Heavy rains falling over south aust today, expect them to move over melbourne and make for a wet round 2. We all need the rain but couldn't it come anyday other than saturday, Macedons cold enough without it :o

That would have been Daniel "Shooter" Repacholi, who represented Australia at the Commonwealth Games for shooting.

I believe he won gold in the mens 50m pairs.

they would want it to be terrential down pour, kilmore played in the wet last weekend against Riddell and were good enugh to stay with Riddell all day. Would say kilmore should win fairly comfortably

Melton Centrals had a fairly comfortable 28-point win against Rockbank in the seconds. Rockbank kicked consecutive goals in the final term to reduce the margin to sixteen points, and it seemed that with the wind and momentum, Rockbank could cause an upset. But the Centrals proved too good in the end.

Kilmore's premiership odds have come in significantly after a 22-goal win over Lancefield.

The Blues were brilliant, ran the ball sensationally and played out the four-quarters.

More details to follow ...

I dont necessarily want you to jump on the hawks wagon Matt, but could you review your predictions after our win against Riddell and sneak us into the final five. Riddell lucky not to lose by a lot more after Hawks missed quite a few shots on goal. But thet will still be a very good team particularly after Bluey and Peatling return. I know Riddell had a few out but here's a few names for the Hawks who didn't play yesterday Danny Sipthorpe, Ninga, David Patterson, Banga (new recruit-rover very classy) and Jubes (all proven senior players). Not to mention quite a few players in the 2's pushing for a senior game. I agree to talk about premierships be it odds is a little too soon. Any other results on the other games Matt?

From my pre-season predictions, I think I have underrated the Hawks and Kilmore and overrated Diggers Rest, who I think rely too much on Payney and Walker to kick goals. But I had a crack and I admit I was probably wrong with the top-five ... time will tell.

Romsey d Diggers Rest by 7 goals.
Melton Central d Rockbank by 2 goals.
Sunbury Kangaroos d Macedon by 22 goals
Woodend-Hesket d Riddell by 4 goals.
Kilmore d Lancefield by 22 goals.

Romsey with a big win over the Burra, Andrew Page playing some good football for Diggers along with Dan Reilly and Steve Hoare, Romsey are looking the goods at this stage, maybe Mr Nicholls prediction wasn't that far off, with Benjamin John playing good football along with recruit Justin Binney it will be good to have a look at the Redbacks this week.

The Hawks asserted themselves as flag favorites with a strong win over the reigning premiers.. With Brendan Fennell, James Hardwick and Dean Egan up front the Hawks are going to be tough to topple. Riddell had many missing on the weekend and will improve with every game they play, as long as they continue to get improvement from guys like Daniel Burke and Troy Mariner they will continue to be a force this year.

Kilmore had a very impressive win on Saturday against a Lancefield side that was tipped to improve. Kilmore have strengthened thier side with guys such as Glenn Barnes lifting this year along with Kelvin Ford and Cody Franks the Blues are going to be a force in 07, Lancefield struggled on the weekend, but the Tigers will only improve in the coming weeks with young guns like Nathan Milner getting some game time and getting better.

Centrals only just got over the line against the Rams, with the Rams pushing them the whole way. Centrals need more from Matt Jarrett and Nathan Powell if they are to be more competitive this year. The Rams are showing good signs, Neale Oliver looks to be a great recruit and along with Jamie Stafford and other youngsters in the side the Rams have a base to build on.

Macedon, while on the receiving end of a loss this week showed some really good signs on Saturday, the young Cats use the ball pretty well around the ground but are breaking down when they go forward, Coach Christianson will well be impressed with players such as Scott Knight and Scott Phillips. Macedon will improve by seasons end.

That is my wrap up for Round 2.. I'd like to say, thank you very much to my mentor.. You know who you are... :thumbsu: ;)

Heard rumor yesterday that Wallan has folded. Anybody aware of this?

This was talked about last week or 2, if true, Kilmore could be in line to pick up a few more players. Wallan have under 19s and 17s.
Would there be any chance of the under 18 competion making some late changes and including Kilmore if they were able to snag any of the kids? I believe they were only about less than 10 players short of feilding a team this year.
Could be some mixed reactions if this were to happen but overall i think it would be for the good of the RDFL.
This could be kilmores chance.

