View Full Version : Will Warnock be even better than Sandilands?

From the little I have seen of young Robbie in the WAFL, he is more developed skillwise as a ruckman than Sandi was at the same age. Also, he seems to be having a bigger impact on the WAFL comp than the young Sandi did.

Will he be a better player than Sandi in the future?

I have been following hima all year because I am a WP fan. He is definitley better than Sandilands, his skills are absolutley amazing for someone of his size. He is quicker than Sandilands, can pick the ball up off the ground and has a MUCH kick than Sandilands. He is just alot more skillful. The only thing Sandilands has over Warnock is an extra 6cm in height.

Warnock will be better.

Not pouring cold water here, but surely Sandi is heavier than Warnock by some margin. That would account for his lack of agility.

It will be fantastic to have both of them up and running :thumbsu:

He looked good for west Perth this year but a lot depends on Warnock's ability to put on weight. Apparently the lunch ladies at the club give him a hard time because he is such a big eater. That is a bit of a worry, that he is eating so much but not gaining weight. Hopefully it is because he is still growing, and he can add around 10kg in the next year.

His wafl form was far beyond expectations though, and he looks to be a real prospect down the track.

Apparently he's added about 10kg since he arrived - he's only about 30kg shy of sandi now.

He may be more skilful and agile than Sandi - but if he's a scrawn-ball who gets pushed around too much he may not be "as good" as Sandman overall.

haven't heard anything of him. I hate canberra :(

we need a back up for sandi so hopefully the kid gets a run late in the year.

Because of his lack of muscle most people expected him to play wafl reserves this year, but he played most of the season for West Perth's senior side and handled himself extremely well against much stronger opponents. Handy around goal too.

I wasn't aware of that. When he hits triple figures he should be ready for selection.

I can recommend a good drench!!

Seriously, when I come to Perth to watch the Dockers( which is nearly every second weekend) I stay close to Joondalup and quite often duck over to the Arena and watch the Cardies if the timing is right.
Believe me, this kid can play. He is big, raw-boned and obviously a late bloomer, and if he can stay injury free whilst developing he will be a very exciting prospect.
As for being as good as Sandi?? Well we can only hope. I reckon 211 will be the dominant ruckman in the AFL next year and bigcox will need therapy for little mans syndrome after being given another thrashing by the great man.
God, I miss my footy.
Bring on 2007!!!

As much as I rate Warnock I think we all need to be patient.
Sandi finished the year rated amongst the best ruckmen in the AFL. Probably only cox the main rival. Next year if he continues his improvement he will be the dominant ruckman. He is athletic, has a good kick, good handball and can pick the ball up off the ground. He could probably use a bit more mongrel as well. His only real weakness is pack marking and one would expect that to improve.
Warnock has all those attributes but not as developed. His body is also not developed. As a guide, at something like 205cm tall he weighed less than Peter Bell. Sort of puts it in perspective.
WAFL is very different from AFL so I wouldn't expect too much too soon. Give him another year at WAFL level then turn him loose with Sandi.:thumbsu:

Agree 100%. I don't think we should expect anything before 2008 at the earliest. He's only 19 - and we seriously shouldn't be pinning any great hopes on him before he's at least 23/24. Sandi is 23 (turning 24 next month) - and remember as recently as last year we were divided on whether or not the great Sandman had what it took to succeed at AFL level. (FWIW I was in the "yes" camp... ;) ).

As long as JLo's knees are okay, then he is an excellent back-up - and there is the possibility that we may take a mature aged rookie ruckman (call it gut-feeling....) as an extra back-up wjile Robbie matures and develops. Hopefully we won't need it - Sandi and JLo are a formidable ruck duo!!

Do you know if a mature age rookie counts as one of our four selections or can we take 4 rookies plus a mature age rookie?

Not 100% sure, but I would think that it would count as one of the rookies. Just my guess.

Quick response!!!

You're probably correct, and if so I think it would be a waste of a pick. I'd prefer to recruit 4 young fellas.

He was pick 42 in 2005, and shows that you can pick up good prospects mid draft, especially if you have patience and good talent identification. He would be worth re-signing early as there seems to be a few clubs prowling for ruckmen.

I'm surprised to see so many right off JLo as both a ruckman and a forward. This puzzles me somewhat. Do you all think the clubs just going to nurse him through his whole career managing his knees?

jlo is an awesome ruckman, I don't know why I lost confidence in him. I remember that game against Melbourne where he managed to win the game for us through his ruckwork although he was still injured.

I apologise wise JLo, please forgive me!

Yep another year at the Munchers to hone his skills and bulk up the muscle.

Send him over to Mrs Sandi's at least once a week for a good home cooked meal. Maybe he can clean the gutters whilst he's there.

Yeah, pretty well. Mind you I've never thought he was much chop as a key forward. He just doesn't have the speed or body strength. I think his highest tally is 36 which makes him handy but average.

But he is a phenomenally talented player. I think he's our leading clearance player when you look at minutes played in the middle. With his knees limiting his fitness regime, they may want to play him off the bench for 40 to 60 minutes a game.

The problem with JLo is that rest seems to be the treatment for his knees, not surgery, so it will almost certainly be an ongoing problem. JLo is still a valuable part of the side, but people are excited about a teenager playing so well in the wafl. One thing that concerns some people about Longmuir is that it looks like he is cruising, when infact he is very determined. He could do with a dose of angry pills though.

Hopefully Justin can get his fitness to a level where we have the option of playing him in the ruck for most of a game incase Sandilands gets injured or we want to play Sandilands forward for an extended period of time. Unfortunately JLo has shown little as a permanent forward, and seems to kick as many goals playing in the ruck as he does when stationed in the goal square.

Loved that tackle JLo layed in the finals. Just flung himself at an oncoming player and caused the turnover. TOPS!

Cameron Bruce it was IIRC. Justin just threw himself at him, Bruce dropped the ball - free kick to JLo! :thumbsu:

What is exactly wrong with his knees?Must have the most takeaways by a ruckman at clearances by far it seems like every second time he grabs it in the ruck.Don't forget the winner against the saints from a tight angle at subi.:thumbsu:
