The West had an article how the recruiting guy for Freo reckons he will get 3 players he ranks in the top 30 with picks 31, 50 odd and 77. Thinks 1 guy he ranks in the top 10-12 will fall to him for their first pick. Bases this on teams picking on need and the eveness of the draft from pick 6 one etc. I reckon he must be quite deluded - does he think he is that better than other recuiters to get a top 30 pick with no. 77?
Even less of course players he thinks are stars are not rated by other clubs.

That's Phil Smart -the same recruiting manager has been in charge of recruiting for the Dockers since their inception.
If there's anybody out there who believes Phil, I've got some prime real estate for sale about 50 miles west of Rottnest Island.

There would be quite a big difference in where different recruiters rate certain players.
Most experts rated Ryan Murphy a 3rd round pick in 2003. Fremantle drafted him with pick 12, and he looks like he is going to be a very good footballer.

Neesham made the final decision on draft picks while he was at the club. Since his departure our drafting has been good.
I think he is around the mark. He will probably get 3 guys he rates in HIS top 30. I remember when WC had picks 29 and 37. They snared Rosa and LeCras both ranked in their top 15.

Yep!
People get confused between BigFooty consensus and the preferences of people who actually watch the kids, meet them personally and form an independent opinion.

How can he know what other clubs are going to pick?
How can he know what other clubs are going to pick?
You'd be surprised. The clubs would go over and do a massive phantom draft just to see how things might pan out. Or at least do it for the first 2-3 rounds. Generally, to work out how highly your club ranks a player, just divide his draft position by 3. That is by no means a sure fire formula (obviously) but it seems to fit player rankings I here in comparision to draft position.
How can he know what other clubs are going to pick?
He can't. He'll feel like a right knob if his top 30 is taken in the first 30 picks! :D
But he has direct historical experience which would indicate my hunch that you could probably comfortably walk away with most picks you rank in your top 30.
If you want to argue about it, how's about you go nuts and pretend like you're a recruiter for a year, watch all games live or taped and compile a list without reading any media or footy sites. Then go through a post draft analysis of say your clubs picks and who you would have had on the table who you rated best available. I bet you'd have most in your top 30, even if you had a pick in the 60s or 70s!
Its a stock standard line more recruiters use. Read the papers sunday morning and you will see many quote along the lines of "we actually ranks our first for selections in the top 25 so we reckon we have done very well"

Smart did pretty much what he said he could do, which is an awesome prediction. I can't believe that he had the courage to call it, then deliver the goods.
From WEAVER's phantom draft list, which is a reasonable guess at player ratings;
17. Clayton Collard (Carlton). Collard is better but less credentialed than the higher-profile Jetta. Has a hint of Gary Ablett jnr about him. Collard might develop into a midfielder in time and alongside Betts gives the Blues some flair and genuine game-breaking pace and talent across half-forward.
24. Brock O’Brien (Hawthorn). O’Brien is out of fashion. He is probably a Hardwick or Kingsley type solid, tough back-pocket or tagger. Plays a little taller than advertised, uses the ball well. Tough to pick when a player like him will be taken. Really depends on which clubs (if any) are shopping for a specialist back-pocket. The Hawks love his type and might be his new home. WA directed all their defensive rebounding through O’Brien which reflects his matiruity and kicking skills.
Caleb Mourish is a more of an unknown quantity, but the club has a really good history of developing late picks, and on paper he looks like a pretty physically mature player with a fair bit of agression and skill. Another good call by Smart.

Burgatron had them at 31 and 50
Still
I reckon the Dockers would be very happy with their drafts selections

Brock O'Brian is a perfect example of the point was Smart was making. Could realistically be rated in the top thiry prospects, yet he was able to be picked up at 52?
Maybe Smart was a being a bit optimistic about pick 77, but Mourish is a guy who recruiters could be excused for ignoring. He played one game for Souths Colts I think?? and may well have tanked in the WA screenings so he would slip to the Dockers last pick. Smart may well have rated him in the top thirty talentwise based on watching a lot of him, rather than referring to his honours sheet.

The Burgatron draft is a prediction of what will happen, rather than a ranking in terms of quality.
