Brothers share finals glory
Andrew Hamilton
LOOK around any change-rooms after a grand final and you'll see a wildly varying array of emotions – pride and pain, elation and envy.
Lion Troy Selwood has experienced them all, bar one.
In 2003, he was a first-year player who watched his famous teammates claim an historic third straight premiership.
The following year, he shared their pain while at the same time wondering when he would get his chance.
In 2005, his twin brother, Adam, was part of the West Coast side whose premiership dream was shattered by a Leo Barry mark in the dying minutes.
On Saturday, the roles were reversed and Troy was able to hug his champagne-soaked brother in a room deep beneath the MCG. After four years as a spectator, he is desperate for his chance.
"I am, I'm absolutely chomping at the bit," he said.
"I've been to the last four grand finals with pretty strong alliances, be it my teammates or my brother. I'm dying to finally be on the big stage."
But that did not mean any jealousy clouded his elation on Saturday.
"I was absolutely stoked, just like any other brother," he said.
"You put your footy alliances aside for this day and hoped that he does well and his team gets up, just like any family member would."
What it did do was remove a little of the doubt about his own ability and erase any trepidation most Lions would be feeling about the pain they're about to face on October 16, when pre-season starts, and replace it with a determination to do the hard yards.
"There's a little bit of a dangled carrot there," he said.
"He's a guy that has similar ability to me and now I believe I'm good enough to do it.
"I guess when I was at the Lions and was a first and second-year guy, I had doubts that I could do it but I now realise it is definitely possible for me and it will be a big motivation over summer."
Younger brother Luke, a high-draft candidate this season, has it all before him.
Luke is tipped to go top 10, which means he could end up at Brisbane, although Troy joked it would not surprise him to have the third brother in a third state.
"It's probably the way it will work – the draft has been pretty cruel to us," he said
