Its seems everyone at Carlton are questioning this selection, i admit I wanted proud or hislop, but I have come around. Watching the vic vs sa game, grigg was the first person that stood out for me, apart from a few clangers at the start, for some reason he reminds me of a cross between Franlin and Embley, just the way he moves. Best of luck to the kid.;)

I'm happy with the recruiting department having made the right selection :thumbsu:
Big Footy is full of self proffesed draft experts who have "their" favourites and when they don't get picked up by their club they whinge about the player that was picked up not being any good.

My thoughts exactly mate. Will sit down at some stage this week and have another look at his games during the carnival and form my own views. One player that i really didn't have a good look at during the build up to the ND as I thought we may have had other players on our radar.

Don't worry boys, Grigg can play, i have seen alot of footy from him both at the rebels and his school St Patricks College Ballarat. Know Grigg as well, great kid with his head firmly on his shoulders, he will run all day for us and be able to kick goals running forward. Is deceptivly taller than most think, very fit and know this kid will train bloody hard, very blue collar type player who should play i reakon 10 or so games next year. I reakon he will be the type of player to take over from the ageing Matty Lappin!

Can he win his own ball or is he predominatly a reciever (appears so from what I have seen)?

Grigg has a penetraiting left foot kick and is team orientated. He was an AIS-AFL Academy graduate in 20005 and represented VIC Country at the NAB Under 18 Championships..
The undefeated North Ballarat Rebels have provided the spine of the team with eight representatives lead by the talented Shaun Grigg. Grigg has been in outstanding form this season playing every game, averaging 23 possessions and booting 14 majors to date.
The Rebels remain undefeated after eight rounds and were impressive in defeating last year’s premiers Gippsland Power by 38 points, with the prolific Shaun Grigg again starring with 24 kicks, two goals and seven tackles.
Sounds like another young midfield star has slipped through to our hands...

What impresses me most is his attitude. Plenty of youngsters have talent - Grigg certainly does, but he also has the right sort of attitude to actually make it. I really hope he 'makes' it.

Definitely not questioning this pick.
Have had my eve on him for quite a while, and I think he will be a very good player for us in the long term. Hopefully we see him a few times in the Navy Blue next year, but he definitely needs to bulk up.
Exciting prospect.

More outside than inside from what I have seen. But at 190cm and pretty handy leg speed, we may have found someone that nobody in BF rated.

And that's why he'll be a player. ;)
At least he's a tall and quick, goalkicking wingman which is something we haven't had in a long, long, time. I feel he's likely to be our Pendlebury who wasn't rated in the top five in 2005 but looks likely to justify his selection at 5. A player's character is as important as talent in the long run and in hindsight I'm glad we didn't go near some of the name players on offer this year.

Had another look at the 1st half of the WA vs Vic Country game yesterday and Grigg certanily stood out. He kicked the first 2 goals for Vic, had 8 touches in the first quarter and his disposal by hand and foot was very solid. Seems to have pretty good vision, and has a good turn of speed.
However, he is a very very one-sided player, but most left-footers are, but hopefully this is something he can work on once he starts training at Carlton.

On the one sided issue....one thing i noticed from watching the champs is that most of the kids use their preferred foot 99% of the time. Occasionally you will see a bloke go out of his way to get onto his preferred foot, which Shaun did on a number of occasions....this tends to exaggerate their one-sidedness. I would like to have seen more of him and the other kids on tape before worrying about one-sidedness, as i suspect it is a skill that is really only developed to AFL level once you are in the system of a professional club. On the positive side of the coin, some images of Grigg doing this suggest he has a nice sidestep and the ability to sell the dummy and get around blokes, so it is not necessarily a bad thing and i don't think he is that far behind his peers as far as one sidedness goes. Would be an interesting exercise for people to watch the games again and see how many kids kick the ball with their non-dominant foot.....not many i suspect.
I think that's a fair enough comment Gilly, but I just thought it was more noticable with Grigg, maybe becuase he is a left-footer. Most kids use their dominant side, but they really do need to know how to kick on there non-preferred foot as well.
Hopefully he can use his right side as well, but I have yet to see him use it.

Grigg looks to be a real talent. 190cm pacy midfielder with ton of attitude, class and goal kicking potential. Think I read somewhere he's a lifelong Blues fan as well. This could be another Hughes masterstroke. :)

A little IIRC, but he also DID NOT hang out the back of packs and get the easy kick - ala Scott Camporeale.
The more that I think about it, the more i think Wayne Hughes might have pulled a rabbit out of a hat here.

Saw Grigg at training / family day Friday.
If you look under the Hartlett / Raso / Flint thread I have ended with my team for Round one (speculative / subjective) next season.
As a calculated risk I have Grigga on the wing over playing a Gibbs early on.
At 190 cm, 80 plus kg's (pre season not over yet), good penetrating left foot, can run the lines with good endurance, why not, he is a chance.
I felt he had better strength and development in his lower body (calves) than say Gibbs, and I feel once we get over the romance of Gibbs we will let him play (possibly) three or four rounds in the VFL before his debut.
Now that's not to say Gibbs won't play round one and dominate, don't get me wrong, but I think you will read my reasoning and they are reasonable.
Obviously injuries etc will have an impact on that selection and of course NAB cup form.
