Anyone on this board play club footy?
I do, I played for Altona Vikings U14 2nd Divison (I prefer to call it this instead of C's, because we dont have a B's team :o). I played in a team that had finished 4th on the ladder.
Now I am moving upto U16's next season. I really think I can match it with the bigger boys. Because I was told I have a good mixture of crash 'n bash, smarts, courage and aggression.
I'd like to play as a centreman or ruck-rover, because I have the ability to dish of 10-15 metre handpasses from winning hardball. Hanballing and tackling are my favourite things in footy. I originally began because my friend did it, I quickly learnt to to drop punt 30 metres easily (I can kick 45 at my peak) and tackling had been something I was good at since I was 3 :p
My favourite game I have ever played in was the final match of this season (I have only played one season). I collected 41 disposals as a ruckmen/ruck-rover. We were playing the cellar dweller team, Hoppers Crossing.
I will always remember when my bst friend marks the ball on the half-back line, kicked it to me on the wing. I took an uncontested mark and saw the only person near me was a slow boy. So I took of, 1 bounce, 2 bounce, 3 bounce, I had sprinted 90 metres with the ball. I went for a shot at goal, but our rover grabbed it on the line and snapped a goal. :)
So do you play club footy?

I know it is much anticipated but i need Fardoulys to give me a new shoulder. I'm seeing him after uni finishes for the op. Hopefully, full steam ahead after that. :D :o
Anyway, i don't think i could match your 25-disposal performance in the GF as captain.

Ahh West Juniors...
Or the ol' cricket-score team as they were known. I got frostbite one day playing in defence against them. But that was a while ago.

Great to hear of your exploits on-field shermy. Haven't played club footy in 10 years and doubt I'd have any chance of getting back to my playing weight!!! One piece of advice to you - learn to kick well on both feet. :)

When I was in primary school I did (at different times): swimming, hockey (right winger), tennis and volleyball. Volleyball was my favourite. I wish to play soccer in the future maybe.

I got to play at the Gabba in 95 for the under 10s. I swear i was given Roger Merrett's jumper to wear. I tucked it in, but it was still poking out of the bottom of my shorts it was that big. And i had to run around with one hand in my pocket so my dacks didn't fall down.
I don't think any of us were really worried about the game. We just wanted to dive on the Coca-Cola sign on the middle of the ground so we would be covered in the red paint.

Son did the Auskick thing on the Gabba. Gave him a bit of fatherly advice before the BIG game. Great tough footballers wear socks down & jumper out - none of the "girly-boy" socks up & jumper neatly tucked in for Fatty Jnr.
Well, he listened to the advice. Socks down, jumper out - looking like an unmade bed - perfect. After doing his best to look the part, he was so excited about gracing the Gabba, he actually skipped/minced his way onto the ground !!! Cracked us all up!
Anyway Sherminator, take the advice
Rule 1 - socks down
Rule 2 - jumper out
Rule 3 - don't skip onto the ground
The rest is easy!!

Has anyone played that non-contact aussie rules they have been advertising? I might give it a go seeing as my shoulder is gone. What could have been! :p
We should register a BigFooty team - then the donuts could actually play for real.
Has anyone else got a few club footy stories? I have a couple i will post at a later time.

Used to play along side Rhan Hooper a few years ago for Strathpine swans. And absolutely smashed Rhan in all areas of the game, but didn’t get along with him very well because he was extremely arrogant and he bashed some umpire.

By the sounds of it I'd be a Black, you'd be a Voss. Perfect :).
Heres a story. Pretty dumb.
It was round 2 of the season and we were versusing North Sunshine. I was line up on a bigger, stronger framed forward (I play defense sometimes). He said 'You any good?'
I said- 'Yeah I am okay, I suppose'
He look at me funnily. Then I pushed him, he retaliated by punching me in the ribs and collarbone, so I said 'I am 'gonna get you'.
And I meant it.
3rd Quarter of the match the ball had spilled in their forward pocket. This bigger byo was sprinting for the ball, I was sprinting towards it, too. The next moment I fly backwards and I am staring at clouds.
I slowly get back to my feet and see this taller boy was in a foetal position and crying. His teammates begun pushing me around, obviously because I had just capped off a good game with sweet, sweet revenge. :o
I had 30+ disposals as a CHB. 23 marks. :D

That's not very nice.
Yes, I am an umpire.:o
Gave up playing when I moved to Queensland as my capabilities were not good enough for the QAFL as it was at the time, and I decided not to get bashed in the old SQAFA.
Did pretty well at umpiring until I got injured 12 years ago. Now I just field umpire in the juniors and do some goal umpiring in the seniors. Sometimes I think playing in the old SQAFA might have been safer.

