The Swannies are on the downward slide now. Everitt is like poison and brings nothing but misery to the clubs he's involved with.

As a matter of interest, how many players have changed clubs to taste premiership success only to be denied?

Buckley

It wouldn't surprise me to see Sydney slide down the ladder a bit, but then again thats what I said last year, and the year before. They are the best team in the competition, the only problem would be if Barry Hall has a shocker next year (he is getting on a bit). They have been extremely good at managing injuries (or lucky, whatever you want to call it), and it would be interesting to see how they wouyld handle having the injury lists of some other teams in the competition. Spida will be average but not brilliant.

They'll finish 3rd-5th IMO.

They aren't the best team in the comp when you recall that the season runs for 22-25 matches.

Truly great sides finish either 1 or 2 and go on to win the flag, something the Swans haven't done.

Being both minor and major premiers in a season isn't accorded enough respect IMO.

Buckley, Colbert, and in a few years you can add Tarrant & Everitt!!

Truly great sides defy the odds, which is what the Swans have done. Making the GF from 4th is a pretty good effort.

No, it means you've saved yourself for the second half of the season exactly as you did this year.

Swans are the best ordinary team to win a flag.

I rather win an 'ordinary' flag than none at all!

Sounds like something Paul Roos would want you to say.

How much respect did you have for Adelaide and Sydney in 2005? My guess would be very little.

Swans are the best ordinary team to win a flag.

And according to some the Saints have the best list on "paper" never to win a flag.

And that best ordinary team made the GF twice in a row. How very, very ,very ordinary were the rest of the teams including the best team on "paper".

FFS, you don't win a premiership and be a sh it side.

Doesn't happen.

Swans made two GF's in a row ... therefore they are better than every other side bar the Eagles over the last two seasons.

Not the right time of year to be eating grapes at the moment. Wait a couple of months and maybe they won't taste so sour :rolleyes:

Adelaide finished first but choked.
Sydney won the flag but finished 3rd.

What's your point?

Sydney do have a few players integral to their side that you would think are starting to get on in football years. While I am not writing them off just yet, they can still be competitive and finish in the top 6, but there are many factors that go into winning a flag. It will be interesting to see how they go next year. They are a good team I agree, but they also have stars. Hall worries me because he can be shut down. Scarlett does it everytime he plays him. So most decent FB's can do it. Hall's game greatly contributed to their loss in the GF.

Winning the flag and being the best team for the year aren't the same thing.

But you don't win a flag without being a great team, and being the best team at the right time.

The "best" teams over the past two season have been West Coast and Adelaide. The best at the right time have been Sydney and West Coast.

I'm sure that people will choose to misinterpret the above (and I'm sure it's not as clear as what I'm trying to say) so I'll just add here that I think Sydney are a great team.

let me throw this into the mix. Sydney dont play for minor premiership success so much as they play and set themselves for GF success via a top 4 possie. Finishing anywhere in the top 4 is the same, theres no advantage to finishing 1st, but there probably should be IMO.

I agree, finishing top 4 is all you need to do. But you still have to be one of the best clubs for the year to do that, even if you don't finish on top. The interstate teams have a tremendous home ground advantage which better enables them to finish top 2

Well they certainly like to cut it fine!

Sydney were only percentage away from finishing sixth. Only one win and percentage from finishing eighth!

Luckily for them they got to play teams from the bottom eight 14 times this year or it might not have worked out so nicely for them.

Sydney the salary cap premiers of 05 :D

And lets not forget they got to the grand final in 96 solely because they were gifted Lockett, Roos, and Maxfield.

Sydney - dont respect them at all, much the same as Brisbane - if it wasn't for the help from the AFL they would still be down the bottom of the ladder where they belong.

Teams finish top two because they are the best teams going around that year, not because of home ground advantage!

West Coast only lost 5 games in the H&A season, three of those loses were at Subi, one at AAMI and one at the TD.

Adelaide only lost 6 games three at home, three away.

crap teams dont make it to grand finals, let alone win them. sydney are a great team with some grossly underrated players. everitt might give them one last tilt at the flag next year. they might do it too. anyone who says sydney were gifted their flags by salary cap concessions is a tool. every team who wins a flag won it because of <insert rubbish reason here>. i bet sydney do the right things, at the right time next year again. the competitions pinnacle is the flag, not the minor premiership. the swans play it smart and they peak at the right time. good luck to them.

People have written off the Swans before only to be surprised. While they might slip a little next year I think they will still be competitive.
