Yep, just heard that. Note, I was one of those SMSers telling SEN that they fooled me by saying every few minutes that he'd be on. ;)

Spida - Several discussions, slowly making some progress. Re-iterated the fact we wouldnt trade a 3rd round pick for Spida.
There WAS a 3rd club, it isn't a joke (:p). Made an agreement with that club not to disclose the name.
Hay deal last year doesn't set the precedent from the Hawks point of view. "Its a new year"...
Bret Thornton - Carlton still ISNT speaking to Hawthorn. Carlton spoke to Anthony McConville last night, trying to get Bret to come around. Bret is WILLING to make a move through the PSD.
"Bret has made it clear that he wants to come to Hawthorn."
"Harry Miller deal for Toby Thurstans has never been brought up."
DRAFT: VERY INTERESTING - Was asked whether he'll be 'Picking for the best available or picking for positions'. Pelchen replied saying "It's actually more the latter. We've implimented a particular recruiting model over the past 18 months and we'll stick with it. But we are sticking with our RECRUITING MODEL."
"There are two players in particular that we are looking at."
"I disagree with other recruiters, last years draft was under-rated. That's why we traded very aggressively to get picks in the Top 20."
"This year, while is definitely is talented - the TOP 8 is spectacular, from Pick 9 onwards it's fairly even." (I think this means we wont be trading Pick 6. :D)
Meets with 3-4 managers every month to ascertain when players are coming out of contract.

Sorry mate, was on for less than 5 mins and gave away nothing ... If you missed the interview you missed nothing ...
Re-iterated that the Hawks definitely would not trade Spider for a third Round Pick.
He also confirmed that there was no discussion about Harry Miller whatsoever.
Lastly confirmed that Carlton are still not talking on Thornton ...
Phil will give you a more detailed and better update ...

His point about the recruiting model I thought was very, very interesting. Whenever you hear a recruiting coach being asked who they'll pick, it's always "The best available."

I'm not so sure Dipper. What have Carlton got to gain by upsetting players further?
If they think this will help with their player retention, they are fools. Can you imagine being forced back to Carlton if you are Thornton.
It also begs the question, who will they select Thornton or Russel.
In my opinion it's all, "Huff n Puff" and they will trade both of them.
If they don't can you imagine the internal anger by the player they re-draft (if they do) or the alternative situation of losing both of them for nothing.
Carlton are just expressing anger and I think might still trade them both ...

That is a damn good question, Luke. If a trade for either of those players isn't confirmed by Friday, which one would they choose with Pick 1 in the PSD?

You would probably have to say Russell I would think? He would present more value in the open market.

Tricky question, but I'd have to say Thornton. They've acted a lot more aggresively to the proposal of Thornton going, so you'd think the signs suggest him. Russel's an SA boy as well, and has never really shown a lot, so Carlton would be more open to him leaving.
It was brought up on the Carlton boards then Pagan has stood by his word in the past, which does kinda worry me. Then again, if they do retain them, it threatens to seriously derail not just these two but the whole playing group.

Port looks pretty keen to recruit him, seeming as though he's from South Australia originally. Not too sure if many, if any, other clubs have expressed interest in him, so maybe theres no as much value in him as Carlton would like to think.

Exactly, Pagan is that type of bloke, a stubborn old fool.
Thornton will not be at the HFC next year. I put my money on either Essendon or Carlton in the PSD.

