Raines Gaspar P Bowden
J Bowden Polak Thursfield
Not a bad little set up that. Throw in hartigan to release raines in the middle occasional and possibly kelvin moore.

Perfect. :thumbsu:
Polak has to play CHB, not FB, because he is a CHB first and foremost.
I like Thursfield more at FB with Polak a better choice at CHB than Will ATM.
Bowden should be played alongside Polak to give us some run, ditto Raines, which would give us great run from the backline.
Bowden as the third tall would play a bit deeper, alongside Newman who while holds a player deep, doesn't give us that run that Bowden and Raines does.

Newman, Gaspar, Thursfield
Johnson, Polak, J.Bowden
Pat Bowden on the bench. Throw in Jason Cloke instead of Johnson(instead put up on the wing) if we pick him up in the draft.

good call
I remember a game last year were the Tigers won a close one against the eventual premiers Sydney. On that day a quite achiever (noticed by myself, I was very impressed just quietly) by the name of Ray Hall who played a tagging role on this years Brownlow winner Goodes. Goodes hardly had a touch (bit like the old missus going down) that day.
I also remember a few games this year when young Razor was forced to play as a FB but got creamed. Just because you are tall doesn't mean you are a key position player, there is however a place for R. Hall in the team. More so now that the over sized utilty is becoming a big part of modern footy.
Get him fit, he has a good defensive mind and can wear a player like a glove, just don't put him in the goal square against a gorilla forward. He may not be picked every week but a handy one to have on the sidelines when the side comes against an awkward match up come game day.

Gaspar is STIL pathetic.
He aint gonna be magically good next year.
The guys as weak as pis and so r the loose man in the back bowden boys - soft little darters.
We should have kept kellaway over dust boy.

I'm as enthusiastic about Thursfield as any Tiger fan. However, there is no way we can expect him to hold down full back in 2007. Why?
1. He's coming off a knee reco.
2. He's only 76kg, with chicken legs. How the hell could he compete with Bradshaw, Hall, Gehrig, Fevola and Lloyd in one on one battles of strength?
3. He's played 7 AFL games. By the start of next season he'll have played 1 match in nearly 18 months.
Like it or not, we need Gaspar desperately in 2007. We need him to play 18 games plus, and we need him to play on the monster forwards. We need him to nullify, to spoil, to scrag and to wrestle and contain. I would almost go so far as to say that he could be the most important player for us in 2007. If Gas stands up, Polak drops in comfortably and the Bowden brothers share the load of 3rd tall, our backline may well be okay. And we can afford to give Thursfield a full and comprehensive recovery.

Surley we would rather Pat Bowden playing the 3rd/4th tall or 'loose man in defense' role rather than some hack from collingwood.

Oxx, have another drink my man. Or smoke or whatever it is your on, because you just aren't getting it. Who do you want to play in the back line if Gas and the Bowdens aren't there? Did you see us against Sydney at the Dome this year?

Oxx, get fair dinkum son. We need someone to play on the gorillas. Whether you believe it or not, gaspar rarely gets beaten one on one and hasnt had bags kicked against him. Remember gehrig kicking 10 on us this year? Who played on him please tell us.

Dont kid yourself about our backline... its doesnt compare to the Sydneys, Weagles and Crows.

Fraser would have kicked 10 on Gaspar for sure that day, going by his form.

P. Bowden is too unaccountable. We cant have every backman playing a lose man role, and have you seen him try and hold a forward? Doesnt happen. Play Ray Hall down back, not the greatest defender in the world but a handy back pocket, especially when our midfield isnt being slaughtered. I still say play Patrick on the wing, that way if he has to he can still float, but he can float all over the ground.
Not long left in Gaspar im afraid, but Thursfield looks the goods to step up once Gas is gone.
Stop living in the past. Gaspar's best days are well and truly behind him.
We have a long tradition of overrating our KP defenders.
Gaspar = Gary Frangalas and even has the same mullet head
bull****
even though i think the gas is a prune he held neitz and hall to nothing while hall got murdered by gehrig, franklin etc
lol at people on punt road end thinking hall can play a "roaming" role funniest thing ive heard in my life hahaha
he is useless with the ball and is a **** defender also:thumbsd:

Gehrig was having a good day but in my opinion Gaspar -> Hall any time. Hall seriously has NFI when it comes to containing a forward. As soon as I see him line up on any forward I cringe. He's only position is playing as a third tall or possibly as a winger because of his athleticism and height. We need Gaspar to stand up big time for our defence to work this year.
And J and P Bowden being soft darters frankly isn't a problem with me. They're technically not backman but as much as I hate to use the term QBs of the modern day football. They create off half back and this is where they are most effective. They both had their best years EVER in these positions.

Seriously doubtful.
Patty Bowden could hardly be considered a backman. He's basically a half forward playing loose across half back. He did a great job with this role last year, being the link man across half back and through the middle. He was basically the loose man in defence for the entire season. He did it superbly, but we can't rely on him having a man as part of the back six. He isn't a defender.
He'll continue to play as the loose man, and if he gets manned up, it's normally a defensive type of player sent down to negate him. That's when he pushes forward to more attacking positions, so he isn't exploited close to goal. Really good year and glad to see the B's linking up down there but he won't be used in the back six as a stand alone defender.

All of a sudden quiet alot of tigerheads have lost the sense of reality.
Must be newbies that havent learnt quite yet, that looking the goods in october and delivering the goods when the reality stuff starts, doesnt really appear to much on the Tigers form guide. ;)
Can you please stopping using the term tigerheads. Its the stupidest definition of a Richmond supporter I've ever heard.

Jason Cloke was good unil everyone realised all they needed to do was run his opponent off him and have an extra player on the ground.
Andrew Kellaway has better hope of being picked up in the PSD by a club than J Cloke I would have thought.

I think the only use for Ray Hall is as the kick behind the play ruckman/utility. Benny Gale sometimes played that role late in his career and did well at it.
Hall is no good man on man as a defender and has been tried and failed as a key forward (remember his huge run ups from set shots?).
With that in mind I expect to see him play maybe 10 games next year, depending on which team we are playing against.
I would ease Thursfield and Newman back into the team. Think of them as a bonus rather than integral to our defence. At least for the first half of the year.

Thursfield should be physically right to go by now, let alone the start of next season! If hes not fit to play round 1 you'd have to be a little bit worried...would be a bad sign regarding his ability to recover from injuries.

That's a good point. He's already had 6 months out and by the time the pre-season matches start he will be at 10 months recovery. He should be ready for round one with the rest of them.

Dont kid yourself about our backline... its doesnt compare to the Sydneys, Weagles and Crows.
And one of the best players there are Rutten who was a rookie elevation and Leo Barry who was a local Sydney player. Great defences aren't necessarily created with high draft choices.
Oh, and having a dominant midfield also does wonders for the defense!
