What is happening next year re; the draft? I have read that we get our priority pick next year?

I have no idea what is going on with our draft picks next year, can someone shed some light??

One more year to go, lets get the job done properly and not cut any corners. No one could match Brisbane in terms of talent and no one will be able to match us. Next year is a unique opportunity that won’t come around again for a very long time now that the priority pick rules have changed. Don’t think one elite player doesn’t make a difference.

I read that elsewhere. Can someone tell me what it means? Do we get our priorities next year? Coz we're not finishing in the bottom 4 next year i can tell you that now :thumbsu:

Is the board just letting it go, or do we get our picks next year, prior to round one? If so, does that mean we get the best available talent next year as well?????

AWG, do you ever want Carlton to succeed, or do you just want us to keep collecting PP's?

Under the new rules, if Carlton win 4 games or less next year, we will be entitled to have a PP before the 1st round begins.

Edit: I'll take that back AWG, maybe i should have read your post more closely!!

Yeah, we get an extra pick.... but probably another million dollar loss as well. Seriously, the only thing we shoud be thinking about next year is winning. IMO, we have a enough talent to be a premiership side in a few years anyway.

Are you kidding me HBF??? Do i ever want the blues to succeed?? I hope you were joking.

If you read on, you'll realise i said "Coz we're not finishing in the bottom 4 next year i can tell you that!"

Thanks Johnny_3, you hit the nail on the head, i was wondering if we got it for the one we lost, regardless of where we finish next year. Reimbursment of 2004. That is what i was asking.

I did not mean that i want us to finish bottom, or anywhere near it. I can't beleive you'd actually think i thought that.

For the record, check my posts, i have said that I hope we finish around 12th next year, but also hoped for finals.

Just check all my posts on where i think we will finish/hope we will finish, if you actually doubt my enthusiasm for the Carlton Footy Club.

Oops, sorry honey, my mistake!!
Guess i should have read that post a fraction better. Can i blame it on 3.5 hour flight to NZ and then a 2.5 hour car ride to Tauranga?

it can look good on paper but its going to take time for these blokes (kids) to learn to play together and put muscle on etc we are going to get number 17 but we have to be patient and then its really PAYBACK TIME
bottom four or five next year is probable some more good kids sets us up for a good crack at it for a good period.
i would love to finish higher but i think thats reasonable as the kids mature

Just highlighting the talent we had at the club BG (Before Gibbs)

Yeah that's ok HBF. I get very touchy when people knock Carlton, or knock me loving the Blues :) I love them, heck, we even have a Carlton doorbell at our house! :thumbsu:

I was more surprised that you doubted my desire for Carlton to succeed, that's all.

Nothing makes me happier than singing the song at the end of a game.

On a nicer note, BG and AG hey? I think we had a heck of a lot of talent BG, and now AG, with him and those other quieter players we picked up, lookout in 2 years time, because those 15 other clubs will be having sleepless nights when they have to play us.

Wont be long.

That is all well and good, but the thing that a lot of people don't realise (or choose to ignore) is that every other club in the AFL also has quality youngsters. In fact, you could write a similar list for ANY club in the AFL that is at the very least equal, if not far better, to Carlton's.

For example:

Sherman
Rischitelli
Clark
Brennan
Selwood
Adcock
Drummond
Moody
Roe
Stiller

Deledio
Tambling
Oakley-Nicholls
Meyer
Pattison
Polo
Reines
Pettifer
Thursfield
Newman
Coughlan

Clearly the team with the weakest band of young talent is Collingwood (thankfully):

Pendlebury
Thomas
Rusling
Iles
H. Shaw
Swan
T. Cloke
Egan

However, West Coast, the team that won the premiership and should theoretically have the least scope for improvement:

Rosa
Hurn
Butler
Graham
Hansen
Hunter
Staker
Selwood
Nicoski
Waters

Don't get me wrong, I am excited about our future, but merely listing quality youngsters is entirely irrelevant. It is about how those players are developed as a group by the coaching staff that matters, and quite frankly, I don't know if Denis is the man to do it.

AndyWalkersGirl

No. The qualit list of young players is not irrelevant at all.

Yes, most other teams have a good young list too... but the thing is, we have one to match them, which is what we have lacked over past years.

Yes, you can have the development team in place, however if the kids dont want to do it, they wont. Ultimately it comes down to the kids, and that is why carlton are lucky, is that our youngsters have wonderful attitudes.

Apparantly they do (http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,20825092%255E19762,00.html)

Sharks is right, a lot of other teams have decent enough lists, and development is a factor, however naming Pagan as the man responsible for the development of these players is, as always when this happens, scapegoating. One swallow does not a summer make, (but a summer makes one swallow), we now have some excellent staff in recruiting, and of course the addition of Bradles and Rats to help develop the youngsters. I think as far as getting the most out of young players, Denis is often considered one of the best. His treatment and turnaround of Fev (anyone remember him on GTrain), development and persistence with Simpson are testimony to this.

Perhaps now, as mentioned Denis finally has a list that is on par with other developing lists, rather than a substandard AFL list yet good VFL list, as has been the case for some time, we might be able to see what he is capable of and judge him on his merits rather than on the poor performances of those who preceded him.

But, as mentioned, well see.

AndyWalkersGirl

I agree with you Audas.

Let's not forget, Pagan walked into absolute sh1t when he took teh job. It would take anyone a number of years to turn the club's on field performance around. Sheedy, Matthews, name names, no one can turn around such a crap situation over night.

Be patient fellow blues. And when it's good, maybe then will we only see that Pagan did all he could.

Truth is, it was absolute sh1t when he came, and it's natural that it will take a few years to turn it around. Pretending it can happen in a year or two is riddiculous.
