Woodend-Hesket was simply awesome on the day, I don't think it's fair to call Riddell chokers. They played the Hawks twice in the home and away season for one win and a loss.

absolute pleasure taking pickles' hard earned. i knew the hawks were going to win something this year.
Hate to say i told you so but i have spruiked WH all year to anyone who would listen and what make things even sweeter is the nice little earner coming my way from M Nicholls. It could have been so much worse for him if hawks 2's didnt fall over.

Future29, rumours every year that Robbo is leaving. Don't believe it until you see a clearance is lodged. It may depend on who gets the gig at Kilmore. Also, congrats on winning the WRFL Under 19 best and fairest mate. Can you give me a tingle on 0424 784 130?
FH18, well done on your bets, you nearly doubled your money. Well done to everyone else that had a wager too. It was good fun.
Catters, I must say that although I thought and probably wanted Riddell to win yesterday, seeing Woodend-Hesket win was also pleasing. The Bombers had their run and while were probably the best team overall this season, just didn't have things go their way in the final. If Wadden hadn't of been stupid for three seconds they might have won. But Woodend-Hesket also had injuries, although picking Stacey was going to be a risk.
Read my next post boys, especially all you Woodend-Hesket people, I'm sure you'll love it!

[quote=Harry Wilson;8897344]Fantastic effort by Woodend, they needed to break a 17 game winning streak and they did, I didn't think they could do it but they showed me up, well done!!
Riddell coach at 3/4 time had this to say:
"Good sides win premierships, great sides win back to back and champion sides win three in a row".
I guess they're not the champion side they thought they were.
Tool of the Week goes to Heath Wadden. Before his first indiscretion in the 2nd quarter he was probably leading the way for the BOG medal. Special mention to number 36 for Woodend, to his credit he got under Wadden's skin and pestered him until he snapped. A great job for his team.
Wadden and Leigh coles should hang their heads in shame as Riddell weren't truely beaten until they decided to start throwing punches. After that Riddell were never going to be a chance.
Great job by Sipthorpe, Digger and Cuinik, all had a big impact on the game throughout the day.
Congratulations also go to Sunbury in the 2nds, to be down by 8 goals and to kick the next 10 to win the game was seriously awesome to watch. Hold your heads high boys, you never stopped beliveing you could do it and to the victor go the spoils. Winners are grinners and the losers can please themselves.
Could'nt agree more Harry, spot on summation !
My whole hearted Congratulations go out to the Woodend boys on a great Victory, well done !

OH how I was wrong.
At the start of the season, halfway through the season, and at the end of the season.
Not picking Woodend-Hesket to make the finals, telling The Free Press readers Riddell would win the premiership, and then picking the Bombers to win the flag by 45 points on the eve of the grand final.
Needless to say, I seriously didn’t rate the Hawks well at all.
Am I alone? No.
There are a few reasons why I didn’t think Woodend-Hesket would be a contender this season, and their grand final performance on Sunday certainly made me eat some humble pie.
I didn’t think they could play on large grounds, thought their midfield might lack a bit of pace, and assumed their forward line would be too inconsistent.
Against Riddell in Sunday’s RDFL grand final, they were the complete opposite.
Woodend-Hesket coach Mick Giddings opted for an open style game, told his pacy onballers to run Riddell ragged, and made plenty of room for their enigmatic forwards.
The Hawks were simply brilliant and stuck to their game plan expertly.
After criticism last week, Luke Barker fired back with four goals to lead Woodend-Hesket to victory.
Veteran midfielder Nick Hannett showed his experience in big games with a best-on-ground performance, his ball use at the stoppages was second to none.
For all Riddell’s brilliance in the home and away season, players failed to fire on Sunday.
Having played just one game in the last 22 days, the Bombers were extremely rusty.
While they kicked the first three goals, there were a number of crucial skill errors throughout the contest that were simply unlike the Riddell we have come to know.
But to Woodend-Hesket’s credit, they were sensational all game.
Bombers coach Darrin Rowsell probably summed it up best at three-quarter-time when he told his players that “good sides win premierships, great sides go back-to-back, but champion sides win three in a row”.
While certainly a great side, Riddell was probably not a champion team this season.
They lacked a tall marking forward option, a flaw which Woodend-Hesket was able to expose.
Is this the end of an era for Riddell? It certainly has the potential to be.
But write them off I shall not, as Woodend-Hesket has proved this year that it is easy to get both long and short term predictions wrong.
I’m happy to have made the mistake -- it goes to show the evenness of the Riddell District Football League and the terrific season ahead of us in 2008.

bit disappointing they didnt wait around to watch woodend get their medals...i know it must be tough as hell, but its pretty much the custom for the losing side to pay their respect for that 10 mins or so...

