Lots of former players buying into Ashes debate regarding on-field/off-field relationships.

Former greats want Ashes edge back

A growing group of former Ashes winners including Allan Border believes the Australian team needs a harder edge during its battles with England this summer. Border, Mark Waugh and Merv Hughes have indicated the on-field relationships with the opposition were too pleasant when Australia lost the urn last year, but Ricky Ponting wants his men smiling during the five-Test series.
"To me the perception was it was a very friendly series, played in fantastic spirit," Border said in The Courier-Mail. "We are not complaining about that, but there was a perception we didn't have an edge to our game that we've had in the past."
Waugh said on Inside Cricket this week the mixing between sides "takes away that little bit of aura you might have out on the field". "It's like when we used to play West Indies - they were pretty scary at one stage," he told the show. "They weren't too friendly out on the field. I'd like to see our blokes not be so friendly out on the field. You can play the game hard and fair."
The strong on-field attitude was cultivated by Border during the 1989 series and retained under Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh, but Hughes has said it was lost in 2005 (http://content-aus.cricinfo.com/ci/content/story/254286.html). However, Ponting said "it was on for young and old" throughout the series.
"We play our best when we are hard-nosed and aggressive and that's the way we have to approach it again," he said. "How you get on off the field is all taken away when you get on the field. We have to make sure we keep doing that."
Adam Gilchrist, the current vice-captain, said the claims of the former players were "rubbish". "They don't know what they are talking about in regards to that series because they weren't there, they weren't in amongst it," he said. "I respect their opinions on many things and understand maybe the message they are trying to get across there. But they don't know."

The former players are right, the current players will always defending themselves, but the fact remains that AB, Sulk Hughes and Merv are all right

We used to bully the Poms under AB, Tayler and Steve Waugh, there ain't no ****in' playing around and laughing and joking, those blokes knew what it was like to lose the Ashes and they'd do anything to win it.

Last year's team did not have anywhere near the intensity and the mentality to achieve the same level of passion for the event as AB and Tugga Waugh used to

Agree, and it seemed to be they were much more combative against the Saffers than the poms.

Punter hits back at criticism

Ponting upset

Australia captain Ricky 'Punter' Ponting has denied his team have lost their aggressive edge towards England, despite claims from former greats that an over-friendly atmosphere contributed to last year's Ashes defeat.

Allan Border, Merv Hughes and Mark Waugh are among those who believe a more ruthless attitude is required when the two sides meet again in their upcoming five-Test series, starting in Brisbane on November 23.
"To me the perception was it was a very friendly series, played in fantastic spirit," Border told The Daily Telegraph.
"We are not complaining about that but there was a perception we didn't have an edge to our game that we've had in the past.
Hughes added: "We lost the attitude towards the English that we once had, the attitude that was introduced by Allan Border."
But Ponting, who is currently leading Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy in India, dismissed suggestions his side had lost its edge, describing the 2005 Ashes as one of the fiercest of his career.
"It was on for young and old all the way through," Ponting said.
"We play our best when we are hard-nosed and aggressive and that's the way we have to approach it again.
"How you get on off the field is all taken away when you get on the field. We have to make sure we keep doing that."
Much of the criticism has been levelled at Shane Warne and Kevin Pietersen, who are county team-mates at Hampshire and exchanged jokes throughout the series.
But Australia's vice-captain Adam Gilchrist dismissed claims the teams were overly friendly as "rubbish".
"They don't know what they are talking about in regards to that series because they weren't there, they weren't in amongst it," he said.
"I respect their opinions on many things and understand maybe the message they are trying to get across there but they don't know."

Oh what a load of steaming horse****

How about when Lee bounced Flintoff and then smiled at him or Hayden saying well bowled when getting bounced by Flintoff and all that ****? One of the more disgraceful moments was Michael Clarke laughing and joking with the Poms and saying "Is this midnight" on the 5th Test when we had to bat under dimming light, it was soft

On for young and old my ass

And good to see Gilchrist going for the typical "But you weren't in the team so you wouldn't know ****" route. Obviously he's never heard of that fact that being in the team can also cloud your judgement just as much. Obviously their senseless defence of their own "friendliness" towards the Poms show that
