Hussey, Lee and Ponting all have 4-5 years left. We have players like Jaques who would be all but a walk up start in any other country still playing Sheffield Shield. We'll be fine, thankyou for your concern.

Add Clark (maybe 3 or 4 more years) and Clarke (10 years if he's good enough) to that list too. Warne could play for another 2 or 3 too.

no one will.
The thing that means this Ashes series could be the last for a few of these players is that they don't play another series for 12 months. There are plenty of young players around but the problem is that some of the players in the team are playing just good enough to hold on to their spot. It's hard to believe that someone like Martyn is in the top six batsmen in the country.

Lee and Clarke :(
if they are the leaders of the team in 5 years time, it will be lean days :(

Thank you Peter Harvey for the late news
Nothing new here and I am sure the selectors are aware of it. Look for a few players to hang them up after this series and a few more over the next 12-18 months in stagged fashion.
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Jacques
will form the nucleus of the next generation
Tait
Johnson
Clark
are international standard and offer enough variation
Look for the young pups to be blooded in the middle order and 'keeping positions.
Australia will drop a couple of ranking points but I'm confident will be there or abouts
That's not quite true.
Ok....when is the next series? I know it's not in 12 months but you could atleast give us the right answer.
Lee and Clarke :(

Lee won't be and if Clarke is in the side in 5 years it means he is in good form and has a half decent career behind him, you must know that unless you just like bashing the same players for no reason.

i'm with you mate, aside from a possible test series against Zimbabwe I don't think there is anything concrete in the way of Test matches before next summer.

Well, no ********. Everyone knows that Australia's reign at No 1 won't and can't last forever. But sliding down the rankings as we inevitably must one day won't make the years at the top any less impressive.

He is far and away in our top six batsman. That is such an ignorant statement, Martyn has performed admirably for years now. Just check out his statisitics in both forms of the game and come back to me if you don't believe me- they don't lie.

I was about to respond with facts and intelligent language, then I saw who it was posting and realised I shouldn't bother.

Okay, so an average in the high fourties in test cricket and forties in one day cricket isn't good enough for you, is it?
Remember, he single handedly won our sri lankan tour, indian tour and ICC trophy. Not to forget his courageous World Cup Finals innings, played with a broken finger.
Some people let their personal opinions of someones character get in the way of the facts.

Cosgrove, Clark, Jaques will be the batting backbone. Tait, Johnson, Lee will be the bowlers. We will be just fine.

Since the start of last years Ashes he's averaged 27. He's scored one century since the NZ tour in March 2005. Now I don't know about you but I personally don't consider that good enough.

2 poor innings straight after a hundred. Give the guy a go. On that basis we should get rid of Hayden as well and Gilchrist would be long gone.

ODI cricket means nothing in comparison to tests.

You can't drop someone because of 2 poor innings.
No-one's mentioned Watson either. Only 25.
Could see something like:
Hussey
Jaques
Ponting
Cosgrove
Clarke
Watson
Haddin
Clark
Johnson
Cullen
Tait
With White, Symonds, Bracken, others, up our sleeve. Warne can't be replaced. But methinks we'll be strong for a lonnnnng while yet.

If there is a bolt from the blue I'd like to see, it would be for an out and out quick with a bag of tricks
We seem to have had a long line of them since Lillee and I don't know how well the No1 strike bowler tag would sit with any of of Lee, Tait, Johnson, Clark

Really? Prehaps not a bolt from the blue but I'd have thought the ideal scenario for Australia would be for Hilfenhaus to continue his development.
For my money Tait's decent enough to be the out and out strike bowler and in Johnson and Hilfenhaus you could have two accurate, quickish (140ks) bowlers who hit the pitch hard and move the ball plenty. Nice variation as well with Mitch being a lefty and Watson could be in there as well to keep things steady.