Commiserations go to the Romsey 18's and B grade netballers. Both had a big job ahead of them and gave a good account of themselves.
Well said Harry
I really feel sorry for the Riddell players who gave 100%.
Heath Wadden cost Riddell the game, to be sent off in a grand final is inexcusable and to do it in such a cowardly manner (round arming someone from behind when they have their head over the ball). It was definitely noticeable in the third quarter when Riddell went back to having 18 on the ground, they started to score quickly…. they just ran out of time with the wind.
Wadden’s stint on the pine didn’t help him, when he came back onto the ground after being sent off in the second he did exactly the same thing in the last quarter (it was the same spot on the ground too) – this time he connected properly and no 21 of Woodend was out cold before he hit the ground (another Riddell player who will remain unnamed until they investigate, kicked no 21 for Woodend in the head whilst he lay unconscious on the ground, I hope the video footage got a clear view), no 21 left the ground in an Ambulance.
Harry, the one thing the Riddell coach missed in his speech about Champion sides is that champion sides, in fact any side worth watching are gracious in defeat, Riddell left for the club rooms before the presentations had even started…….
I was very impressed with Sunbury’s win in the 2’s, to come from behind like they did was very courageous… they should be a very strong side next year if that’s an indication of the clubs moral fibre.
To the victors go the spoils… well done Woodend and Sunbury

Thanks to the posters that have given the Woodend-Hesket players and coach the recoginition they deserve. I'd like to say that we as a Woodend club appreciated the kind words from the Riddell players and supporters (OMNI), particularly Scooter who was gracious in defeat by speaking highly of the way our side performed and at the same time expressing disappointment in what occurred late in the game. Although it was disappointing that Riddell did not stay for the presentation this should not be seen as being indicative of the entire team. It was great to see one of the most popular and respected players in the RDFL, Bomber Besanko in the Hawk rooms expressing his congratulations afterwards.
If it is true that a Riddell player kicked Jimmy Hardwick whilst unconscious then I agree that further action should be taken.
Well done to the Woodend-Hesket club on winning both the U18 and senior premierships in 2007!

