From today's Geelong Addy. Good read on Enright, a player who, in my opinion, seems to epitomize the youth movement at Kardinia Park and the potential that the balance of the young players under Bomber Thompson's guidance represent.
Comments or reaction?

I am from Geelong myself, and I have to say the Advertiser writes a whole lot of rubbish when it comes to Geelong. Sure, it's a Geelong paper, but c'mon already!! You win one pre-season cup match and the paper goes totally overboard.
What they write does not do the team and it's supporters any good at all. They are part of the problem.

They're a Geelong paper, a sponsor of the club, what are they meant to write?

Stuff that doesn't go right over the top. Sure, if they beat a top club in the AFL season then sure, they can write all about it. They win one pre-season cup match and away they go. It's just stupid.

ok.. I feel as I have to jump in and defend my husband here (you_idiot) :)
I have been supporting this "team" for over 25 years now, and yes I know we have been so close only to lose, however, that being said I don't think the Advertiser goes overboard.... I think what it is trying to do is to try to get the population of Geelong to get behind and support their team, which is something that is sadly lacking in Geelong.
This team has its share of problems but I think if it can pull together as a team we can see a premiership this year. But as far as the paper goes, it is a local paper and of course it is going to give the local team a good write up -- it is only natural. I don't think they go overboard, they are just trying to encourage and build up the spirits of both the supporters and the players.
JMHO of course. :)
Keep smiling
Jennifer

Don't get me wrong, I was not having a go at your jusband at all, I was getting stuck into the paper. However, you bring up some VERY questionable points....
To say that Geelong are this years premiers in the making is going a little bit too far. I am one eyed Melbourne, but I can't honestly seeing us win the premiership this year. Finals for the Cats maybe, but how the hell do they think they can beat Ess, Brissie, Hawthorn etc. Not possible.
And the Addy goes overboard. sure, encouraging is good, but sooner or later people will get sick of the crap they make up. Like there win in round one of the pre-season cup. They were building up how good the midfield was, when most of them had 10 possies and under. It's stuff like that that makes me grimace. It's just crap.
But anyway, I was just bringing up the point.

Did they actually say that we were going to be premiers this year?
No.

No, the paper didn't. Catgirl2002 did.
And that is who I was talking too.

My apologies, I thought you were talking about the Addy.
I can't see a premiership for a couple of years. I'd like to make the finals this year and I would be happy with that.
To say we can win a flag this year with our inexperienced list is extremely optimistic.

Apology accepted.....and I agree with your statement.
You guys can make the finals with some hard work, much like ourselves, and a premiership is somehting you can onl ywish for this year. I think finals would be a good objective.

OK, this is not-- I repeat, is not a thread critiquing the coverage and policies of the Geelong Advertiser. This was meant to be a thread about an article within the pages of that newspaper about.......... ummmm, I forget. And I'm the one who started this thread. :(
But as long as we are off-topic, let me have the last word on the matter by saying that it seems to me that the Addy practices the same forms of the tenets of journalism as the other papers in this country do. The exeception (and I use this word loosely) is that they represent a one-team city-- and therefore should be excused if they have a longer leash on the Cats, versus the Herald-Sun or The Age, who have to cover several different AFL teams, including but not limited to the Cats, within the coverage area of their respective readerships. The Addy is a different paper than the others, and their coverage is reflected accordingly.
I should have prefaced the above comments by saying that as I professional journalist myself, as I make my wages from being a sportswriter, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on the topic. :)
Now back to your regularly-scheduled topic of this thread... :D
Cheers,
William
The HUN & The AGED hardly have any stories on Geelong .
If Cowboy doesn't like the fact that the ADDY does a lot of Geelong stories, then don't read the ADDY.
The HUN & AGED have plenty of stories on the MFC .Last year they had stories everyday on Joe G.

Points well-taken, although as the Herald-Sun and The Age cover the AFL at large, they do carry some Geelong stories and features at some point or another. Just not as often as the Addy does, which is understandable.
Seeing that this thread has remained off-topic, I have created a critique thread of the Addy (and a related poll) on this thread here: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27871
Can we talk about the players of topic, please? :D
Cheers,
William
I think Enright will prove that Murphy won't be a lose.Hopefully Joel Corey can take over from Buddha & one of the new recruits [Kelly,Ablett or Bartels] can fill in for Spriggs.

Joel Corey won't be a Hocking type player if thats what you mean.
Corey Enright has determination on his side, he's played against men in SA country sides since he was 14, and he looks like he's got the goods. He'll be a solid midfielder in years to come, and being a small town boy, is unlikely to seriously look at moving to another club, including Port, unless you treat him badly.

Apparently, the Addy isn't the only one who thinks highly to publicize Enright.