Woody agree the hawks could have kicked a few more in the last quarter, but I think the hawks would be a liitle more hungry at this early stage of the season, I think with the class Riddell have in there team of which probably didnt have their best day, they'll be right there again, Woodend would expect to make the top5 but there will at least 6 even teams pushing for those 5 spots. I think Diggers will bounce back too they'll have a couple of good wins and get rolling again. Thought last year was even! This one could be even closer!

had heard a couple of the boys say that it was not a great environment down there to be playing footy, as most the boys also had ties with kilmore this may have been a factor in swaying them to come up to JJ Clancy, as kemp played at kilmore a couple of years back and colliss joined last year after playing cricket with kilmore, my belief is that the hutchisons played junior footy at kilmore and i know cornish is best mates with brad colliver

good read on the rdfl website for round 2 pickles, though i must say even as a kilmore player i might have gone for the woodend or romsey coach for the coach of the round considering their results were far more significant, no disrespect to lancefield but looking at the stock of players from last year to this year i think the result was always on the cards...

certainly makes for a ripper at romsey this week with the redbacks and the kangas to battle it out to be on top and unbeaten with woodend after 3 rounds (barring a major upset)

Fair point Duff, but I think Terry deserved his kudos this week. He has his men playing an excellent style of football and I don't know if any side would have beaten Kilmore on the weekend. Believe it or not, but the full squad list indicates that Lancefield is a little bit better than last year. A few key injuries and lacking a bit of confidence is hurting them at the moment. I'm sure the Tigers will be a better side after Round 18 than they were after Round 18 last season.

I played, but very poorly. Took a couple of grabs, one ripper in defence but that's it. Tried hard but was stuck in the forward pocket for a half. Hopefully the Tiger twos can perform a little better against Woodsy this weekend.

As for giving them a wrap, both sides got thumped, so I don't think there would be too many positives to write about.

Have to be realistic Van.. There has been a strong bias in recent articles by Mr Nicholls, it has been pretty obvious.. Romsey, Lancefield and Kilmore have been on the good end of most reports so far.. I realise Matt is with the Kilmore free press, but on here and the RDFL website it isn't a cornered market as such. So hopefully in future articles we will have more of a balance throughout the league and just a touch less favoritism... :thumbsu:

matt_nicholls

I'll take that fellas, I think you're spot on.

However, I will defend myself slightly.

Firstly, it is impossible to see each and every match over weekend. Thus making it hard to comment.

I speak to a number of people from other games and get an idea of what happens. This weekend for example I will be attending the Woodend-Hesket v Lancefield, Romsey v Sunbury Kangaroos, Wallan v Lalor and Kilmore v Melton Central matches.

All four games run at the same time so it's hard to see more than a quarter.

It's natural that I am biased towards Kilmore and Romsey in particular because I know the ins and outs of the club better than others. Therefore I know their potential and their expectations.

As for Lancefield, well I get ridiculed if I talk them up and criticised if I give them a spray .. can't win. However, many expected the Tigers to improve this season before Round 1.

As the season progresses, I will continually get a more detailled and better understanding of the other clubs, with a particular interest in Sunbury Kangaroos and Woodend-Hesket. It will also interesting to see how Diggers Rest respond after a couple of early losses.

While I may be writing a lot about Kilmore, Lancefield and Romsey, the majority of people on this thread want to talk about Diggers and the Roos because that's who they support.

You do a good job in your stories Matt into the clubs up your way, fair enough! But it pisses me off when you do summaries for the whole league after a round and you haven't watched half the games played!

You missed the Sunbury v Diggers in round 1! And in round 2 you should have put more focus into Woodend V Riddell!

I know ya can't be everywhere but consistenly week in, week out from last year, all you did was comment about Kilmore, Romsey and Lancefield!

I know your employeed by the press, but if your do wrap ups for the RDFL the whole year, make sure you look outside the 30km radius to which you work and live please!

Sources say you did take a fair grab in the twos with your eyes wide shut, drifting across the front of a pack of three kilmore blokes! Also heard from a team mate of yours, that mark was all you talked about Saturday afternoon!

Im criticsing you constructively, that you need to look outside your area, in order for people to percieve you as a good Journo!