Hawks fly high!
FASTER running, better skilled and more determined were all the attributes of a well-oiled Woodend-Hesket outfit on Sunday, as the Hawks steamrolled Riddell to take out the Riddell District Football League premiership
In front of a packed audience at Lancefield Park, Woodend-Hesket were simply too good on the day for the Bombers, winning by a comfortable 24 points.
Most expected the match to be close, but Riddell were certainly hot favourites to win. Kicking the first three goals of the match, all off Heath Wadden’s boot, the Bombers were off to a perfect start.
Woodend-Hesket’s nerves finally settled when full-forward Luke Barker read the ball expertly to mark and goal and open the Hawks’ account.
Riddell responded, but missed opportunities to really inflict damage to their rivals.
Finishing strongly, Darko Dabrovsak and Barker both snared majors before quarter time to trail by just three points at the first break.
A clever Daniel Salpietro snap saw the Hawks hit the lead early in the second term, before skipper Adam Johnstone delivered the ball brilliantly to Dale Ciunik, who converted.
Whoever was supposed to be playing on Johnstone should be extremely disappointed with their efforts, as the fleet-footed captain ran riot between the flanks.
The Bombers fought back through two Michael Allen goals, although their lead was only momentary as Barker kicked his third to give Woodend-Hesket the ascendancy.
With moments to play, Pete Manser extended the Hawks’ lead to 10 points, a due reward for his first half efforts.
Needing a hero, last year’s best on ground performer Dean Besanko proved his desire to win a second Doug McIntyre Medal by kicking the first two goals of the second half, giving the Bombers back the lead.
A fine Ciunik pass to Salpietro saw the Hawks respond, before an arm wrestle began to develop.
For ten minutes, no side could buy a goal.
Eventually Riddell forward Leigh Harrison shook off Warren Else to score a goal, giving his side a three-point lead.
The Hawks responded quickly, but missed a crucial goal in the dying minutes of the term.
A superb set play from the Bombers saw the ball go from end to end quickly to finish in youngster James Petran’s hands, who made no mistake to give Riddell a vital eight-point lead at the final break.
While Woodend-Hesket was trailing, they had the advantage of a four goal wind in the last quarter.
An inspirational speech from both coaches had their troops firing early, but once again Johnstone found space and kicked a telling captain’s goal to suggest that Riddell’s run of premierships was about to end.
There was no stopping the Woodend-Hesket bandwagon. A two-point deficit was soon a 24-point lead as Daniel Sipthorp, Salpietro, Barker and Podbury iced what was the premiership cake.
UGLY INCIDENT
In what was otherwise an enjoyable contest, there were two incidents that reflected poorly on the match, as well as the RDFL.
The second, and most serious clash, occurred on the boundary near Riddell’s half-forward line late in the game.
Woodend-Hesket had all but secured the game, when Heath Wadden collected Hawk defender James Hardwick.
It was a definite free kick and a probable report/suspension.
Hardwick was taken to hospital by ambulance, and in a terrific gesture, his teammates gave him the premiership cup as a “travel buddy”.
The first incident also involved Wadden. The small forward was reported and sent from the ground in the second quarter after striking a Woodend-Hesket opponent.
After Hardwick was stretchered from the ground, play resumed briefly before the final siren sounded to an eruption from Hawk fans.
It was Woodend-Hesket’s first premiership since 2002, and the Hawks celebrated long into the night and well into Monday.
Veteran onballer Nick Hannett was best on ground for the premiers, taking home the Doug McIntyre Medal.
He was a worthy winner and had plenty of support from his teammates, notably Pete Manser (player of the finals series in my opinion), Adam Johnstone, Luke Barker, Daniel Salpietro and Guy Donovan.
For Riddell, Aaron Blade, Jason Allen, Justin Belleville and James Climas were best.
SENIORS
Woodend-Hesket 3.1, 7.5, 8.9, 13.12 (90) d
Riddell 3.4, 5.7, 9.11, 9.12 (66).
Goals (W): L. Barker 4; D. Salpietro 2; P. Podbury, A. Johnstone, P. Manser, D. Dabrovsak, D. Sipthorp, D. Ciunik, G. Donovan.
Best: N. Hannett, Manser, K. Ng, Donovan, Johnstone, Barker.
Goals (R): H. Wadden 3; M. Allen, D. Besanko 2; L. Harrison, J. Petran.
Best: J. Allen, J. Climas, L. Coles, J. Belleville, M. Shaughnessy, M. McDougall.

I know we can all throw up if's buts and maybe's, but I just can't help but think that had Romsey beaten Woodend in the second semi final, and let's face it, we should have beaten them, the cup would have been ours. Let's take nothing away from Woodend though, they had to do it the hard way and what a great job they did. Had Romsey have beaten Woodend that day, we, I have no doubt, would have beaten the Roos the following week, but I think Riddell would've beaten us in the GF. Was this one that got away from a couple of sides..... Romsey, Sunbury and Diggers? All had the potential to take it, but the two best sides were there on the day and the best side on the day took home the silverware.
I guess the point I'm tyring to make here, is how even the league was this year. Games could always go either way, even though a few games in the home and away season were blow outs the competition was genuinely close.
Any reports on how young Hardwick is from Woodend? Hope is feelling better today. I rekon he would have had a head ache prior to starting the celebrations, then to get on the gas with the team mates would be a huge effort. Great job.

Jimmy's fine Harry-thanks for your concern. Was out and about having a crack last night. He obviously missed the night of the Granny which was a bit of a shame-but i dont think he'll have too many regrets, and if he does he's got a constant reminder hanging around his neck that things aren’t that bad. So far in the celebrations stakes Guy Donavan (Banga) BOG by a mile-wont publish any of his antics here, but it has been all class, Johnno wasn’t too far behind last night, but slipped up making a crucial error by inviting all the boys back to his place to continue the festivities. Anyone who has been involved in a flag would agree it’s a mistake you only make once, if at all!
I agree Harry, a number of teams had their chances throughout the year and yes your boys were terrific at Kilmore. In the end maybe, just maybe it was that last quarter that gave our blokes the shake up we needed and perhaps was one reason for where we ended up (always hard to know).
It's an exciting prospect for the league over the next few years, if the top teams maintain their form and teams like Lancefield and Kilmore push towards the top five which looks likely at the moment.

