Talk about a baffling move. He must really dread the thought of finals.

Did we trade or delist Cain?

Yeah, leaves Port (or did we delist him?) after we won the flag, and now he leaves St. Kilda, a team who is consistently in the finals.

Delisted and then St Kilda drafted him - #33 2004 ND.

His career is really taking off then. :thumbsu:
Booted out by us now he's got himself to the point of being able to walk out of St Kilda.
He must not fancy his chances with Gardiner, Brooks and Rix as competition.
So the Saints gain nothing from this by the looks. Would be annoying if they got something for him when we couldn't.

Ackland en route to Blues
6:16:15 PM Thu 26 October, 2006
Paul Gough
The new Ross Lyon era at St Kilda has received its first major setback with ruckman Cain Ackland walking out on the Saints to accept a three year deal with this year's wooden spooners Carlton.
The Blues have decided the 24-year-old, who began his career with Port Adelaide, is the man to replace the retired Barnaby French and will use their first pick at the December 12 NAB AFL pre-season draft to secure him.
Ackland managed just 12 games in four years at Port Adelaide as he struggled for a regular game due to injury and the Power's glut of ruckman at that time but he has played 41 games in the past two years for the Saints.
However he was dropped for this year's elimination final loss to Melbourne but Saints' chief executive Archie Fraser told Sportal on Thursday that Lyon had told Ackland he would be a major part of the club's plans for 2007.
"Ross did a good job in trying to convince Cain to stay," Fraser said.
"Ross told Cain he was a big part of our plans for 2007 and there would be plenty of opportunities for him and the chance to play finals football."
"All I can say is we are surprised and disappointed at his decision."
Fraser said the Saints had made a "solid" offer to Ackland, who was out of contract, and had been given no indication as to why he decided to leave this year's finalists for a club that finished on the bottom of the ladder.
"This has basically come out of the blue over the last three days," he said.
"We haven't spoken to Cain as he is on holidays but we were told by his manager (that Ackland was moving to Carlton) and obviously they offered him more."
Fraser however insisted that the loss of Ackland would not leave the Saints short of ruckmen.
"We still have Kosi and of course (boom recruit) Michael Gardiner (from West Coast) as well as Barry Brooks, Michael Rix and Jason Blake."
The Blues are delighted at snaring Ackland, who also fits in with the club's stated recruiting philosophy of only securing players aged 24 or under.
"We are delighted that Cain has agreed to join the Carlton Football Club and subject to all the AFL approvals he will officially become a Carlton player following the pre-season draft in December," Carlton football operations manager Grant Williams said on Thursday.
"At 24 years of age Cain has a lot of football in front of him and we look forward to him being a part of the Carlton team for many years to come."
Carlton coach Denis Pagan was delighted the Blues had landed themselves an experienced AFL ruckman.
"His decision to join Carlton is a real boost to the club particularly following the retirement of Barnaby French at the end of the season,” Pagan said.
"There is no doubt we needed a proven ruckman and in Cain we have secured a young ruckman who has already established himself at AFL level."
Ackland said he is looking forward to playing a key role in reviving the Blues' on-field fortunes.
"I am excited to be joining the Carlton Football Club and believe it will provide me with a greater playing opportunity," he said.
"It was a difficult decision to leave St Kilda but Carlton has a very young playing list and will be adding some more exciting young talent in the upcoming national draft so I am looking forward to working together with the young players to build a successful future for the club."

"...Ackland managed just 12 games in four years at Port Adelaide as he struggled for a regular game due to injury and the Power's glut of ruckman at that time..."
12 games? I don't remember a single one. Really, did he play 12?
Apart from that 'a glut of ruckmen'? What a load of rubbish! Primus injured, Lade injured, French to Carlton. If not for the crap attitude (which had even the patient Allen Stewart having a go at him) Ackland could have carved out a career twice over. Broges appeared from nowhere and saved our bacon thankfully.
What bizarre recruiting assessment has Carlton interested in him. Maybe they tried for Barry Brooks first?

He's averaging just over 10 hit outs per game. Even Barnaby was doing better than that.

At 196cm though he can't really be expected to win too many of the taps, better to be used either as a tall forward option (he is not too bad on the lead) or just as a plug in front of the likes of a Barry Hall.

Funny stuff that theyve offered him a pretty decent 3 year contract. Apparently worth at least 250k a year.
Ackland and Mclaren...a ruck combo which will put fear into the minds of opposition clubs. Thats got to be the most uninspired ruck combo of all time.

Another opportunity for Carlton. A certain player whose initials are PK has been delisted. The information is contained within this story (http://www.sportal.com.au/football.asp?i=news&id=90260).
BTW for those who are new to this Board never refer to PK by name or you call down an unending 'dialogue' with a very keen personal fan of his who seems to have an uncanny ability to find references to him anywhere in BF.

I think Paul Koulouriotis would fit in rather nicely at Carlton. :p

Not many of our delisted/traded players have done well at other clubs have they?
Carlton is looking more like a train wreck than a crash repairer.

Scott Cummings for one season
Nathan Eagleton has had his moments
Josh Carr naturally
Nick Stevens is better than most Blues
Byron Pickett has also had some good moments
Tom Harley has been the best of them
