Vanders traded to Box Hill
The Hawks are wrapt to have secured Box Hill's 82 year-old head trainer in a direct trade for captain Ritchie Vandenberg on the first day of trading at AFL house.
Coach Clarkson says he hopes the new trainer will add great value and experience to a young playing group.
"Nabbing Box Hill's lead trainer is a real coo for us. You know we had the comp bluffed for the past few years with having a decoy captain in Ritchie, but that gag can only last so long," said coach Clarkson.
"I'm sure most supporters, although a little shocked, will agree we're much better off without Vanders as the bloke can't kick, handball or even punch properly."
Box Hill president, Mafuud Tingles said it was as a tough call to lose the head trainer, even though he has been suffering from breathing difficulties for the past 12 years and requires the use of a ventilator to stay alive.
"We know we've been dudded in this trade" said Mafuud, "We obviously won't be expecting much...Maybe a back pocket possie in the twos or something - I'm still disappointed with the trade, but obviously we had to bow to Hawthorns requests on this one - so whatever really at this stage."
