The Essendon Football Club are still in negotiations with Jason Johnson and Dean Solomon, but are confident of reataining their services.
At the moment, the fine details are being past forward and back between the club and the managers.
Both are still being offered a one year contract.

If it's true that's a relief.
We dont want 2 lose both of them.
Soloman adds toughness to our somewhat soft backline. Johnson had a good 2nd half of the year & it'd b a shame 2 c him go.

I think the two will stay, the club say they are required players, and the only reason there is so much hype surrounding the two is because trade week is not too far away.

I think it's because Essendon only offered them 1 year deals.

The 1 year deal theory is correct, I saw it on the Essendon official website.
Johnson wanted a 2 yr. deal but they only offered him 1 though.
In my opinion he is one of our top players surely we could offer him a 2 yr. deal? It's not like we cant afford it.

I agree. A 1 year deal is just a slap in the face for JJ in my opinion.
I think it was fair to give it to Solly as he needs to lift his game next year.

Correct, they are not happy about being offered on one year contracts, but you may find they will sign the one year contracts which will contain bonuses, and if they meet the requirements then mid year next year could have the contracts extended. This is most likely in the Johnson contract.

That's a good response i wouldnt have thought about that.
However, i really think what u said should only apply to Solly, my reason 4 this is because we saw what JJ is capable of. Sure, he had a lousy 1st half of the year, got dropped, but then came back & played perhaps the best footy of his career.
With solly i saw nothing to get overly excited about.

With Solly, I think you may find that he more so met the challenges Sheedy asked of him, however in playing that role for Sheedy, the football world/Essendon's members and supporters saw something else, a poor no fuss year..."nothing to get overly excited about". And if you want to play at the highest level, you'll do whatever your coach asks.

Oh ok,
I dunno how u came up with that, but it sounds pretty spot-on.
But do u reckon solly would b better off playing under a different coach?
I've heard that Melb & Freo r his preffered club if he has 2 leave.
Plus, while im on the subject of leaving... do u reckon Sheedy should continue coaching the EFC?
Coz in my opinion i like sheeds & would like him 2 stay, but on the other hand maybe a fresh face could do Essendon the world of good?

On Solly playing under a different coach, I don't think it would make much of a difference. Yes maybe his role would change, but I think Sheeds knew that 2006 was going to be a tough year, so he wanted Sol to fill a position he thought Sol was capable of, to help others around him and for the team.
As much as I rate him (Sheedy) and highly respect him, I do think it is time for a new face at Essendon. The only reason I say this is because some players could come complacement at Essendon. But that's beause he is more than just a coach.

I agree with that. Solly played a purely negating role in most games this season, and while he may not have excelled, I think that he did reasonably well. There weren't too many big bags of goals kicked on him and he took on some big jobs. Gerry, Fev, Murphy, Hall etc.

I can recall at least 3 games where he had more than 4-5 goals kicked on him.
But i have 2 say that on those games Fletcher was out & Solly had 2 take the oppositions most dangerous goalkicker.
Looking back on his year i had thought it was a very disappointing 1, but now i realise he was put on hard opposition each & every week.
He doesnt deserve the bad publicity he has recieved.

Your right about that. AFL is a tough game, and it throw all sorts of challenges at you. He did what he was required to do.
Solly needs to drop 5kgs. If he did that he would get his pace back. In 2000-2001 he was awesome. His chest is to big.

I agree that Solly needs to drop some weight, He has spent 2 much time in the gym & not enough time on the track.
If he gets some of that pace back, like in 2000 (the golden days) he will be a much improved & versatile player.
But we dont want 2 lose much of his muscle though.
