact a game when he didn't have Jamesy next to him, obviously will still have quite an impact.
Anyone have anything on the Romsey V Centrals game??? How did Connellan go in his return game.

Kicked 5.4 i think. Was a little bit too classy for the Blues' defenders in the wet.

Connellan dominated in the ruck for Romsey. But probably didn't give the midfielders a great chance. Will only get better as the communication builds.

Kilmore were very good, but have always been good wet weather players, as seen last year against Romsey. It's a hard measuring stick but they have improved significantly.

One thing I noticed a little bit that I haven't seen before was some "in-fighting" by some Riddell players on the field. Maybe they were rattled a little bit, but I'm sure it will be ironed out this week.

Allen was a class above in the conditions, a goal in the 3rd term where he shook off two tackles, rode a bump and slotted a long bomb was as good as you'll see this year I reckon (especially in the wet).

Good signs for Kilmore in that they never chucked it in, fought the final term out to the end. Id say it was time on in the 2nd (Riddell 2 goals) and a strong 10 minutes either side of 3/4 time that held sway for the visitors.

Some great desperate plays by Kilmore in the dying stages, but twice blokes on a wet day went one handed when the game was there to be won, didnt get the body in line but overall a good first up performance against quality :thumbsu:

My response has nothing to do with me playing for Lancefield.

As a football observer, Rockbank will not win this weekend.

Also to everyone who tips Macedon to get flogged, I think the Cats will be bad this season, but not 150-point bad in Round 1. Woodend-Hesket don't have the firepower to kick 150 points in a game, let alone win by that amount.

Give the Cats some credit.

matt it looks as though mongrel was correct with his tip in this game.
had it been a dry day as expected,150 points would have been definately within our grasp

True, I may have overrated Macedon, who by all reports will not win a game this season, and underrated Woodend-Hesket.

The Hawks have always been good wet weather players, but any of the top six sides (Redbacks, Burras, Roos, Blues, Hawks and Bombers) wouldn't want to take any games for granted because it'll be easy to drop a couple.

What a cracker! … Sunbury Kangaroos v Diggers Rest
Touted as the match of the round, this one didn’t let the fans down.
At Clarke Oval in Sunbury, it was a battle of the titans in tough conditions for football.
Diggers Rest held a handy 11-point lead at half time, but a four goal third term had the game back on the Kangaroos’ terms.
With just seven points separating the two sides going into the last quarter, coaches Jarrod Dixon and Glen Hopkins were desperately looking for match winners in their ranks.
Daniel Bonnici, as he had done in the previous three terms, continued to get under the Diggers Rest radar and combined with the McInerney brothers, Damian Niki and Nathan Hole to secure the Rob Boyd trophy for the Roos.

Player of the round … Michael Allen (Riddell)
With Lee James missing from the Bombers’ line-up in 2007, Riddell needed someone to fill the gaping hole left by the former Bowen medallist.
On Saturday, despite the wet conditions, Mick Allen stood tall inside 50 against Kilmore.
The agile forward booted five goals in trying conditions, but it was his defensive pressure to keep the ball in Riddell’s scoring zone that proved most valuable.

Coach of the round … Mick Giddings (Woodend-Hesket)
Despite losing some key forwards in the off season, Hawks’ coach Mick Giddings has built a good attack around a strong midfield.
Against Macedon, Woodend-Hesket ran in numbers, protected the ball carrier and delivered well to leading forwards.
While the Cats look to have been depleted through departures over summer, Giddings men looked well drilled and will be keen to play against some of the stronger sides in the RDFL.

He's a keeper … Dave Keenan (Romsey)
Recruited from Rupertswood along with his brother Robert, Dave Keenan showed plenty for the Redbacks on Saturday.
He combined well on the half-back line with Paul Brady and Tim Cox to repel just about all of Melton Central’s forward thrusts.
Keenan also showed confidence to drift forward and deliver the ball inside 50, proving a valuable recruit to co-coaches Mark Dipietro and Darren Lingard.

Who'd have thought? … Chris Collins would do his knee
Silence has never been more deafening than the hush heard at Lancefield Park on Saturday.
Shivers went down the spines of every Lancefield supporter as playing coach Chris Collins went down with what possibly could be a season-ending knee injury against Rockbank.
The former Bendigo Bomber appeared to injure a ligament in his knee while chasing the ball late in the game.
Collins’ injury will no doubt keep him on the sidelines for at least a number of weeks, with the full diagnosis not known at this stage.
At worst, he could have ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which would mean season ending surgery.

Keep an eye on … Kilmore
The Blues were very impressive against the reigning premiers on the weekend.
While it is hard to get a benchmark from wet weather football, Kilmore showed the RDFL world that they are ready to make the next step in 2007.
Rarely backing down from a contest, and fighting out for the full duration, it was just one quarter – the third – which cost the Blues the match.
They fielded eight players that had never played at J.J. Clancy Reserve before, and another handful who had returned to the club, so there is still a lot of improvement left in Terry Ahearn’s side.

Matty, just wondering how Mick Giddings gets coach of the round when they beat a side by 90 odd points who possibly will be wooden spooners!

