Laycock signs new two-year deal
Tuesday, 3 October 2006
Emerging ruckman Jason Laycock has today signed a new two-year deal with the Bombers. A number of opposition clubs had shown interest in securing the services of the 21-year-old but the deal was done late this afternoon.

Laycock struggled with injury for much of this season. Knee, ankle and shoulder injuries all kept him sidelined for prolonged periods. Essendon fans saw a glimpse of what the 200cm ruckman is capable of on Anzac Day 2005 and will be hopeful he can keep out of the medical room in the coming seasons and realise his full potential.

In other news, 204cm rookie Lachlan McKinnon will spend a second year on the Bomber's rookie list. McKinnon was sidelined this season with a serious shoulder injury but has now fully recovered.

Essendon officials are still in negotiations with three senior players Jason Johnson, Dean Solomon and Adam McPhee who remain out of contract.

And do we take from that, that Pev, Bolton, Reynolds and Henno are gone?

Very interesting, i thought he was gone. Maybe we havent had enough intrest shown from other clubs?

Also it mentions Mckinnon is staying on the rookie list, could Cartledge be out the door?

Or maybe it's just a lesson not to believe trade rumours.

I didn't think he was untouchable but i'm glad we've kept him. Now if only he could have an injury free 12 months so we find out just how good he is!

That's annoying. Really wanted to get him.

Part of his contract states that he will receive $100 worth of free mystery bets a week from the TAB at the Essendon Social Club. Now that should last him about 5 minutes:rolleyes:

Or maybe it's not worth calling it negotiations with those guys (Pev excluded), more like "sign or see ya".

Is that to keep Bomber fans happy or do we really want Solly back?

Should end all the Gardiner BS

I'd keep Solly.
At the worst, at least until Lee/Lucy can step up.

Should end all the Gardiner BS

You'd imagine so.

Id think they'd still keep Carltidge because we allready have Ryder and Mckinnon as our Young rucks and wont be able to afford to draft another ruckman in the National Draft. I think it will come down to either Gardner or Cartlidge. I for one would like cartlidge to remain

Why would you need to draft another ruckman?
Lose Carts, gives you Laycock,Hille and Ryder developement.

thats good news because you dont develop a player to get rid of him, i still dont think we will see the best of him for another 2-3 years. It also should suggest that we will not get leunberger with our 2nd pick. JJ and solly must be in trouble now.

with laycock now signed our next priority must be mcphee. if it was out of jj or mcphee you would have to go mcphee younger and can play in a better position. and mcphee in my opinion would make a awesome chb like solly was in 99-01 period.

GET KELLY!

i am pretty sure wellman was the player that we use to free up so solly played on the bigger guys. i know when wallis was in the side he did play chb as well as they sort of rotated as to which match up was better.
look at 2001 finals series when wallis was not there solomon was playing on richo and he played on richo in round 22. he also played on a bloke called J Brown in the GF.

mcphee could make a great chb he has size and mobility to play there and can run and create at the same time.

yeah wel he had a good record on richo at that stage and they played him on brown to match physical strength but that didnt work. They were isolated incidents and he was used more as a hbf.

I actually think Ryder will make a large amount of progress in the off season...may even surpass Laycock. His tap work is clearly evident, just needs to build himself to a level where he'll become competitive when Hille needs a breather. Laycock just needs to stay injury free at the very least so we can get a good look at him on a game to game basis. for what its worth, Im hoping we take Hansen with our first pick....have heard and read enough about him to realise he would be exactly what we need down the spine. Assuming he's the best available when we get to have our first pick.

A fit Laycock and Hille would mean Ryder would struggle to get a game next year.

That is not a bad thing as his body isn't big enough at the moment. He needs to develop for another year or so.

Oh, and I am quite happy to see Laycock signing on for a few more years as I've always rated him.

It's time for him to stand up and become our no. 1 ruckman next year.

I'm looking at some stats and it says that Hille is taller than Laycock. Surely that's not right.
