View Full Version : Bulldogs should pick western jets players
Why wouldnt the western bulldogs pick up exciting props from the western jets. There are some stars such as bachar houli, lockwood and prysmall. Comon doggies keep the western talents in town

We need the best talent in Australia, not in the Western suburbs. It would be great to find another Smithy, or Johnno, but at the risk of missing a talented inter stater, its not worth it.

Agreed - you can't be sentimental when trying to win a flag. From what I'm aware, none of those is 190cm or taller, which is a little closer to requirements than hard-at-it midfielders.

It goes without saying that the best should be chosen as a priority. However when it gets to later picks, where the emphasis is on potential and future development, another quality comes into play, trainability. At that stage, all things being equal, there's nothing wrong with choosing a local in preference to an interstater.

The only time I would go the local player if it was a 50/50 decision between an interstater i'd go the local

You should get Marty Pask.He was delisted by the Lions. Is now training in Brisbane with Aka.A big KPP, young player.
I have seen him play.I liked him a lot, was shocked he was delisted.IMO he wasn't given a fair crack on the list, or games.

I'd heard some good things about Marty Pask. Is he still under the age for rookie listing Campbell?

Now we have the funding for a few rookies, if the best Jets player isn't taken in the draft we should rookie list that player each season. We should be working with the Jets and assist in developing the boys in our area.

I wasn't going to comment on this but you raise an interesting point - and certainly one that the interstate clubs try to follow....pick rookies from a local pool.
Nice theory...but the Jets have an alignment with a VFL side - Williamstown - who have an alignment with an AFL side other than the Bulldogs (Collingwood). I think there is some merit here in developing a local elite level support program through the VFL for Jets players, but as the Dogs would want this to be through Werribee and the Jets offices/home ground etc etc are shared with Willi, this is simply not going to work.
But to say that players such as Cameron Lockwood and Nathan Lyons, who in times gone by would have worked their way into senior footy via u19's/Reserves but will now (more than likely) be denied this opportunity by the AFL system are being let down is probably not understating it.
I guess the other way to look at it is to see what Collingwood have done - they have just elevated three rookies (Cox - who did a preseason with the Bulldogs, O'Brien and Toovey) all of whom are from Perth. There is something to say for just finding the best players you can, no matter where they are from, and getting them to the club.