But yet 40km down the round, like you said 'game of the round', and a rematch of last years elim final! Jarrod Dixon was perhaps maybe outcoached last year a little against Diggers! The first win against Diggers in 6 years and some of the moves that were made got us the goal lead going into the last qr, and got us up!I just disagree! Biased or not, my opinion!

Matt instead of making Player of the round and coach of the round assessments on what you have seen why not include the thoughts and observations of others at other grounds before making these decisions. Otherwise keep it going.

Good comment Halffull. However, a wise man like yourself would know that I would have spoken to at least one or two people from each game before making assessments. It's like the pre-season evaluation. The only sides I didn't have knowledge of before round one was Rockbank and Melton Central. I had seen every other side train at least once before hand.

By the way, surely Matt Stacey is going to test his prowess in a better league next year. Don't want him to walk away from the Hawks, but this bloke is going to be a genuine star. Played some school footy with him (he was a year below) and he continues to develop.

The likes of Nq, Sipthorpe,Downing,Lacy, Helmers, Peatling, O'mara, Ahern, Wilton just to name a few, you would think most of these players would be a walk up start for the first round. Work or injured??? Did Jose play with his rolled ankle. I see the team sheet says he did but could some one tell me if he did or not.

Lacy will rarely play this season, if at all.
Ng was in the Carribean and should be back this weekend I think.
Ahearn will play when needed and when fully fit. Has soft tissue injury troubles.
Sipthorp has ankle worries and is expected to line up this round or the next

Tiger tragedy

by Matt Nicholls

SILENCE has never been more deafening than the hush heard at Lancefield Park on Saturday.
Shivers went down the spines of every Lancefield supporter as playing coach Chris Collins went down with what possibly could be a season-ending knee injury against Rockbank.
In the first game of the Riddell District Football League season, it was the last thing the Tigers needed.
Collins’ injury spoiled what had been a great day for the club.
The Under 18s enjoyed a 111-point win over the Rams in the first game of the day, and the seniors deserved an eight-goal victory in tough conditions.

Round 2

Lancefield Vs Kilmore
The Tigers got thier season off to a good start last week with a big win over league whipping boys Rockbank. As usual the Tigers stars were skipper Choate and Shewan. Scott Smithwick will provide a strong presence up forward this year for the Tigers and kicked 4 last week in his first game, losing Chris Collins will hurt the Tiges badly though and they may struggle to find someone to cover that loss.
The Blues showed some good signs in thier first up loss to reigning premier Riddell and will look to show how much they have improved with a strong showing against Lancefield this week, Kemp, Robertson and other new players up forward have boosted the Kilmore stocks and they will be looking to make a statement.

The Tigers were always going to find this tough and with the loss of Collins will find it even tougher. Kilmore to win by 55 points.

Melton Central Vs Rockbank
Centrals showed a bit last week against Romsey but lacked consistency through the game. Recruit Kane Bullen is a fantastic pickup for Centrals and they will look to put in a strong showing this week for their first win.
The Rams started the season ok and have showed that they will improve this year and be more competitive, still keep an eye on Luke Walker as he is a talent and can carry the Rams around the ground. While this game has a history and a rivalry and both sides will lift, Centrals will be much too strong for the Rams and win it by 50pts.

Macedon FC Vs Sunbury Kangaroos
The Cats will be looking to bounce back after a big loss to the rampant Hawks last week, the Cats have a young side and will look to run the ball on the open spaces of the MCG. Azza Christianson had a stellar season last year and will be working hard again, while young guns James "Nipper" Wright, Al Collins and Gus Story will again provide youthful exuberance and dash for the Cats.
The Roos are coming off a tough week one match against Diggers Rest and will need to be on thier toes not to take the foot off the gas after a high last week. New recruits Bonnici and Hole were great last week while Spud James, Stevie Boyd and Jordan Handicott will be looking to have an impact on this game.
Roos to win.

Woodend/Hesket Vs Riddell
IMO just pipped for Match of the Round status. The Hawks had a massive win last week and will be looking to make a statement against the reigning premier this week. The Hawks midfield is looking ominous with Bowen, Salpietro and Sipthorpe (If he plays). Matt Stacey will become one of the better ruckman in the league this year and Ben Shippard is an exciting talent.
The Bombers kick started thier season in style last week with a win over Kilmore at Kilmore. The usual suspects were again dominant for the bombers and Woodend will need to keep an eye on Bellville, Blade, Wadden and Besanko. The returning Michael Allen is a gun and will need to be stopped if the Hawks are to win.
Riddell by 8pts

Diggers Rest Vs Romsey
Match of the round.
Diggers are coming off a hard fought encounter with the Roos in Round 1 and will be looking to bounce back after the narrow loss, the Burra would be expecting the return of number 1 ruckman Jose. Steve Hoare battled hard last week as did Mick Kilty and Jeff Heritage while skipper Sims will be looking to inspire his side. Diggers will look for Cole Laurie to have an impact as in patches against the Roos looked very dangerous.
Romsey showed that they will be a force in 07 with a big win over Centrals. Connellan dominated the ruck and the strong Romsey midfield were able to control the game. Brydon Morgan started the season in style and loves playing against the Burra. Romsey will need to use the ball well and control the tempo to keep the Diggers big 4 away from the ball.
Romsey by 13pts.