Omnipotent - om·nip·o·tent om-nip-uh-tuhhttp://cache.lexico.com/dictionary/graphics/luna/thinsp.pngnt]
–adjective
1.almighty or infinite in power, as God.
2.having very great or unlimited authority or power.
Obviously you have great knowledge and power, given your handle.
I, therefore, find it difficult to comprehend, that one with such infinite power, would not have known or either bothered to check the reason behind the Riddell Officials decided to move the players off the ground before agreeing with comments of other particpants not connected to the Club.
It was not meant as any disrespect to the Woodend team or Club. They are to be congratulated for their success. They played the better football and had the greater desire on the day.
The Riddell players were seated on the ground waiting for the presentation when a potentially volatile incident occured between supporters next to where they were seated.
Given the incidents that occured during the game and the abuse that was also being directed at the players from individuals walking past the huddle. The decsion was made to move the players into the rooms to avoid any further unsightly incidents.
Nothing more.
I have been reading the RDFL thread all year and I have enjoyed and sometimes been bemused by the comments of the participants.
However, I think it proper to check information is correct, before automatically assuming the worse.

That is a load of rubbish Fenner!! I was not far from the incident and no one kicked Jimmy while he was on the ground. As soon as he hit the ground he was out and no one went near or touched him whilst he lay there!! :thumbsd::thumbsd:
And i have no doubt that footage would show this!!
The incident happened and a few scuffles commenced but to say that someone kicked him while he lay on the ground is complete crap!!
Save these comments for another thread!!

We'll what a big few days it has been! After a big week last week on the terps, and a massive afternoon session Sunday and Monday, one thing i noticed from talking to players form different clubs, was the about how good this year was.
Spoke with almost a player from every club including players from outside RDFL clubs that came to watch and almost everyone commented on the increase of pace, skill level and talent the RDFL had seen in 2007! Which led me to "08".
All year we have talked about and associated old RDFL clubs returning, and the conclusion, was not for a couple years!
Well it looks to be that players playing in these comps, including near and far, where more than happy with the style, intensity and pace of the game, and could look to return or start! "If the clubs aren't coming back the players sure are............"
I look at how big the signing of "sippy" and "Bonicci" has been this year, and it's shown the RDFL can draw crowds, talent and sponsors! I attended the Ballarat grand final, and where not far off as far as corporate doings but crowd wise, was much of a muchness....
So my view on 2007 was a big :thumbsu:............
Look forward to next year and what lies ahead........

Spot on trueblue. The RDFL is definitely on the way up. The standard of football continues to improve, the financial positions of most clubs now appear stable (not so just 5 years ago) & the relationships between players, clubs & the league hierarchy is also at an all time high. IMO it would be ludicrous to even consider reinventing our league as a 2 division league again where the rich clubs dominate whilst the poorer & smaller clubs struggle to field sides and attract vsponsors etc.

If this was the reason for the Riddell players not sitting out on the ground then it's good enough for me. Scooter and Andy Power have enough integrity in my eyes to believe such a version. Again there were many players and the coach who sought out our players to congratulate them, which was great to see. Although there seemed to be a bit of tension after the game from supporters it was great that no one acted inappropriately.
As mentioned by Trueblue and FH 18 the league has had a great year and should only get better!
Matt how did you end up in the betting stakes? You did mention you were going to give it away next year, but I’m sure most would agree that it added a little more interest to the league and certainly another talking point at the end of each week. Hope you stick to your guns and keep giving us odds next year. It’s certainly hasn't hurt the Woodend economy! Hey did you realise you were talking to FH18 for a good ten minutes on the weekend-For what its worth he thought you were a terrific bloke:D.