Eddie McGuire when reporting the district cricket in Essendon 20 odd years ago, did not just do his club but the whole league! He rode his bike to every game accesable on a Saturday's and Sundays in order to be sucessful and for people to take his opinions and stories on board!

So on ya bike son, and get to more games! JK!

You're a fool if you think I can get to any more games than I already do. Cricket goes for half a day, footy goes for three hours. And honestly, what would you prefer:

Half-baked crap about stuff I didn't see; or

Detailed coverage about what I did see.

Don't forget, I use my free-time to write the stuff for the RDFL. It's a non-paid favour to a very good league. My first and foremost priorities lie with The Free Press, which you cannot argue is the best local newspaper covering sport.

As for the mark, the eyes were closed and I think it was the first contested mark I've ever taken! :D

Round 3

Woodend/Hesket Vs Lancefield:
The Hawks have played some good football in the first 2 rounds and have been sure to make a statement early with a win over reigning premier Riddell last week. Coach Giddings has the boys up and running and some good performances early from youngsters Stacey and Shippard would be promising for the Hawks, the key to the Hawks are thier 2nd stringers. Rick Dowling back in the lineup will be dangerous up forward, Shippard will get under the guard of the opposition, if the Hawks keep getting strong performances from Cuinik, Fennell and Forrest as well as Arnold, they will be tough to beat all year.
The Tigers were flogged last week, they have some good young kids down at Tigerland but they are a long way away from being a competitor in this league at the moment, with players to come back into the side they will improve a little but no where near enough.
Woodend by 130

Rockbank Vs Diggers Rest:
This game couldn't come at a better time for a Diggers Rest side a little under siege. Diggers have, probably unfairly, had thier side questioned over the past 2 weeks on whether they have the ability to be atop the ladder again in 07. Whilst they have begun slowly they have also done this over the past 2 years. This game will give them the opportunity to focus on game plans and structure and play some players into form.
The Rams were good last week without getting a win and will be looking to put pressure around the ground on a side out of form. The Rams will need plenty from players such as Jason Welfare and Tom Mainey. The Rams have improved this year but not good enough this year.
Diggers by 130

Kilmore Vs Melton Central:
This game could shape as one of the more interesting games of the round.
Kilmore dismantled an undermanned Lancefield last week and pushed Riddell all the way in Round 1. The blues have better balance this year and they are getting plenty from the guys outside the big names, Adam Goudge has been near best both weeks and the blues expect big things from the George brothers. Terry Ahern has Kilmore well drilled and they will make a run at finals this year.
Centrals had a tough hitout against Rockbank last week and only just got home. But they have quality footballers and if Kilmore take them lightly they will slip under the guard of the Blues.
Kilmore will be too good though and win by 55pts.

Riddell Vs Macedon FC:
While most of the focus for this game will revolve around the under 18 contest this should be an entertaining match.
Riddell would be disappointed with last weeks loss to the Hawks and will be looking to hit back this week. The younger brigade of Riddell players need to take a step up this year to cover the losses left by the players out of the Bomber lineup.
Macedon, while comprehensively beaten last week, actually showed some very good signs, the younger players have very good foot skills and the Cats move the ball very well. The lack of a quality forward hurts them though as they are unable to score when they do go forward, but keep an eye on some of the young guys. Very talented young footballers that the Cats will be keen to hold onto for the future.
Riddell by 80pts.

Romsey Vs Sunbury Kangaroos:
Match of the Round.
Romsey have started the year off strongly despite predictions of a Redback slide in 07. The new recruits at the Redbacks have impressed early and with some of the existing players such as Chris Wilson and Ben John stepping up the Redbacks dispatched of Centrals comfortably and then Diggers with precision. The Redbacks are the side to watch at the moment.
The Roos have also started the season well with a tight win over Diggers and a big win over Macedon. Again, some of the lesser lights have performed very well and will look to continue this week. Daniel Ellery has stepped up another level while James House and newcomers Steve Boyd and Nathan Hole have been instrumental.
Kangas to win.

Don't worry Doon, definitely will not be neglecting either side. Gotta look after the back pocket too!

It's good to see Broadford and Kilmore firing on the track early this season. It's not just about the wins, but they are playing a good brand of football. I know Wallan have had their struggles over the pre-season but hopefully they can bounce back.

