Saints off to shaky start
Sportal

Malcolm Blight has a mountain of work ahead of him if he wants to revive St Kilda in season 2001 based on their opening Ansett Cup performance against Collingwood.
The Saints were outclassed all over the field as the Magpies cruised to a comfortable 12.14 (86) to 10.8 (68) win at Colonial Stadium. In Darwin, Sydney outlasted Geelong with a 6.11 (47) to 4.10 (34) win, while at Subiaco, the Kangaroos kicked nine gola s to two after half-time to beat West Coast by 49 points, 14.12 (96) to 6.11 (47).

Despite kicking the first two goals of the match, the Saints forward line, led by Peter Everitt, disappointed throughout the match that included a goalless third quarter

Collingwood skipper Nathan Buckley with 34 possessions and the Pies other running players dominated their opposition and possession.

The Pies led by 16 at the first change before a rally in the second quarter by the Saints reduced the gap to five.

However that revival was to be short lived as the margin blew out to 38 by the final change

Shane O'Bree and Rupert Betheras ably supported Buckley across the middle while Tarkyn Lockyer impressed and ex-Docker James Clement did enough to suggest he could be a regular this year.

The Saints appeared to have improved little from last year's rabble although acting captain Andrew Thompson was his usual model of industry in midfield.

Magpie coach Mick Malthouse afterwards hosed down the likely high expectations bound to follow an impressive first-up performance like that. "I'd be horrified if this was our peak," Malthouse said. "What we learned tonight is we have got a lot of listeners and on top of that fortunately we have got some doers.''

Said Blight: "We're gradually building up to a football season and nothing is going to change with that.''

St Kilda's Tim Elliott will have an x-ray tomorrow on his collarbone, while Max Hudghton was in doubt for next week after coming off early with a hamstring strain.

Saint Barry Hall was reported in the final quarter for striking Magpies recruit Jarrod Molloy.

In Darwin, Sydney jumped to a 26-point lead at the main change in atrocious consitions at Darwin's Marrara Oval, before cruising home to a 13-point win over Geelong.

Only 10 goals were scored in the clash in which there were no multiple goalkickers.

At Subiaco, an inaccurate West Coast led the Roos by one point at the long interval, but were swamped thereafter. Sav Rocca booted four goals for the victors in an impressive first-up showing since crossing from Collingwood at the end of last season. Peter Matera booted two for the Eagles but was also reported.