I ended up well in front over the course of the season, but it is illegal and there is a good saying about quitting while ahead. FH18 has good taste, he isn't a bad bloke himself either. Once again, well done to the Hawkas and it was good to get the Mark Williams-Alan Scott "you were wrong".
Now back in the land of the living .Congrats to Woodend .Simply wanted it more and played alot better team football.Well coached Mick.As 4 walking of ground early we had no choice,2 males on more than beer made it clear what they wanted to do .Would have loved to stay out as it is a great learning experience4 our young side.Chris if you would have came into the rooms at sometime after the game,as you have most of the year you would have realized this.Good luck to Woody up north .Once again we were outplayed on the day well done. The Hunted have now become the HUNTERS.

Fair enough Scoot but would love some questions answered if you could. Will Wadden be welcomed back to Riddell FC after the off season? What did the club hierarchy think of the incident? Will D rowsell be senior coach at RiddellFC again next year?
I think it was probably fortunate that the incident happened against Woodend. Ive seen enough to suggest that not all clubs supporters would have taken to a player being king hit that lightly.
Woody will no doubt be sorely missed at Hawks in coming years but i have heard a whisper that Rodriguez might step into the void. Another great clubman with a great knowledge of the modern game. Any truth Rodriguez or is too soon to say?

So can you give us some opening quotes for next years Premiers. Maybe i should take over your SP license. Try these for size:
Woodend-Hesket $2.50
Riddell / Kangaroos $3.00
Diggers $5.00
Romsey / Kilmore $7.00
Lancefield $12
Melton Centrals $20
Macedon / Rockbank $50
Possible big-name recruits over summer:
Woodend-Hesket (Mick Lacey)
Riddell (Mark Power)
Kangaroos (Heath Wadden)
Diggers (??? Key Forward)
Romsey (Al Meldrum)
Kilmore (Rob Wittmer)
Lancefield (Steven Reaper)
Centrals (??? Hard-nosed Captain/Coach)
Macedon (Anthony Belcher)
Rockbank (??? Gun midfielder)
Some of the above are apparently on the cards whilst others are just wild stabs in the dark. Feel free to tell me if i'm close or way off the mark.

Al's been reappointed as Heathcote coach. Hopefully Greenshields can get on the park for Centrals next year, will be like putting Sipthorp into the side for them. I doubt Reaps will be at Lancefield, even though his brother is assistant coach. Works for the VCFL and if he plays he'll be encouraged to play in one of their leagues. Doubt Lace will comeback to the Hawks, although you'll have better info than I :p. Wittmer is probably 85% certain to return to Kilmore, and I have about five other names up my sleeve for the Blues too, but can't divulge just yet. I'm recruiting for three clubs.

Lacey a 75% chance to return to hawks and my sources say Reaps about same % to play at lancefield. Wont be available every week but will play about 10 games.
Would also be interested to hear whats happening at the cattery. Have they got soembody in mind for 08? What are there plans re recruiting? Surely if they can hang onto some of the quality kids they have had come thru recently and add a couple of older experienced players they will soon become competitive.

What a GRAND FINAL!!!!! only just regaining the use of my voice, exactly the fashion woodend wanted to win it i beleive, had to fight right until the end.
After watching the quality of the woodend u/18's, and there reserves almost being untouchable all season one can only beleive that if woodend can hold there squad together they will be in for an equally successfull season..
Anyone here in close contact with woodend predict which players will take the next step and have a massive impact on the season? from watching the 18's im gonna have to go with Jimmy Chettle, big burly kid

I think you answered your own question WW. With Woodends list very deep allready I can't see many of the kids taking to many senior spots.
Making them prime targets in 2009 for other clubs.
Chettle coming from Gissy this year may go back, Shippard, Sheppard and Kopke would be the likely group to play some senior games next year to have (massive impact) will be hard for any kid coming up.

Stongly agree, Jarryd Dixon has proved that he is the man for the job. He has gotten more out of the players at his disposal than anyone would have thought he could. They made a prelim, remember, that's only one good game away from fighting it out for the Flag. Seems a strange decision to screen applicants, but then again, perhaps they set a protocol over the last couple of years that every position gets looked at to ensure everyone is on the same page and position holders are accountable and responsible for their results. I couldn't see them going past Jarryd next year, although stranger things have happened, for example, Romsey won the flag in 03 and had a new coach the next year.

