View Full Version : Port Adelaide name change imminent

Rumour has it that the continuing gentrification of the once great working class wharf side community Port Adelaide is going to result in the Port Adelaide Football Club being forced to change its name to greater reflect the new residents of the area.

The development group working on the redevelopment of significant parts of the Port Adelaide area would like to change the well known, and highly identifiable name of Port Adelaide to Newport Quays in line with its development.

Included is the proposal to change the name of certain areas central to the football club's community heart including Ethelton and Alberton to Newport Quays.

This would result in the Magpies and Power changing their name in line with these great changes, so that the club is identifiable to the new community that's being formed.

The new middle to upper class movers and shakers, that the Power have been coveting in recent years, are more likely to support a club reflective of the new community - thereby Newport Quays will be the new name.

Bye Bye Black and White bird.

Anyone have any suggestion of new colours and an emblem for the Newport Quays Football Club?

The name Newport Quays Football Club sounds like a Brittish Soccer Club.

BTW there weren't too many threads trolling Port this year. Probably because we were rightly seen as not constituting a threat. Can it be that this thread is an early indication that we are being seen as an emerging force? Given the emergence of Danyle Pearce and his fellow Rising Star nominees it's possible I guess.

This has got nothing to do with Port being a threat next season. Crikey - at this point of the year, I'm not even thinking if the Pies are a threat to win a game next season, let alone the Power. Delusions of grandeur if you think that's what this post is about.
It's just something I heard on the radio.

The upwardly mobile people in Adelaide choose to either move to Port Adelaide or leave the state altogether.

Dont forget that Freo had 7 rising star nonimations in 1995 and we all saw how that turned out.

At the moment besides Pearce the rest at the moment are all hype.

Actually it's a case of the old port adelaide locals losing their trust homes in the long term to allow development of the area to become another parade/jetty Road.

I think Port Rd has so much potiential all they need is to bulldoze most of it and start again.

When the development happens, you can share the upperclass chardonay tag with us.

If I remember correctly Power Beat the Crows in their First Premiership year. (1997) Cause I think Malcolm Blight said "We have to grin and bare it" or something like that.

If I remember correctly it was the kick in the pants that motivated our side to turn the corner and go on and win a flag.

The only point I made was over inflating the value of wins, Adelaide winning a showdown in 2004 didnt mean much to me due to our season.

The Newport Keys?

Maybe then they could all take blow up keys to the game and during the week before a home match they could drag a giant key through the middle of town.

Then the two little brothers of their respective home states could have a couple more things in common :)

I think our wordsmiths are working on the new club song right now...

"We've got the keys to success,
The keys to success,
Come on, Newport combination,
We will unlock, lock lock etc" :D

Why do Port supporters try to count their however many 2nd rate SAFL(no 'N' cause it has never been National) flags. You've won 1 real premiership, so just put 2004!!:D

Your ignorance of what the 'National' referred to in many state leagues around Australia precludes you from any discussion of football history.

Dream on Clown
The VFL was always regarded as the best comp beecause players from all round the country came to play in it and then the name changed to AFL to continue its growth. Get over it and live in the real world.

Yes that's why the greatest player ever to put on a pair of football boots left the VFL and went to play in Western Australia at the peak of his career.

Oh please, it's all been done before. Until the seventies and eighties players went in all directions. Football wasn't the source of a player's livelihood and if they could earn good money elsewhere they went.

Toots, love your contributions to this thread.

Lock, lock, lock....

I'm amazed it took this long to move to Bay 13.

However, while this thread was started in jest, the ramifications of the 'gentrification' of the Port are interesting for Port.

Opens up a whole new world of support, financial and fandom, but it also works against the myth of the working class club that Port is.

I really will look at the future of the Power, and also the Maggies, with much interest.
