I sat back last night and watched a great player seemingly cruise to 204 off 213 balls.
It was so effortless and so graceful.
Poetry in motion.
Well done Gilly.
You champ!
And lets no forget a great support role from Marto.
And, oh yeah, Bad luck Gilly, you almost hit the Gold Sign!

I was listening to it, and it just sounded so easy.
Great Innings you champ!
Also, great to se another Western Warrior join in in Marto:D

It was fantastic to sit back last night and watch Adam Gilchrist's wonderful innings on the Foxtel. It was such a joy to watch I rang my brother and invited him around and had a few beers and enjoyed the Adam Gilchrist show!!
You little beauty Adam.... 204 not out :):)
Well done as well to Damien Martyn and also Shane Warne (Victorian) who had the best strike rate with 12 off 8 balls!! :D:D:D

Brilliant. Simply brilliant. Nothing else needs to be said. 20 years time and that will be talked of in the same light as Lara's 277, Taylor's 334 and Laxmans 274. Let's crush them by an innings!

Gilly is a bloody champion and Marto did well to stay there with him....
is there anything this man can not do??
His innings with Langer against Pakistan 2-3 years ago was fantastic, the way he carves up bowlers...the other partnership with McGrath where it was a partnership of 67 with McGrath contributing one run.....
Gilly will always be remembered as a batsman first a keeper second....

errr...BE CONSISTENT???? Did you even watch him in all the games in Australia? Warney would of had a better average.
1 great innings every 2-3 years isn't what Australia wants.

What are you talking about it hasn't been that long since his last 100 he got one against the kiwis didn't he?
You can't expect a man coming in at 7 to smash a 100 every time he goes out there.

Nathan, you goose. That innings was pretty awesome, although to be fair, both guys did have the better of the luck. Gilchrist is one of the cleanest strikers of the ball I have ever seen. Great to watch. The look on his face when he just missed his million rand (£3.50?) was a classic. Even got a wry grin out of Mark Boucher, who probably wasnt in one of his song and dance man moods by that stage.

i reckon that was the best test innings i've ever seen in 40 years of watching test cricket. He was punsihing, and the South African's had absoutely no answer.
8 sixes !!! :o:o:o thats absolutely unheard of
But you have to feel for Makhaya Ntini, he didn't bowl nearly like he's figures suggested.

Well said, WCE. Ntini was bloody unlucky a few times, deserved a couple more. Geez, without Pollock, Donald and Hayward, they are a very undermanned attack, aren't they.

Nathan - Gilly averages over 57 in test cricket at unbelievable strike rate & you reckon he is not consistent enough - U idiot, U have no idea. He is a proven matchwinner & is a major reason why the Aussies have been so dominant.
Interesting analysis of Gilchrist's innings:
1st 50 - 89 balls
2nd 50 - 32 balls!
3rd 50 - 61 balls
4th 50 - 30 balls!
Also, the brilliant acceleration of the partnership with Martyn, whose innings should not be understimated (his 2nd 50 came off only 37 balls):
1st 50 - 98 balls
2nd 50 - 92 balls
3rd 50 - 34 balls!
4th 50 - 51 balls
5th 50 - 54 balls
6th 50 - 36 balls!

a great knock no doubt.
some saying the fastest 200 ever, however I read that it took him 290 minutes and that Bradman scored one in 210....although there is no record of how many balls Bradman faced it is sure to be less than Gilly given the time difference.
Not taking anything away from Gilly but imagine 200 in 210 minutes....that is starting at the start of play and 200 half an hour before tea
Scoring 100 in a session is fast, but 200 in less than 2 sessions is unbelievable....would have been great to see.
I suspect I would have also enjoyed it more as Bradman was all class. Gilly is great but not as majestic as I imagine Bradman would have been

Let's not forget Matt Hayden's century which set the whole innings up. He copped a lot harder bowling, as the Proteas were not yet demoralised.

Smashing (sorry the pun) innings by Gilchrist. Listening to the test on radio sounded as if Gilchrist was seeing the ball better than ever. The good thing about this test is that everyone contributed, all the batters got runs (especially Martyn and Hayden) plus the bowlers (Oh Ah Glen McGrath and Warnie) were on song.
Bring on the 2nd Test!

Good to see they listened to me! If we are like this against South Africa - how will we go in Zimbabwe next month?

Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but isn't this the same situation we were in in India last year, won the first Test by an innings, then proceeded to get rolled in the next 2? I don't think we'll get caught out like that twice, but you can never predict an outcome for certain.