What a Year!!!!!!!
The Kangaroos have this year took enormous steps to establish ourselves as a consistant force for many years to come.
The girls have done a great job to get both sides in the finals and with a little improvement they will surely be big threats for the coming year.
The boys have created history for our club with all sides making the finals, the 18's showing that the club is heading in the right direction and all boys have improved under the coaching of Gavin and will enhance our senior stocks in the years to come.
What more can you say about the two's,they are surely what our club is all about and at no stage did they toss in the towell and their effort to come home with a burst was magnificent to see!!!!!!!!
The Seniors have shown now that step by step we are getting closer to the big one and the improvement shown this year, says good things for the Club and competition overall.
On and off the field we have had tremendous support from all concerned and with our current sponsors and future ones who have made committments,it is all good for the Club.
In reference to comments regarding Coaches and their future positions, nothing will be decided till we have our committee meeting next week and we dont need people telling us how good certain coaches went this year as proof is in the pudding and when the time arises. i am sure we will certainly make the right decision.
Congradulations to Woodend (18's and Seniors) and it was a pleasure dealing with all Clubs both on and off the field.
Our competition is flourishing and all is good for many years to come and the executive of the RDFL are heading us all in the right direction.
Go The Roos !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has been spoken about around the town for the last five weeks or so and although I'm sure Terry has plans of taking players with him, at the most he will get is two or three (and that will include his brother Corey Mills). Cohuna is simply too far for blokes from Kilmore to be travelling.

Close, if it had of been for more of the season then yes, just think it was only after he was switched to the midfield near the end of the year that he really stepped up to the levels he reached.

Congrats' on your clubs big win on Sunday too mate, really thought we were over the line.
What did you think of No 17 Ben Sonogans game for Riddell ?
Stood tall in our forward line & takes a lovely grab, kid may have a big future ahead of him & could be the answer to our deep forward needs ?

Probably right, Bangar could have gotten a look in, but it was between him and Jeff Heritage, think Heritage has just got that touch of polish that sets him apart from Bangar.

Looks a very likely type OMNI, Benny should be able to step up into the seniors next year.. Dont know if he could be Key Possie in the ones though, would need to have an impact similar to Petran, dont know if he is capable of that... :thumbsu:

I was very surprised he didn't get into the best 6, i thought he was very good. In the first quarter i thought that he would hurt us all day. just kept running all over the place, he will keep the back man on thier toes in the next few years.

Was in my best 6 ! just like the way the kid moves.
What about the crowd up there I am told there could have been as many as 5000 people at any given time.
The RDFL is really on the move ! Scotty McCartney, Alan Mathews & the boys down at the Big House are really to be congratulated on a fantastic job this season.
What with Melbourne's urban sprawl coming ever closer to us the RDFL is perfectly placed to become the next Essendon District Football League.
Some great times ahead me thinks.

Does anybody have any tribunal results from Grand Final Day?
Did Wadden retire this year?
With a few weeks already up his sleeve, will he go close to the 16 week rule.

I'm told that he accepted a one-week suspension for his second quarter hit, and that he wasn't reported late in the last quarter. Haven't spoken to the umps but I believe they were not 100% certain on who hit who. (I was at the other end so couldn't tell). Last time I heard there was an investigation into the incident, with results unknown to me at this stage.

