Every AFL game will be shown on free-to-air television next season following yesterday's breakdown of last-ditch negotiations between Channels Seven, Ten and Foxtel.

Seven and Ten, which in January won the AFL television rights with a $780 million bid over five years, vowed privately last night that they would show all AFL home-and-away games and finals until 2011.

Great for we interstaters, although my new year's resolution will be to aim to visit Melbourne to watch MCG games, maybe one at Launie just for experience sake.

Our last four winning games of the season were not shown on either of the FTA channels. Good riddance CH9! I watched them on Foxtel at a sports club in Darwin.

I planned to subscribe to Foxtel Sports but will not bother now. Langers this is great for our ever expanding video libraries.

Your thoughts?

Here, here.

Best news on the Broadcasting front EVER.

The last few years have seen the worst coverage in all of my years of watching football. Thanks Eddie for underpromoting the game. Goodbye and Good riddance.

Hang on a tic - they are saying that they are going to broadcast eight games - but would showing a 30 min highlight package of a game count? I am not so optimistic, and I am not 100% sure we are going to get the coverage that the media are making out we are getting...but someone please prove me wrong!

Gary, correct me if I'm wrong but Darwin have channels, 7 (combined with 10), 9, ABC and SBS. Under the current model the max is 6 games live unless SBS or ABC broadcast which is not in the mix at the moment. Foxtel/Austar will have to get involved if the AFL's goal of full coverage (like with the 9/foxtel offer) is matched/met. Darwin is not the only area affected. Watch for the response from the AFL over the week. Would not be surprised if pressure is put on to keep Foxtel, on 9 and Packer/Eddie who are deliberately blocking the deal.

I very much channel 7 and 10 are willing to give up any games. They have seen the amount of fuss been kicked up. think about it, if they have more matches, it means more butts on the couch. either way, i will be a member next year, so i should manage

I hope you're right, Fab Man!

The notion of utilising Channel 31 to show outstanding games is a blerrie nonsense for many, and I definitely count myself among their number given that you can't bloody well get Channel 31 in Canberra!!!

Something's gotta give so that commonsense can prevail.

Gary, correct me if I'm wrong but Darwin have channels, 7 (combined with 10), 9, ABC and SBS.Correct Fabulous.

While I was in Darwin I relied on going to a sports club to watch the Hawks on Fuzzytel. Ch10 were okay for one, sometimes 2, game/s on Saturdays and Ch9 were almost useless. If I did watch the latter with no Hawks games from them, I became bored with the drone-voice of Dermie and the try-to-be-funny Lyon who attempted to have excellent commentator Commetti as a straight-man. Really! Ch9 were a joke as an AFL channel ... let them stick to the bla bla screaming oversell coverage of Rugby League (that mob will be sweating if Packer sells out, praying that some Yanks will get to love RL).

It seems as though DC will return to Ch7, which is great news.

Getting back to your thoughts, Fab, I don't believe Ch31 would have the funds to be involved, SBS most likely, they have had a deal with Ch7 in the past to share golf telecasts when the former were heavily involve with something else which I cannot remember. We actually saw Sandy Roberts and his team on SBS.

SBS would do an excellent job but don't expect limited advertising as they will need some mega-bucks to help Ch7-10 pay the AFL.

Just my thoughts.

Zilch, Hawkk.

To my knowledge it is transmitted mainly in Brisbane and the outskirts northern end of the Gold Coast. However, obtainable in many regions in the north of the state, I have found in my travels.

At least the Sydney siders wont be able to switch to Iron Chef durring the game if SBS gets it.I am a bit worried about 31 getting it as it will interfere with Vassillis Garden or Katarinas Regional Italian Cuisine.
I dont get 31 out of Bundy or Gladdy.

So, how do we know what will be shown live? Or is everything being played live but on differant channels?

Hope every channel lifts their game, if Channel 7 have coverage anything like 9's then it's gonne be a miserable few years.

1 Sunday game won't be shown live - lets all hope its not the 1pm slot.

Could 8 games on FTA potentially affect crowds?

Is Channel 31 seriously in contention, or just part of the BS/ Bluff of the 7/10 negotiations with the pay tv mob?

A 1/2 hour highlights package, a slightly delayed telecast, or even a replay at 1am on a Monday morning is still a better package than what 9 have been part of. What 1/2 hour highlights package do I see now? How many times have I sat up to watch the 1 AM Monday game only for another movie to start, or taped what should have been a game, only to have to sit through a tape of some other rubbish? Unless its the Swine playing, in which case it must be rammed down my throat, football does get the flickpass in NSW. I assume its the same in Qld - unless you're a Brisbane fan, you get ignored.

Im looking forward to seeing my first Western Derby under the new broadcasting arrangements. Also, what may be game of the round, but unpalatable to the Sydney market will get a viewing, which as a footy fan I can only commend. Perhaps when there is an alternative on a Satrurday night, I will be able to watch the game rather than switching to Iron Chef on SBS. Its true, Ive watched more Iron Chef as oppossed to any Swines game, although when they are losing, I will switch.

Big tick in that I will see more of the Hawks, and another in that I will now get to see the best games of footy. At the very least, Im glad Channel 7 will be involved in the broadcasting. In my opinion, they always had a more serious committment to the game and its development.

Chanel #9 can go back and put some effort into Rugby League which they've helped run into the ground.

Cheers,
Steve

I agree with Tucky's Beard

Channel 9 and 10's coverage on the Gold Coast was terrible.
It did get you out of the habit of watching friday night football.
I hope the channel 7 and 10 coverage is a financial success, and friday football returns.
I glad to see the back of channel 9.
