View Full Version : Armitage to Brisbane at 4

According to a comment made by a member of the Hawthorn recruitment staff at a Draft forum that was held for Hawthorn fans in Canberra recently, it was commented on how "Thought that Brisbane might pull a swifty and select Armitage at 4 as he wouldn't be around with thier next turn."

Now I have never seen him play so I can't judge, but based on peoples reports I thought that Proud was more highly rated of the two (Armitage and Proud)?

I'm guessing, but I think they rate him pretty highly. He's been working in the Lions AFL shop this year, just an elevator ride away from the club.

The more "surprise" selections in the top ten the better!

But, is Armitage a better player than Proud/Jetta/Selwood?

I rate Armitage higher than most you'll see, but I still have him behind those three.

Still, if they really believe he is the best player available at that pick, then you have to pick him.

Collingwood drew fire for picking Dale Thomas at #2 and Scott Pendlebury at #5, but we rated them as the 2nd and 3rd best midfielders in the draft, and it would have been silly to pick other players because the consensus rates them higher.

From what I've read we'll pick one of either Thorp or Selwood.

We may be able to get another pick during trade week to pick up Armitage later on.

Perhaps we should just wait until the end of trade week before discussing this one. The Lions are likely to be one of the more active clubs, so we are second guessing a little as to where this 'next turn' will be.

You rated Thomas the second best 'midfielder'?

What's surprising about that?

What's surprising about that?

Maybe because 'some' don't view him as a potential permanent/quality midfielder at AFL level

I think collingwood can comfortably rest on their laurels when it comes their 'interesting' take on draft selections.

Perhaps they would use any pick received via the Aker trade to pick up Armitage rather than pick 4?

Exactly my point.
Aker, Micheal, Moody, McGrath, Bradshaw, the picture will be a little clearer the end of next week. May not need to use 4 even if they wanted him.

Just a reminder, Austin Lucy anybody?
The majority of sheep had him as our No 1 last year.
The Lions have always taken best available, & although major overhaul of the recruiting staff has occurred would be suprised if this didn't continue.

Built like an outside mid, but plays inside.

Excellent hands and is fearless at the contest.

Will take some time to bulk up, but when he does, he'll get plenty of time in the centre square. If Fox Footy was still around, you might be able to see his Round 1 game, where he played a few minutes in the middle. Was excellent and his feeds by hand were first class.

They no doubt rate the kid, but at 4? That would be the biggest bolter ever.

The general view seems to be he'll be a fair chance to still be around at the lions second pick (22). It wouldn't be ridiculous if he went at 12-16, but I'd be astonished if he went inside the top 10 at this stage.

I guess if he goes nuts at draft camp things could change but at the moment he's tends to get mentioned behind Proud, Tippet and Petterd in the Queenslanders.

Armitage looks like he could be a good player but 4 is too high this year (last year he might have been a chance). Brisbane will be hoping I think to pick up one of Armitage, Proud or Pettard once the dust settles but I can't see any of them going at 4.

Proud is getting the most comment and being a year younger looks exceptionally good for his age but Armitage and Pettard were all-Australians this year and Proud wasn't. Armitage was also the AFLQ rising star this year. In short I hope we get one of them and he ends up being the best of the bunch but I can't really tell you who that would be.

Armitage should go in the 15-20 range for mine. Using pick for him is paying way over the odds.

Wouldn't surprise me if he went at 4, although I wouldn't use a pick that early on him.

Was funny reading an article on draft camp and it had a list of 7 or so players to watch. It had Leuenberger, Gibbs, Hansen, Gumbleton, etc and then Armitage was the 7th player listed, ahead of guys like Thorp and Proud. His name does keep popping up though, which is interesting. Would be a definate top 10 chance come draft day.

I still don't think he'd go that high Macca, although there are always a few surprises come draft day. He could be one of them I guess.

I don't think he's as good as the others touted as a top 10 pick, but the way is talked about, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he went top 10.

The reason we actually avoided Ellis is that we weren't convinced of his ability to play midfield full-time at AFL level, so yes, we rated Thomas as a midfielder.

Maybe because 'some' don't view him as a potential permanent/quality midfielder at AFL level
Those would be fools who haven't watched him play, and have just gone on the pre-draft reports.

Dale Thomas spent about as much time playing as a forward as he did playing in the backline.

90% of his gametime this season came from a wing or in the centre. He has shown that he is comfortable spending almost all of his time in the midfield, so I think that is requisite proof that he is able to play permanently in the midfield.

Hmm.

Carlton - Gibbs
Essendon - Leuenberger
North - Hansen
Brisbane - Armitage
Port - Gumbleton

Yes please. :D

That would suit me just fine. They obviously think highly of him as they have an entire article on the website about him and when Morningside vs Suncoast earlier in the year they spoke of him for about half of the match report. I hope they think highly of him to use the 2nd pick they have available to pick him up... I just hope that it is early enough to get him.