28. Luke Walker (Rockbank) – NEW.
29. Tristan Salter (Kilmore) – NEW.
30. Aaron Christiansen (Macedon) – NEW.
WHO’S NEW
Players who set the RDFL alight
Daniel Bonnici – Averaged around 30 disposals a match and was the Kangaroos’ key ingredient in the midfield. Won the Bowen Medal.
Dave Cornish – Won the RDFL goalkicking and had the most shots of anyone this season. For a small forward has great hands and leads to the right places.
Steve James – Sunbury Kangaroos were successful because of James’ presence in the ruck and his ability to float between the flanks.
Aaron Blade – Combined with Justin Belleville brilliantly to lead Riddell’s midfield this season. Often floated forward to setup or kick goals.
Guy Donovan – Prolific ball winner who knows who to both shake a tag and apply one. The Hawks’ coaching panel rate him highly and will probably win their best and fairest.
Brian Wheelahan – The key performer every week for Melton Central in the midfield and up forward. Needed more support.
Daniel Salpietro – Led Woodend-Hesket’s goalkicking and has plenty of polish. Stood up when it mattered in the finals series.
Phil Conway – Won Lancefield’s best and fairest after dominating the ruck this season, probably should have made the RDFL team of the year.
Matt Stacey – Will be leading Woodend-Hesket’s best and fairest halfway through the season. Dominated in the ruck before injuries slowed him down.
Luke Walker – Continued to give the opposition headaches at both ends of the ground, despite playing in the poorly performed Rockbank side.
Tristan Salter – Was named at centre half back in the RDFL team of the year but was his best up forward. A vital utility for the Blues.
Aaron Christiansen – Backed up a stellar 2006 season with great leadership down at the Cattery. Is a vital cog in Macedon’s bright future.
Rick Dowling - Led Woodend-Hesket's goalkicking in the home and away season and was a bright spark up forward. Strangely overlooked for the Hawks' finals campaign because of a two-week form slump.
WHO’S MISSING
Exclusions from the pre-season Top 30
Cole Laurie (Diggers Rest) – Broke his foot early on and missed too many games.
Garth Ploog (Sunbury Kangaroos) – Was reasonably good in a well-performed side, but should have done more as a CHF in a side with such a strong midfield.
Luke Edwards (Romsey) – Groin injury restricted him to a handful of games.
Chris Payne (Diggers Rest) – Drifted between seniors and reserves after losing his form.
Leigh Coles (Riddell) – Was instrumental for the Bombers, but a few went ahead of the tough onballer.
Matt Senyschyn (Kilmore) – Missed all but two games due to a shoulder injury.
Warren Else (Woodend-Hesket) – Was solid all season but wasn’t outstanding as in yesteryears.
Bobby Johnson (Sunbury Kangaroos) – Lacked his usual run and carry from half-back, was still a key ingredient in the Roos defence though.
Chris Kakoschke (Lancefield) – Didn’t live up to his pre-season expectations, and was a victim of a poor functioning Tiger midfield.
Dean Helmers (Sunbury Kangaroos) – Was used as an impact player off the bench. Played well in patches.
Sam Bowen (Woodend-Hesket) – Was a solid half forward, but lacked consistency over the season.
Steve Ruane (Diggers Rest) – After a quiet start to the season the reigning Bowen medallist regained some form but never got back to his best of 2006.
Kar Weng Ng (Woodend-Hesket) - Was again solid in defence, but lacked his usual run and carry game that did so much damage in 2006. Will bounce back next season.

If that is the case the umpires have failed in their duty of care for the Woodend player. Everybody saw the hit and given the fact that two of the field umpires and the boundary umpire were anywhere from 5-20 metres away and goal umpire 30 metres away (which is where I was standing and I saw it) there should have been a report laid. Very dissappointing:thumbsd::thumbsd:

Great effort IMS but you undid all your good work by not slotting Guy Donovan in. Yes the coaching staff do rate him at Woodend, but that's only because he rarely gets beaten in his position. In most games this year and nearly all the important ones he had the most clearances of any of our players and the inside 50's. I'd love to see (if each club took stats) how many players sit higher than him on those two stats, which are surely two of the most important stats for onballers in our league. I agree that Bang will most likely take out the B&F and although as bias as i am, most who watched him play this year friend or foe would have him firmly in the top ten ahead of fellow onballers Mark Mc, Robbo and Sims (all terrific players). Unfortunately we still rate guys too highly on their style of play(how long they carry the ball for or the flashy type of play) rather than attributes that we should be rating our onballers on i.e hardness at ball, performance at a stoppage and here's one that doesn't register for many of the onballers in our league-ACCOUNTABILITY!-Banga ticks the box for all three! The biggest joke during our G.F celebrations (and for the year) was Guy who? It looks as if the joke may have to continue into next year!

Great effort IMS but you undid all your good work by not slotting Guy Donovan in. Before I start, I’d like to declare that I’m not related to him in any shape or form but believe that my sentiments will be shared by most who watch Banga play week in week out. Yes the coaching staff do rate him at Woodend, but that's only because he went head to head on some of the best (well known to umpires) players in the league and did his job (either broke even or comprehensively beat them)-not as a tagger but head to head including your own Bonnici (Bonnici won first half, Guy won second) at our ground, McLellan at Romsey to name a couple. In most games this year and nearly all the important ones he had the most clearances of any of our players and the inside 50's. I had him as Woodend-Hesket's third best player, behind Sippy and Johnno.
In effect at 17 I had him as the ninth best onballer this season behind Bonnici, Robbo, Belleville, Mark McInerney, Johnno, Sims, Choate and Blade.

