View Full Version : Mitch Morton in 2007

For whatever reason Morton hasn't really done much since he was taken in the 2004 draft, when he was rated by many as a potential top 10 pick.
In 2 years with us he's only played 4 games and I'm beginning to worry a little about his development. Perhaps injuries and the strength of our squad are to blame, but still, I can't help but feel he's been over taken by Rosa and LeCras, who both had far lesser CVs pre-draft.
Anyway, I thought I'd start a prediction/expectations thread of sorts for Morton, which I'll bookmark and bump back up later.
My expectations are that he'll play 7 or 8 games and average about 12-15 disposals. Assuming he's played on a forward flank, a little less than a goal a game wouldn't be too much to ask IMO.
What does everyone else think?

Seen alot of Morton in the WAFL. The way I see it there is no happy medium for Mitch. Hes either spectacular or crap. Theres nothing in the middle. In saying that this means I think he will either play 22 games or 2.
I still remember last year versus East Perth I think he was on the boundary line and instead of kicking with the right foot he decided off the mark he would have a crack with the left and it just touched the post. Shows just how skilled he is he trusted his left so much
Why cant we pick up mitchs younger brother under father son this year ?

Why cant we pick up mitchs younger brother under father son this year ?
They changed the rules
Rules stated that a player had to have played his 150th game in 1987(comeone may need to correct me here) under the previous rules when we drafted Mitch
This was changed this year to be 150th game in 1986(again may need correcting)
Mitch's dad played his 150th game in 1987 so we miss out on his younger brothers as a result
Its the same reason Adealide are spitting chips because they were all set to get Bryce Gibbs under father-son until they changed the rules

You have to remember that Morton is still only 19 yo
From memory he didn't have a good run with injuries early in the season so his fitness may have been questionable. He seemed to be playing more as a deep forward making it hard to have a big impact on games and gain the consistency required to play at AFL level.
Hopefully he will play more in the midfield next year at WAFL level early so he can push towards a spot in the top 22 next year. And given that he was touted as a top 10 draft pick a few years ago hopefully this will be the case
Mind you he has some stiff competition from the the likes of Rosa, Hurn, Priddis and Armstrong to name a few
which is a good thing :thumbsu:

even thought to be as high as a top 5 pick (same with hurn, another steal) - with that comes a bit of pressure on the kid too, plus his father's name to live up to - the eagles have been patient, they know its just a matter of time maturing in to afl footy...
i know the topic has been talked about recently, but he is another candidate for a future leadersdhip role down the track - still got a good 10 more years out of this kid - dont be surprised if he isnt up there for consideration in a few years - still a while away from any of that yet though of course
upside on this guy = massive - already has the skills - and the maturity (physical / mental), size, stamina, fitness, form, etc are all on his side becaue of his young age - he has time to build on those things
in short, he is a potential star - have faith jimmy!

We wouldn't have got him anyway. We were lucky to get Mitch as his dad's game count included pre-season games, which no one at the AFL thought to check until recently....
