Winning 16 flags or managing to avoid the wooden spoon in 105 seasons of footy?

I know that you play footy to win premierships, but I was thinking that avoiding the wooden spoon is actually more amazing than winning 16 flags. For starters, no other traditional club has managed this feat. Essendon have won 16 flags as well, so we aren't alone there. Also, I don't have any stats to back this up, but I was thinking that if you averaged out how many sides have been in the comp each year, my guess would be that the average number would be about 12. That means that you should win a spoon on average every 12 years, and a flag every 12 years as well. This means we are entitled to have won about 8.75 flags and 8.75 spoons. This means that on this statistical measure, our lack of wooden spoons is more impressive. Of course I could be wrong with all of this.

What do you think is more impressive?

Hmmm scary B2001, you are starting to sound a bit like Dan with all that statistical information.:p

I tend to agree with you though. I think no wooden spoons is probably more impressive.
Does anyone know what the lowest position is Carlton have finished in? I think in recent times we finished 11th.

Upon re-reading my post, I have a feeling you may be right. That's the last time I do a statistics based thread!

Not winning the spoon is something we can hang our hats on when the Bomber fans start crowing but as we are still even on 16 flags, I'll rest on that laurel for now. If the Bombers win the next one, I'll go back to the 0 wooden spoons thing. ;)

16 premierships is good an all... but essendon dne the same now... and i just thin knot finsishing last EVER is a bloody good acheivment! it gets everyone... when ur in a n argumen... i mean who else can say taht and ahave a histroy like us?
i think 11th is the lowest we've ever finished.. few years ago... it'll be a sad day when we eventually do finish last... but by that time i'll be dead so i don't ned to worry :D

A follow up question here could be: Do we fear losing more than we crave winning?

Very good question. Our philosophy of not rebuilding means that perhaps we do fear losing quite a bit. Also, the fact that we are flooding so much (even in pre-season games) means that maybe we are scared to lose by big margins and embarrass ourselves? Just a hunch perhaps. The thing is, I don't think flooding can win you a premiership. Its good for damage control, but not flags. Just my opinion.

Screw the wooden spoons. 16 premierships is amazing, and you should be more proud of your outstanding achievements rather than your avoidance of the ultimate failure.

I am more proud of the flags, but I think as a statistic, avoiding a wooden spoon is more amazing.

yeah same here i think...
i mean, who wouldn't be proud of 16 flags??? it's amazing... but so is never having won a wooden spoon.. but they are differnt kind of things... we don't have a trophy for neevr coming last... and that's gonna change sometime for the worse, whereas premierships can only get better!

Avoiding playing in adelaide almost every year is a pretty impressive achievement whereas we have playeda at Optus almost every year I can remember

Trading for D Gallagher was also an immense achievment............no wait that was for the Crows.

Yep, I think you are right there. I do believe that the crows have played at Optus every single year in their existence....and this year the trend will continue:p

But Jars, don't you think trading Ben Nelson is equally as impressive?;)

I know you love the Blues Jars but to complain you don't see us enough, come on mate, the Crows will cancel your membership!

Besides, get in line behind the Swans fans if you think we don't visit enough. ;):D
