View Full Version : My "ideal" draft outcome for PAFC

I've had a think about what i believe would be an ideal draft from our perspective. I dont mean Gibbs being available at 5, then Hansen or Gumbleton at 23, i'm being realistic.

Our first pick - I'm hoping we get Thorp, who can be used in a key position either in defence or attack. He would shore up our big men stocks, and provide support to Tredders, C Cornes Chaplin, Carlile, Willits and White. I think Sellar would be too much of a risk, whilst i think Selwood (if available) would be great, but with our existing midfield stocks, we really need to concentrate on a KPP pick with our first pick.

Pick 2 - Edwards from North Adelaide would be great, i've heard he has exquisite skills possibly reminiscent of the Jarman brothers. Edwards' stocks have risen considerably in the last few weeks but there would be some chance he'd be available with our second pick.

Pick 3 - in my "ideal" draft list, we'd take Hurley from Sturt with our 3rd pick. His disposal needs a bit of work but he certainly knows how to find the ball.

Pick 4 - Hier, the young full back from the WWT Eagles would be an ideal 4th pick in my opinion. Hes impressed with the Eagles this year, and could be equally capable as Carlile as establishing himself in the last line of defence within the next 2 to 3 years in our AFL side. I have a sneaking suspicion though that the Crows may try to get him with one of their picks, thereby enabling Rutten to move away from Full Back.

1 Thorp
2 Edwards
3 Hurley
4 Hier

I've gone for 3 South Aussies for 2 reasons, 1, i know most about them, and 2, they remove the "go home" factor. The 4th player Thorp is from Tasmania, so there wouldn't be an issue for him to move home to player either.

Mine would be:

1. Scott Gumbleton: Believe it or not I've tried to match a player to every bottom four club and Gumbleton was left out.

Carlton: Gibbs (Obvious no.1)
Essendon: Leuenburger (Essendon need ruckman)
Kangaroos: Hansen (Kangaroo need flexible KPP)
Lions: Selwood (Brother of Troy)

My selection is almost self explainatory. We keed strong key forward and we have got one here.

National Draft:

2. Nathan Djerrkura (Small Crumbling forward)
3. Tom Hurley (Midfielder)
4. Alwin Davey (Running Defender)
5. Matt Campbell (Small Forward)

PSD:

1. Jeremy Clayton (Midfielder)
2. Tim Looby (Bulky Defender whom should never have been de-listed)

I don't know the players well enough to predict names in spots, but I'd like to see us take the best available KPP with #5, or if we go for Leuenberger, then the next best KPP at #23 (unless a genuinely good, strong bodied midfielder has slipped - like Hislop). Assuming 5 picks, overall I'd like to see 3 KPPs (or 2 and 1 ruckman in Leuenberger's case), a strong bodied crash midfielder (Bentley/Thomas size) and maybe the opportunist forward Davey type, or the scrawny wingman like Edwards (needs to put on some serious muscle, but I like the way he plays - another missed father/son opportunity via Centrals). Depends who slips tho and that could all be thrown out of whack.

Not interested in Hurley, and judging by no DC invitation, I'm not the only one. I wouldn't draft Campbell and Davey (one, not both). I like Sam Jacobs, but I don't think we need more developing ruckmen (Leuey aside). Mind you, if they show anything, they have trade value down the track.

We can sort through the leftovers in the PSD.

Its interesting about Hurley. Not sure what hes done wrong. His disposal needs a lot of work but not many players around have that sort of ball winning ability. State captain and had big numbers at the Champs. Had big numbers at Sturt all year. I thnk he'd be unlucky not to get drafted somewhere.

Id like to see:
1 - Best player available. Whoever that is.
2 - N Brown/Hislop/Petterd/Edwards
3 - Grigg/Buckley
4 - Hurley/McIntyre
5 - Davey/Hier.

I reckon we should take Leuenberger with our first pick if he’s there. If not go for a midfielder in Selwood unless Gumbleton, Gibbs or Hansen are somehow available.

Mitchell Brown should be an automatic with our second pick (Pick 23). He’s tough, big and strong. Just for anyone who hasn’t seen him play, today Weaver in his yearly Mock draft compared him to Cameron Mooney ;) .

Third round, we should get Hurley. As much as people don’t rate him, he will become a very good footballer. He tearing it up in the SANFL this year and he had a very good under 18’s championships. He is small, but so is Pearce. He doesn’t have electric pace but neither did Roger James. I think we could develop him into a Roger James type player.

With our last pick I’d love to get Joe Anderson. He’s from NT. He’s tough, loves a scrap, finds the footy and is a inside midfielder or a Backman.