Great to see Matt. However even you'd have to agree you jumped on him late in the season-wasn't much talk about him until much later in the season. In my humble opinion you've got your ranking of onballers completely wrong. Coles is the other onballer i rate highly and could jump ahead of a few the names mentioned above. Blade plays as much forward and wing as onball these days-never seen Sims or Robbo play a belter against us so dont have them up too high. Choate is a gun (only put that in because i know he reads this and loves seeing his name in the spotlight-Where were you Brownlow night mate?).
Nick hannett is also one of the class onballers in the league (not just because he won the medal), but was definitely the most important onballer during our whole finals campaign. Missed a good chunk of our season due to his O.S trip, so hard to rate his season-but has done more than most if not all those onballers-was top three in his B&F at Melton South something like five times. Out of the boys you mentioned this would be my order of whom i would pick as my onballers in the backyard (i'll keep the Woodend boys out at the risk of being called bias):
Bellville, Bonnici, Choate, Coles (throw him in-has been more important to Riddell than most would give credit for-Taken over Blueys role this year), Wheelahan, Matt Mc, Leigh Mc(bit like Coles very important to his team),Sims, Mark Mc, Robbo(know he's your love child Matt, but not mine-never plays on anyone-too many p's in the back half-can see why umpires love him),Aaron Christiansin (very good player like to see him a good side).

I agree in principal with you Woody, but I'm lucky to be one of few on this thread that gets to see games featuring multiple combinations. Although I see more Kilmore games than any other, I also see a fair bit of Riddell, Romsey and Lancefield. I think it is fair to say that some players like Robbo play well against some sides and not great against others. Some teams have good match ups for him. I don't care where anyone gets their touches, as long as they use them well, which Robbo does. It's not his fault opposition sides let him loose all the time. In four Diggers Rest games I saw this year Sims was simply awesome. Cops at least one tagger per game, is the barometer of his side and always performs. Mark McInerney was almost as good as Bonnici this season, didn't have the high possie counts though. I'm one of Colesy's biggest fans and love the way he plays, but he just got squeezed out. I agree that Hannett was a great contributor in the games he played but didn't play enough to get in. Fellow onballers probably have a better idea on who is better, but from an outsiders point of view I thought I had it pretty much spot on. Banger was probably a victim of not being an attacking midfielder, which can work against your judgement if you're only a spectator. That argument can be used with Blade, who is a fleet-footed outside player who runs the lines.

Pickles you are spot on the attacking or even ball carrying HBF's on-ballers get all the recognition, which is par for the course a little. Clearly woodend are pretty happy with Nick and Banga in close, but there must be other ball-winners who don't get the recognition they probably deserve, he didnt play this year but Bluey Andrews was great at freeing up the riddell runners. Gouge has always does a good job at Kilmore as has Shewan at Lancefield and Dip was good at giving it too McCellan and Morgan to run and carry.. Two of those blokes dont play anymore.
Any others I missed out on? Woody mentioned Leigh Mc who can get it himself or find it in space as I think most of the Sunbury boys can, pretty handy players to have in the team.

The in and under players certainly are just as valuable as the ball carriers, its just from the boundary its not as easy to recognise who those players are. That's why I can overlook players at times.
An interesting point of note that Diggers Rest, Romsey and Lancefield's rucks won their respective best and fairest awards, and Steve James is one of the faves for the Sunbury Kangaroos award. Matt Stacey would have won Woodend-Hesket's if not for injury IMO. Glad to see the club officials doing the votes have not gone the way of the AFL umps and still recognise that a good ruckman is still the most influential player in Australian Rules football.
Great News
It is with great pleasure that we announce that Jarrod Dixon has been appointed coach of the Roos for the coming 2008 and 2009 seasons.
Contrary to all discussions prior to our meeting last night,we are very excited where Jarrod and our club are heading in the years to come.
Great kids coming through our junior ranks and our player stocks are very good at the moment.
Our clubs both Juniors and Seniors (boys and girls)having every side in the finals and winning 4 flags, says it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bounding ahead
Go the Roos