Haha, I hope to spend more time in defence, play my best footy there. Nothing worse than being stuck in a forward pocket. The glory of kicking a goal isn't as a good as a goal-saving tackle or big spoil from behind.

I was just checking out the RDFL tipping site on mysportstips, and was wondering how the bonus point works.
It seems Gavin has received a bonus point for tipping 5 correct tips in Round 2, why didnt the all tippers in Round 1 receive a bonus point.

Correct.. Im not sure what happened there.. I have sent an email to work it out, hopeful to get a response. I have removed the bonus point system now and if I dont get an answer or it doesn't reset after this weeks results go in I will pick Rockbank to beat the Kangaroos next week to even it out... Hope this explains it for you.... :thumbsu:

Thats fine I just thought I would point that out, it would only change Gavins lead to one ahead. thanks for looking into that IMS. How will tipping Rockbank make up the extra tip, the game hasnt been played just yet, im a big wrap for the boys at Rockbank this year best of luck to the Roos when this game comes around. My thoughts on giving mr.nicholls a bit of lip are in his defence ..
The guy is only one man and gives fantastic coverage with watever sport it may be. If he ever dropped the lot and just said well, f**kyas all ... who would give ANY coverage on ANY games? For a non-paying job he does well,my opinions are obviously different if the coin was involved ... But it creates good publicity and a certain buzz around the RDFL.

An idea?? Locals of this board to send in their own teams match summarys for matches he doesnt attend ... Would certainly even up the 'favoritism' issue ? Or is it just easier to sit back and hang s*it on the poor bloke.

Thanks for the support Animosity but these guys are entitled to their opinions. If they lived in Kilmore, Broadford, Wallan, Romsey or Lancefield they would love it. It mustn't be easy living in places where the Telegraph and Leader give you bugger all.

haha nice one doon, thing is that no1 wants to play at wallan there has to be someone doing the wrong thing down there either on the coaching staff or on the committee?

Maybe the reason is not what Wallan is doing but rather the amount of currency being offered to the majority of players mentioned. Interesting that the Kilmore president was bemoaning the fact that money was ruining local football in the papers a few weeks ago but seems to have no problems with offering it freely to players. Maybe you should ask some of these what their deals include.

Two Things
there are only 2 players in that list that are getting coin to play at kilmore. Kemp n Cornish
Kemp is a former player at the club and always had the intention of going back to kilmore, Cornish came to kilmore not because he was offered coin but for a change of scenery, then he was offered it.
The other 5 or 6 from wallan, Tomsky, Keenan, Hutchinsons, Colliss are not being paid by the club, i know this for a fact!
Secondly there is only a handful of players at the club that get paid. Former B&F Goudge, along with Duffy, Ryan and players that have been at club for years are not paid. I Would hardly say that Kilmore freely offers money to the players, there is an Incentive system, best on gets 150, 2nd best 100, 3rd best 60 etc etc.

Also on the Matt Nicholls reporting saga, i think he does a good job, would be good for him to review the diggers, subury, woodend, and riddell games more as they are the leading clubs, it would give kilmore a better look at the opposition. Cheers

Hawks eyes, Paul Newton is a senior player!!

Paul is a senior player but hes just turned 18 and to him some things are more important than football in his life! And regarding Jason King, if he was to play in a bath robe he would still have more of the football in one game than you would have all year!

Just out of interest Hawks Eye what club are you from to follow Paul so closely?

Poor Comment :thumbsd: Paul is a super kid and will be playing senior football soon enough. Its all good for someone hiding behind an internet handle to come on here and make comments that will be of detriment to the kid and his senior chances while attempting to have an ill informed stab at someone or thier credentials.

Attempting to compare him to Kingy almost doesn't dignify a response. Both are different styles of footballer.
Maybe you should follow the age old philosophy "Better to not say anything at all and have people think you are a fool, rather than open your mouth and relieve all doubt"...

"coaching credentials will slip" firstly i cant knock the fact that u are obviously linked to the club in some way,and appear to have an interest.
BUT jarrod dixon, along with the selection committee pick the best 22 each week.paul is a great young man and will be a terrific senior footballer in time.but at this stage paul has chosen to commence the season in the 18s.whether he plays seniors will remain up to the coaching staff.
