Play begins in 45 minutes.
Carn the Aussies!
Post your score updates here.
Australia 0/22. Hayden dropped on zip. Sides have paid for that in the past. Easy catch to Kallis at 2nd slip.
Hayden is making South Africa pay - just hit Ntini for two fours in a row and the field is spreading abit.
Their 0/32 of 8 overs and looking pretty good. A few loose shots, but that can be expected first morning of a test series.
Kallis should have swallowed Hayden - probably the hardness of the new ball that cost him the catch.

Looks like a very good wicket...good even bounce, bit of pace and a bit in it for the bowlers...not an easy catch to Kallis but not one he should have missed. Ntini has bowled quite quick, one @ 151 k.
0/32 off 8

Yet another 100 for Hayden off of 149 balls with 14 fours and 2 sixes.
Score now 3/230 with S.Waugh at the crease on 1 after M.Waugh was out caught down the leg side off of Ntini.

Hayden really needs to go on and make a BIG 100. That should put em out of the game. Aussies havee batted well, but have had a few breaks with a couple of mis hits landing safely. Ntini has bowled well, rest of em, less said the better at the moment.

The Aussies are going very well, but Ricky Ponting copped a real "Barry Crocker" of a decision. He was given out caught behind when there was a huge gap between the bat & the ball!!
Oh well, shut heppens!! Ooops, wrong accent!! :D:D
Australia: 3 for 247

4/292 78 OVERS
5/331 at stumps
*Allan Donald "straining" his right hamstring
*Matty Hayden's century after being dropped on 0
*Gilchrist 25* Martyn 21*
The first two sessions will be crucial tomorrow. If Gilly and Marto can put on a decent partnership and maybe push the score up to around 450 plus, then it will certainly put Australia in the box seat.

Great run-rate by the Australians with the exception of Steve Waugh who slowed down the innings once again (ie. 32 from 98 balls). If Boof way playing we could have scored 400 in a day! Can't see the Aussies loosing from here & should score 450+ with the assistance of the tail.

Martyn caught on the boundary by Kirsten off Kallis for 133. Record 6th wicket partnership against SA - 317 runs from 62 overs. 2nd best 6th wicket partnership for Australia of all-time (Bradman & Fingelton still hold the record).
South African commentators were wondering what strategy Warney & Gilly were discussing ... ummm ... keep slogging me thinks. Waugh should declare at lunch.
Kane McGoodwin
23 Feb 2002, 22:00
Gilly just hit 2 sixes in a row - & the Proteas have 2 deep mid-wicket fielders & a long on. The 2nd one has disappeared out of the ground & the Umps are calling for a new ball.
Gilchrist just hit 2 sixes in a row to be on 191*.

One of the commentators made a good point last night. When Australia had a left hand/right hand combination batting, the SA attack couldn't find a consistent line to bowl. But as soon as Hayden got out, they had 2 righthanders in (Waugh, Martyn) and they could bowl on a consistent line. After Waugh was out, another leftie came in and straight away, they struggled to find a good line again and got punished.
So, IMHO, it wasn't like Waugh was trying to slow the runrate, Martyn was slow in that period, too. SA bowled to their field better in that period.

Current career battings averages all on the way up:
Martyn 57.25
Gilchrist 57.09
Hayden 49.25 (only a matter of tests before this is above 50 too)

7/643 Warne out for 12 just on tea. Gilly stuck on 199 - will Waugh declare? Probably will have to bat on now.

Hippie - Whilst I appreciate it is usually advantageous to have a LH/RH combination, you will find that S Waugh would have the slowest run-rate of the Aussie bats over the last year or so. Still deserves to be captain of the team, but Lehmann should be playing instead of M Waugh.

essendon supporter or not, you're a f ucken d ickhead. go and watch baseball or something idiot. i guess steve should have declared at 300 or so, shouldn't he? why don't you criticise the crap opposition who can't take a wicket to save themselves? make a game of it? that's right, that's why they play, to make the game even, so that the result is a 1 wicket win, or a 1 run win, in the last over of the 5th day. watching grass grow huh? nearly 200 runs in a session is like watching grass grow? maybe they should have scored about 60 runs in the session instead. gilchrist just scored the fastest test double century in TEST CRICKET HISTORY and you're not satisfied. f uck off moron.
the declaration has come f uckwit. maybe boucher will declare at 150 or so, cos we don't want to watch grass grow do we?

Yep, this has to go down as one of the most boring test matches of all time. bring back the days of prolonged tests that last 5 days, when 220 runs were scored each day. this test match will be forgotten within a few days, nothing significant happened. apparently our wicket keeper, whats his name again, scored a run or two, but i have to admit, i didn't notice cos i slept right through it! it was just that boring.
thank god the ladies golf was on this weekend. i think i actually did see some grass grow there.
Tell me, aside from the result, would you prefer to see three day tests like this or five day tests like the one we lost in India last year?
Which is more exciting? Or is winning all you care about?

Which is more exciting? Or is winning all you care about? I would say that India tour was without doubt the best cricket I have seen.Every wicket and run was a struggle. You could not look away.I still cant believe we lost that series.

Exactly. The test against RSA was a great win with some fantastic efforts, but edge of the seat stuff it was not.
I still cant believe we lost that series.
Me either :(

The India tour was fantastic to watch.
Ridiculous umpiring decisions and all. ;)

considering that this is the 2nd greatest test victory ever, i doubt the next two matches will mimic this one. the last session of the 3rd test in india was fabulous stuff, even though we lost. i think we should just accept matches as they are, be they 3 days or 5 days. let's hope that the only predictability about test match cricket is its unpredictability (and variability).

How about we also accept that people's opinion of games may not match our own without calling them ********s too?

thanks for the asterisks, maybe next time you might attempt some clarity. re windyhill, it was a stupid stupid comment and he deserved it. some people have an opinion that flying planes into buildings is justified. they could expect a similar retort. don't believe the hype (that [some] opinions are neither right nor wrong).

Why, did you abuse someone else too?

That's hardly a valid comparison and you ought to have enough sense to know it.
don't believe the hype (that [some] opinions are neither right nor wrong).
Some aren't. In this case the opinion expressed was not deserving of the scorn poured on it.
