Waverley Park will host the 24-man International Rules squad next week as the players prepare to travel to Ireland for the 2006 series.

Hawks Chance Bateman and Campbell Brown will join 22 of their counterparts from 13 AFL teams for International Rules Series’ training sessions scheduled on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 October at Waverley Park.

AFL spokesperson Patrick Keane said Waverley Park was chosen as this year’s training venue because of its outstanding facilities.
“Waverley Park has outstanding facilities and it gives our team the best possible preparation heading into the International Rules Series,” he said.

“Our Football Operations department was aware of the quality of the facility and the number of coaching tools that are available which will allow us to give the players a lot of information in a short amount of time.

“The players will be coming back after a break from training so rehab is gong to be a high priority for us and with the facilities at Waverley the players are going to be able to prepare really well.”

The squad, coached by Essendon’s Kevin Sheedy, will depart Melbourne on Saturday 21 October to defend the Cormac McAnallen trophy.

“We really surprised Ireland last year with our pace and skill of our team and we are no doubt better placed this year as we raise our efforts,” Keane Said.

The first test will be played at night on Saturday 28 October at Pearce Stadium with the second test played at Croke Park on Sunday 5 November.

Open training sessions at Waverley Park, Stadium Circuit Mulgrave will be held on:

• Friday 20 October 10.30am
• Saturday 21 October 10am

I really envy all you Melbournians who are lucky enough to see all these guys train on our oval! If you've ever wondered what it'd be like to see players like Reiwoldt and O'Keefe in Hawk colours, this is the closest you'll ever get to that! :D

O'Keefe is an out and out gun, but IMO Riewoldt is over rated

Yeah I thought Buddy was a cert to be selected for some reason! How the hell can he be toying with the idea of putting Bradley in?? Putting bombers needs and player development before the country me thinks!

Doesn't this look good for the HFC, we are above everyone.

If Buddy nominated himeself to play, I'm sure the club would have said he couldn't.

Sheedy is too old to undertsand the new young guns and thats why he left Buddy out of the team, just imagine if he was there he would be zig zagging and booting goals from all over the place , the Irish wuldnt know whats going on.

The AFL should get Demetrio to get a young gun coach like Clarkson or Worsfold to coach because they are the future and understand the new way of coaching. Sheedy is too old and Demetrio is just giving his mate Sheedy an overseas trip because he knows he is finsihed as a coach.

Agree. Just wait for all our young guns get even better. Our Hawks team might play Ireland. Imagine this. Buddy, Ellis, Birch, Laddo, Chance, Hodgy, Sammy, Gerra, Tucky, McGlinn, our selection 6 this year, just our players will be enough to beat the Irish.

Take McGynn out and stick in Dowler and Muston and we have an agreement ;)

Just to name a few benefits of the site, the facility incorporates an MCG-dimension oval (the size of the playing arena having been reduced from its original size), includes a 25 metre heated indoor swimming pool, four refrigerated ice tanks, a gymnasium with a 60 metre running track and a warm-up area with projection and screen facilities to simulate match-day conditions.

Not to mention one of the best gyms in Melbourne.