Well if you go on to aflq.com.au and go to inside league and look at the clubs you should find one relatively close, other than div 1 and 2, dont ask me what the standards like as i havent seen them. Warwick
18th October 2006, 23:06
Dude, speaking from a physio's viewpoint i would strongly advise you to take it easy on the weights (if you are 14). Trying to add 5 kilos through weight training at your age is unreasonable. You should be doing light resistance or exercises using your body as the resistance.
It may seem like a good idea at the time, but it can lead to all sorts of complications down the track. Often those who put on that sort of weight when they are young get overtaken by everyone else when they are around 18-19.
The main risk is stress-fractures. They can destroy the career of a young athlete because they are very hard to fix (particularly if you are still growing).
Sorry to preach to you, but just be careful and set reasonable goals.

Sherminator - as Warwick said it's not good to do much weights at your age. You need to get some good advice. The best thing is to use your own body as a weight (push ups, chin ups etc) and mix with light weights.

I've seen guys (mostly rowers and footy players) come into the clinic diagnosed with serious stress fractures becasue of the amount of weights they were doing. One guy i have helped manage was a gun rower when he was 15 or 16 but he simply did too much, and he missed 3 years because of it. All the guys that he used to beat have overtaken him easily.

Ahh yes not a bad option, i know/knew (i think he got the axe) the senior coach from this year. I am lead to believe the senior side made finals and the reserve side may have won the GF, but dont hold that to me. Hey, my old team! Well to be true, I played 3 games in the twos about 10 years ago!!!
You'll be fine Chez...

Senior Coach is Travis Warren, a very nice guy.
Got back about an hour ago, was very hard, the first hour and half was pure fitness and strength work. I have very little upper body strength so I struggled throughout the entire session
When it came to ball skills, I guess I did alright, I need to work on my kicking accuracy and distance, but besides that I really enjoyed the night. Everyone welcomed me pretty nicely. So yeah :D

2nd Trainin session tonight. Bloody exhausted again, could not finish two of the skill based drills because I screwed myself doin 6 sets of 300 metres and trying chin ups. (I DID 4.5!!!!11!!!!1 :D)
Time for drastic measures.... No more beer on weeknights (I've been averaging 3 a night), gym everyday, STRAIGHT onto the tredmills and bikes. And I'm gettin a weights program I can follow at long bloody last. Less time on my arse in front of my TV and Computer (god bless laptops)
And for gods sake, I need a job.... NOW :D

I have been doing serious mountainbiking for awhile now, maybe you could use some pointers on how to build up very strong calves/quads/hamstrings aswell as burning off excess fat.
Have a mountain bike? Use it!
To start off, begin with smooth, long distance (15km is a good startign target) to get a core fitness.
Now, if you're like me and want the maximum ammount you can phyiscally and mentally squeeze out of yourself, start riding uphill! This is 10x more strenuous in 1/2 of time.
Get agood mountainbike. I am currently riding a Giant 21" Rincon 2007 and it slaughters it up-hill, down-hill, on and off road!As for riding uphill, everday now, I ride the same 70mtr long slope (between 70 and 85 degrees approx in angle) 5 times at minimum. After doing it so many times now it isn't as painful as it was at first but it still gets the adrenaline running, stopping you feeling all that burning sensation you get from maximum workouts.
As for a weight programs, I am not following one, instead I follow a fitness program made by the Australian Defence Force, I haven't began running yet because it of the shock it can cause on my broken thumb.
All the best,
Rohan

I'm checking out the UQ Red Lions. If anything they might my best shot at playing again as they are affiliated with Wests Jrs Bulldogs where I coach atm. Only thing that holds me back is me lack of physique :( Oh why do I have to be skinnier then Kevin Bartlett?! :(
They have already started pre-season training mate, u better get down there as soon as u can. They got a good mix of players, State Association Div 1 Reservers won premiership last yr, think went through undefeated.:thumbsu:

OOps my mistake man, didnt read the posts on this pg....ya they got a bunch of good players, esp in their third team who should be playing in the 2nds and 1sts in a few yrs.
One thing i suggest is that u should work on ur core, that is a very important factor in playing well. Things like crunches and reverse crunches would start if off, also ask the conditioning coach their, they r using someone from the uni this yr i think..
They got something on the UQ Lions website http://www.redlions.org.au under 2007 link with preparing for the 07 season.