Last week Roos said 1st and 2nd round picks were out of the question. That didn't last long did it.
Go for the jugular Chris. Accept nothing but a first rounder. I don't care how old Spida is. They don't want him for 10 years. They want him to help them to another flag or two. How important is success to Sydney in their battle with the NRL? How much is a flag worth to Sydney? And why should we help them get it on the cheap?
If they're willing to pay him 800k over 2 years as reported, then they rate him. Why then is only a 2nd round pick coming the other way.
Name me a 2nd round pick who started on 400K. (I'm not sure what the doggies are paying Aker and what they're giving up to get him, so I better get this in now).
Spida is a quality footballer who the swans see as possibly being the difference between another flag or just another finals appearance.
Why did the swans beat the cats in that final last year? Because Davis kicked the goal at the deathknock? Well who got the ball to him? Jason Ball, Ruckman.
Why did the swans win the grannie last year. because whoever it was kicked that last goal, (Buchanan??). Well who got the ball to him? Jason bloody ball, ruckman, that's who.
You want another shot at the title Swannies. You want to plug the one gaping hole in your structure. Not just with some stop gap try hard, but with a first rate AA tap ruckman. You have how many stoppages a game? over 100! Gee what a difference a great tap ruck would make with all those opportunities to work his magic.
By all means, go for it, we're happy to help out to get you over the line. And in return for helping you get this flag, all we're asking is you help us finish the rebuild of our team so we might get a similar shot at the big time in a few years.
And the cost of our assistance to you. A mere pick 15 in the draft.
It's a bargain and you bloody well know it!!
Pick 15 Chris, accept nothing less!
This is a massive feather in the cap for Pelchen, we must hold onto him because he will no doubt get some offers from other clubs.

TAC, my friend. Pelchen has deliberately gone out of his way this draft to try and make people think that he seriously believes that Spida is worth a 1st Round Pick.
Let's go through his quotes.
4/10/06 Australian article (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,20526189-2722,00.html)
Pelchen said Hawthorn would not accept Sydney's second-round pick of 33 - or any higher - in exchange for Everitt.
To 5/10/06
Age article
(http://www.smh.com.au/news/afl/high-price-on-everitt-may-lead-him-to-draft/2006/10/03/1159641325029.html)
"We won't accept a third round [pick]. That is an absolute guarantee," said Hawthorn's general manager of player personnel, Chris Pelchen.
And now we're at the stage where we are more than willing (most likely), to accept Sydneys 2nd round pick.
Don't be suprised to see Pelchen balk at Sydneys offer first up. He'll want Sydney to believe constantly that a 2nd round pick is what he's worth, and Pelchen will be looking to other avenues to see them raise that perhaps to a 1st Rounder.
It's going to be an interesting few days.

There's the brink of reality and there's the abyss which most of us Hawks fan seem to have fallen into...anyone with half a football brain knows spider is not worth pick 15 in this draft.
If Pelch wants to keep playin then he's chewing up the next 3 days on this deal where it could be spent elsewhere...imo this will be the last trading week will be heavily involved in for the next 3-4 years!!

Sorry guys I dont see what the big deal is. He has managed to get an offer of sydneys very late 2nd round pick for spider. Which is probably reasonable or a bit underpaying. Of course roos wasnt going to offer it straight up - as we are with everitt start high and then work down to something more reasonable - its called negioating.
I think this obession with pelchin and the deals hes going to do is becoming unhealthy on these boards.
While he won on the hay deal (perhaps more due to laidleys stupidity than anything else) dont forget that he almost traded sewell (3rd this years B&F) for ferguson (whos down nothing this year) and also almost traded pick 22 for thornton (but couldnt complete the deal in time).
We cannot judge his effort til the end of trade week - this 'pelchin is killing them' attitude after 2 days of trading and no results yet is narrowminded at best.
Come on people this board has had reasoned, thoughtful and intelligent discussion on it for the whole season yet suddenly things have reverted back to just pages full of crap like the main board on bigfooty. It truly is the silly season.

Greed is good.
Pick 33 is almost giving him away. Pelchen said tonight that the draft was very even from 9-25. He didn't even mention anything about the players lower than 25. I wonder if he said that to reinforce that Sydney's pick 33 is of no interest to us?
Go for 15, if we get nothing then I'm really not fussed. Spida wouldn't be a part of any assault on the flag we might make in the next few years and pick 33 would be at reasonably long odds to deliver us a gun or even just a very good player who would be a part of that assault.
The swans have the most to lose here. Their premiership window is now and Spida finishes their team off perfectly.
Pick 15 Roosy. You know it makes sense.
If Aker is worth pick 30-35, we won't get 15 for Everitt, we have done extremely well to get what we have.
Pick 24 and 33 should be enough to secure Thornton
