I was at the game on Saturday and for those who weren't, or didn't get to see it, here is a small rundown...
Tredders played quite well up forward. Led strongly for the ball and combined well with Cornes on occasions.
James had 4 set shots from the same spot on the ground and missed them all! I have never seen him kick like that before!
Guerra was solid across the half-backline. He is seriously an angry little man on occasions and, along with Hardwick, toughens up our defence. Very solid over the ball and at the man!
Wakelin played off his man most of the time and picked him up on the lead. Solid game, but had little to do on an ordinary opponent.
Stevens and Francou were rested for periods throughout the game, but combined very well again, as they did for the majority of last year...lets hope it continues!
Hardwick...my first look at him in our colours! Moved well in defence. Good to see him still at his angry best as he was at Essendon.
Michael Stevens and Cassisi.....I think I might need to change my vote in the Poll as Michael certainly laid the best claims for the wing spot on the weekend! He delivered it quite well and had it quite a bit at times also.
Wanganeen didn't seem to play much in the last half. Looked ok up forward.
French looked ok up forward once again. Would like to see him in a pinch-hit role there though, not necessarily permanently. Don't think we can fit a healthy Primus, Lade and French into our team, but time will tell, I guess.
Thurstans looked a little lost when tried up forward initially, but then played ok when put into defence. Played on Darcy when he went forward to let Primus play the ball.
Shaun Burgoyne looked way taller than I expected. Has he grown in the past two years??? Looks like he could almost play as a third tall option in defence. Still has enough pace to be used on a flank or even the wing (thanks Eago).
Montgomery finally too a speccy! Hasn't flown like that in a while. Favourable boundary umpiring decision got him the ball in the first place. Generally played well.
Generally, it looked like a training run! The first quarter was awesome (obviously except for the kicking at goal!). We had 104 possessions to their 54 in that opening quarter. Our half-backline was brilliant and never let the ball pierce that line for most of the night. We seemed to have a system when bringing the ball out of defence and it worked a treat. I think, however, that the first quarter inaccuracy was more due to the Power returning to their 2000 ways and chipping the ball wide into the forward line, as we had many shots from outside 40m on difficult angles. We seemed to straighten up well after that though.
One last thing...not happy that all the boys weren't able to get to Bells Hotel after the game. Oh well, round 2, I guess!
Disclaimer...
This rundown is all I can remember from the drunken haze which was Colonial Stadium last Saturday. Sorry, Macca, it isn't in the same league as your summaries, but I gave it a go!