Yeah Jubair, I'm in me second week of pre-season training. Due to me overdoin it last night, I've been given a modified trainin schedule to work on my cardiovascular area. The fitness coach is from the Uni, specializing in Human Movement. He's given me a trainin schedue to do for three weeks.
First game is 24 March against Redcliffe. I'm hopin in 3-4 weeks I will be in good enough shape.

BUMPALICIOUS!
I feel I've done alright the last few weeks, I've been running and training hard down at UQ, which includes tennis with my mates family (my second family :) )
I have a intra-club match in about 2 weeks at Mt Gravatt. Two practise matches I know of against Coorparoo and Robina (The team I followed a couple of years back)
Got a social also coming up. Friends are invited, so expected all of yous to get to the Elephant Wheelbarrow on the 3rd of March. Especially all you crazy young 18 year drunks. I for one have giving up the booze for a while :O Next time I drink in public.... Round 1, 2007 :D

Good to hear Chezza. I began proper training Thursday (delayed training due to broke thumb) and we had to run 9 km's! In 38 degree humid weather!
I am not too confident I will begin ball skills when we begin doing them (handballing is out, I will attempt marking and kicking) and will just join in for support and do alot of running while they do ball skills (which'll begin in 3 weeks, coaches want us to build a good fitness base).
I am hoping for a good year, as soon as I am confident about my thumb, I'll be throwing myself into packs and smashing bones week in, week out.

Hey Chezwick good to hear you are kicking around in mighty state association. I play for the Alex Hills Bombers, might come up against you at some stage:p
Just reading through the thread I also noticed you said something about Forest Lake in 2003. That grand final didn't happen to be against Ormiston College did it?

Footy training again, today. We ran the circuit again, it was much easier the second time and I finished 4 minutes faster and several spots up the ladder (not top 10). I want to be top 10, so I am going to do alot of running on my days off (except for weekends, biking and fishing take that up). But also practice my skills.
We did a bit of kicking and handballing drills, I like handball drills (I was confident with my thumb), I am good with my hands, I can handpass 15 metres. But with kicking, that's where my problem lays,my kicking wasn't great, maybe because my runners (we aren't allowed to wear boots yet) are a tad too big (Size 13.5 Mens), Mum says I will grow into them no worries. So I have to find my footy and have it at all times, kicking it wherever I get the chance to.
My coaches says if I improved my overall understanding of the game and kicking, I could play for a development squad. I'd like that, but I am only a gun in 2nd Division. In 1st Division I seem to be a solid player, but not spectacular.

LOL!! I couldn't agree more. And we had to put up with them for the whole season! We certainly had more than our fair share of knuckleheads over at OC:o

I remember when I was in year 5, I was supposed to face Ormiston College in a two day cricket match. Bloody rain.
Ahhh well, its quite possible I might be working out that way soon, at one of the private schools out there. Going to be hectic, driving out there, then balancing playing for UQ, coaching at Wests Jrs and Touch Footy. But at least I'l have money for booze, and spending vast amounts at the Lions Den. Cozi will know what I'm talking about ;)

Intra-Club Match was tonight. Because we have a huge playing group (3 teams, 105 players at training on Tuesday)
There was split into two seperate games (2 halves each, 20 minutes each). I played in the second game, started in the mid-field, racked up about 3 possessions, before struggling and coming straight off for the rest of the half. 5 minutes into the second half, I fulfilled a dream and was placed in Centre Half Forward, and booted a goal, I racked up two or three more possession through marks.
Next week UQ travel to Coorparoo I believe to take on those damn Coorparooians :D BRRIIIIIIIIING IT OOOOOOOOON!

105 blokes!!!! Holy smokes.
Trial match against Coorparoo next week you say? I've been lead to believe that my side is playing a trial agaisnt Coorparoo this weekend, although I could be mistaken, I never was one for listening at training:p
We had a match against the reigning premiers Yeronga on the w/e, soundly beaten but we look in better shape than last season:thumbsu:
