View Full Version : Favorite MMA Fighters?

Past or present, it doesn’t matter.

I personally have five overall favorites, but I’ll explain the one of most importance to me. The first time I ever saw Vovchanchyn fight was at PRIDE 8 against Francisco Bueno. I saw this fight about two years after it actually took place, mind you. Anyway, I didn’t know what to expect at first, I had heard a lot of things but he didn’t look overly intimidating at first. Not very athletic at all, but this was a reflection of how naïve and young I was back then.

Anyway, both fighters circled the ring for a while without engaging, but you could tell Bueno was intimidated by Vovchanchyn. After over a minute of circling without any contact, Vovchanchyn un-launches five vicious strikes, dropping Bueno like a sack of potatoes to the canvas. He was out cold on the first one that connected.

I sat there in awe for a while but after I had replayed it at least a dozen times, I knew I was in love. Since then, I have made an effort to see all his matches and highlights. In his prime, he was downright ruthless, an amazing fighter. Yet he was incredibly respectful and humble outside of the ring.

I will always credit Vovchanchyn to a large extent for my initial interest in MMA and he will always be my favorite.

My other favorites include Aleksander Emelianenko, Wanderlei Silva, Enson Inoue and Phil Baroni for various reasons which I will explain down the track. Who are yours and why?

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. The guy is great for many reasons, unbelievable on the ground so slick and smooth especially for a heavyweight, transitions are seamless and i love that anaconda choke. I love his arm-triangle on Coleman, its as perfect as it gets.

That and the guys heart, Hes taken some massive beatings and come back from nowhere to win the fight like the Sapp and CroCop fights, the guy has as good of a chin out there except for Hunt/Fujita who are freaks.

Who could forget his celebration after the CroCop fight.

1. Shogun Rua. This guy is pound for pound the best fighter in the world. All the Brazilians sh1t me with their attitude in and out of the ring but this guy is just to good. If Wandy wasn't his training partner at Chute box this kid would have been middle weight champ a long time ago. As it is he'll be the one to beat Fedor when he gets the chance.

2. GSP. This guy is all class. He might get smashed by Huges in the up coming title fight but I'll still respect this mans all round game, heart, attitude and ring side personality forever.

3. Royce Gracie. The guy that got me into BJJ. I remember watching his old fights and hating him. Always thinking he was lucky to win the fight. Then a friend of mine got me into jits. I went because I wanted to see if GracieJJ was what he showed. Now I look back on those old fights and see that everyone he fought never had a chance. In fact where never in the fight.

Fedor - A freak, nuff said. Simply the worlds best fighter.

Royce Gracie - brought BJJ to the masses, probably wouldn't never have started Jiu Jitsu if it wasn't for him. Amazing to see him chop down the most experienced martial artists of the time. Revolutionized the modern fighting game.

Randy Couture - All round nice guy and fantastic fighter to watch.

Cro Cop - Another favourite to watch.

Jean Jaques Machado - Not MMA so to speak, but arguably the greatest grappler of all time, and to do so with one deformed hand is a statement to say how damn good he is.

Others that deserve a mention - GSP, Shogun, Sakuraba

I have a tourni on dvd from Keiv where he fights 3 or 4 guys in one night (just like old school UFC tournies) including Paul "the Polar Bear" Vaerlens. This was my intro to Igor and i too have been hooked since. An absolutely ruthless striker, complete nugget of a man!!!:thumbsu:

Anyone remeber Jon Hess? He had that massive brawl in UFC 5 with Andy Anderson (that's his real name btw). It was so bad it was comical. He's been talking trash ever since. Reckons he is good enough to be world champ. He's a funny man.

Anyone remeber Jon Hess?
It’s funny that Jon Hess has been brought up as I actually watched UFC 5 earlier this morning. I laughed out loud when he said in the promo that he was here to break people, he walks to the ring, has this massive muscle gut, starts swinging for the high heavens and than breaks his hand and bows out of competition.

The funniest thing was that he had the craziest reach advantage too, he was like 6’7 and Anderson was only 5’6. Hess was just raining elbows and punches at Anderson, no direction at all. It was just a bar-room brawl in every sense. I mean, that guy surely had no training at the time and the SAFTA was all BS. I was laughing my guts out when he was eye gouging like a MF, Big John didn't pick up on it at all.

I love going back and watching early UFC events, especially number one and five. Sure, it’s cheesy and unprofessional when compared to today but still very entertaining and it’s a joy to watch Gracie work his ground game. I have always been annoyed by the boos that Gracie/Shamrock received in their bout at five and always will be but I guess back then it was marketed as a fight to the death.

Nether the less, going back to early UFC events is refreshing from time to time.

Yeah I love the old school UFC's even if at times it does resemble a bar fight :D

I would love to get my hands on some of the old UFC's / Prides , they are just hard to find and time consuming to download.

I listed him too - He's my hero :)

But if he comes up against Cro cop, I dont know who to go for! I'll still go for Randy because he will be the underdog. That will be an insane matchup. I can only hope it goes the distance and is all it could be.

Georges St. Pierre
Mirko "Cro Cop" - “Right leg, hospital...Left leg, cemetery.”
Quinton "Rampage" Jackson

Nick Diaz
Forrest Griffin

I'm warming to Tito, I can see through he's cocky bull**** and just purely see it as entertainment...This guy used to be my most hated fighter.

Mine came in the mail this morning jeez that was quick.

Now my DVD list is 1-30, 37.5, 38-52, 59, and 3 pride's from 2005. Watched UFC 20 last night, saw chuck get absolutely smashed by Jeremy Horn. You'd never have believed Chuck could've become what he is now going on that effort he was abysmal his striking was utter crap. And in the pre-fight interview he appeared quiet and unsure, man how things have changed.
