In an article on afl.com Bomber has stated that Geelong's first pick, no.7 overall, will be used on the best available talent. He wants the first pick to be Geelong's next "superstar" whether it be a tall, small, forward, midfielder or defender.

He also stated that the remaining picks will be mainly based on recruiting some speedy, athletic midfielders.

I'm stoked that they have declared this. I can't wait for the draft!

Great, I also think we need a good mobile ruckman, I think SK is gone, will be struggling to produce his best form again. I am impressed with West, they must try him next year in the pre-season comp.

Selwood.

I hope Selwood falls.

With Hawkins, and the depth of the top 10, it's like having 2 top 5 picks this year.

We better not trade that pick!

we wont get our hands on gumbleton or hansen... both will go top 5 for sure.... i wouldnt want to see us go for sellar due to his very poor under 18 carnival not even making the all star side. leunberger was brilliant and i would love to see us draft him iff available, is very good over head and had 61 hitouts for the 3 games needs bulk up a hell of a lot thoe. 1 other i would like to see us get with the first round pick is leroy jetta, a very quick small midfielder just what we need.

I am relieved to hear that Bomber is on the money about what we need. There may be hope yet.

Jetta is probably what we really need. We can live with Ottens moving into the ruck on occasion when King gets injured, yet again. So I would prefer our first pick to be a gun midfielder, someone who can out-sprint opponents and carry the ball.

Proud and Jetta seem to fit this by all accounts. A great last pick would be Zac Millar from SA, doesn't get to play much due to school commitments, but is just like Stokes only bigger. Has a great passion for the ball and commitment to match.

Noticed in Addy it stated we had only 3 picks, is this correct ?? Anyone lead me in the right direction.

At this stage i think yes. But it depends how many gets delisted between now and the draft. The more you delist or trade away, the more picks you get.

the carnival probably wasn't the best for sellar because he was crook leading into it. I think he is going to be a good player but at 195cm probably isn't going to be an AFL ruckman unless he has a real leap.

We have to have at least three picks in the draft, at the moment there are none.

Riccardi was on the vets list so doesn't count. Kingsley is going, but if we get a player for him rather than him just walking - or a draft pick, then there is no pick there, plus there may pressure to promote a rookie, that's another pick gone.

At minimum, another two players, but more likely three or four will be shown the door, or traded for picks.

Forget about Leunberger will be long gone by 7 he is the late firmer. Thorp will slip to our pick but I hope they stay away, don’t like the sound of him at all.

I have seen and heard a little on Jetta sounds and looks good to me and would top off our draft. One tall, one small (quick).

I would love another pick in the first 20. Cmon Bomber lets do some trading.

Proud will be the best avaliable at that time also fits in to what the side needs , so win/win hope he still there but you would expect he would be.

I think we need to cut our list back to 38, this is a rule of the AFL's. So you can draft 5 newbies.

McCarthey, Spencer, trade Kelly for Essendon's pick 18, Gardiner.. there is 4 sports free plus we can throw Grima on the nominated rookie list so we dont have to promote any rookies... Maybe we could get rid of Kingsley for a pick 35 - 45? Steve Johnson is in the same boat... Plenty of options.. Geelong need to swing the axe and take some risks before the rebuilding phase again!

Actually.. they need to create a positive, non-arrigant culture down there for starters and getting rid of Kelly and Johnson would help that cause dramatically. As I see it, Kelly kept Prismall out at the start of the year and Johnson was just making up numbers in the forward line. Would hope to see a few more of the younger guys getting an earler chance next year (Prismall, Stokes and Gamble in particular..)

Leuenberger would be a good choice.

Proud would also be a great choice, probably better than Jetta due to a little more height and a little more grunt. Add good speed and good disposal, and he fits our needs exactly.

Selwood would be a bad choice. Great player, but we don't need him after Corey, Bartel, etc.

Why is that on Thorpe? I've only heard positive's about him. He's an athletic KPP, and how many of those can we say we have? I think Brisbane will pick him at #4, but if they don't, he may fall to #7 and we should jump on him.

Selwood's not a pacy midfielder and basically a West/Cross type of player. We have enough of those already, so I'd go for Albert Proud who offers run and carry, but can also win the hard-ball.

If we could trade Kelly to Essendon for one of their picks, then we could say draft Thorp at 7, and use 20 and 25 on quick midfielders that would be around 1st round picks in any other draft year.

anyone ever considered the south australian captain tom hurley?? in my books he is heavily underated. he averaged more disposals then bryce gibbs did for the tournament and was a fine leader for his team. had the equal most disposals for the carnival

I'm hardly surprised they're saying they'll go for 'best available'. That's what they're meant to do with a high pick.

I have no idea who they'll go for but a speedy midfielder might be one to chase since we have a guaranteed KPP prospect and we have three rucks (four if you include King). I'm not sure another junior ruck prospect is what we need, which sounds like this Leuenberger kid.

Firstly let me say I know nothing about any of the draftees except what I read in the papers. But.........if we (Geelong's recruiters) think Selwood is going to be a gun (and a bigger gun than Proud, Jetta etc) then we should draft him.

Yes we have some good inside players (and a fair number of them), but I don't rate any of them as exceptional (except maybe GAJ but he doesn't get played there enough and is still learning to deal with a tag). I don't know the stats but I wouldn't be surprised if we are down the bottom of the list in clearances from stoppages. It seems to me that this is an area that we really need to improve. So go for Selwood if he is the best available when our pick comes around!

i reckon we have gotten the best deal out of this draft easily.. we have the number 1 pick (tom hawkins) and we have the number 7 draft pick. no one else has 2 draft picks in the top 10.

how isnt he pick 1?? he was the best player in the under 18 carnival and the vic metro coach said that he is the best player he has seen at this level and has been coaching for 10 years. he also almost broke the all time contested mark record falling 5 short because he played his last game in the pouring rain. holds the record still for devision 1 regardless

Whether or not Tom would have gone number one is both academic and irrelevent. I mean, I've never understood what exactly it achieved. Does it make people feel that much more giddier?

Word from a few Bendigo folk is that Selwood MkIII is the best of the brothers.

Basically. It's the psychological thing of thinking that your team has its hands on the best young prospect in the country. Whether it pans out that way is another thing, but it's a source of hope.

Not that No.2, 3 etc are really going to be any worse generally.

I may be looking into this too much, but it sounds as though you guys won't be picking a midfielder with your first pick, and a KPP/ruckman is will be going at pick 7. I expect that most if not all of Leuenberger, Gumbleton, Hansen, Thorp and Sellar will be gone by pick 7 (1 may slip through), but as it's not at all unlikely that none will slip through, then you would have your eyes on another KPP with pick 7. Too early for Riewoldt IMO, maybe Caleb Mourish is a real possibility with this pick?

If Gumbleton, Hansen, Leuenberger, Thorp and Sellar are gone the next bestplayers are:
Selwood
Jetta
Proud

I think we will get one of these. A smoky could be Armitage.

Pacey midfielders?

Argh. They're so hit and miss, especially at Geelong.

I'd rather take Andrejas Everitt with our second pick. A flexible, but project defender.

As for Selwood, is he really that good? How serious was his injury and could it be recurring? We already took the risk with Varcoe and he is definitely behind the 8 ball. I'd like to take somebody who doesn't have any injury concerns and is just a damn good player. I don't care if it takes them 2 years to make it either.

Oh and on a side note, i think if Jack Riewoldt is available, Thompson will take the kid with our first pick.

Whether we should or not is irrelevant, just a feeling i have.

I like the thought of Everitt in the 2nd round. I remember watching him in the first Under 18 Champ's game, and his run and creativity out of defence (which is something we SORELY lack), was a feature in the Vic's win over S.A.

Not sure if he's rated on the top 25 though, but he's a guy I think we'll certainly look at for our 2nd rounder.
