View Full Version : community camps
i took the family to one of these a few seasons ago and found it very educational. Whilst i do not expect the lions to come to the sunshine coast every year, holding their community camp around brisbane is hardly taking the game to the regional areas.
It's in Brisbane is it? The only snippet I saw on it said South East Qld. I kind of assumed that would mean it's Toowoomba way or something.

yeah all I have seen is SE Qld which covers a HUGE area including the sunshine coast.

They can come to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
I thought that in the last couple of years the club has taken a bit of a scattergun approach by sending players to a few different locations like both Coasts and Toowoomba. The AFL website says it will be held in SEQ which could conceivably mean as far north as Hervey Bay and out to Toowoomba in the west.
The Kangas have Gold Coast so presumably Brisbane won't go there. I hope the Kangas don't focus entirely on the Southport/Labrador/Broady localities because the Tweed district also has a growing AFL following population.

I dunno - maybe blinker doesn't consider themselves to be a part of SE Qld?

i heard they would be travelling as far as sandgate which is about 25k from home. I was hoping this was just a cruel joke and someone might know a bit more about true destination. no offence intended on sandgate, but it is hardly regional?

They will be at Broadbeach, almost no doubt about that. Would be surprised if Southport wanted much to do with it ATM, with the recent announcement regarding the Kangaroos/Broadbeach joint venture by way of a Social Club at Carrara.
Last year, both Essendon and Melbourne came to the Coast, and I believe Essendon spent most of their time on the Southern end of the Gold Coast, but Melbourne's camp was a near disarster as it was for too early and the numbers at the junior clinics etc were very poor.
Where is the most important area to grow the game? 200 miles away, or right on their doorstep? Give them a break.

They can come up here, we are in League heartland. They are always popping into the schools and shops up this way, the League blokes.
We are in a picturesque part of the state, and if they come up after Chrissi they can pop out to the festival for something different.

Exactly. Most of SEQ is. We need to develop the game here and get people excited about the lions, before we go galavanting off to Alice Springs.
It's alright for Melbourne teams wanting to expand their supporter base elsewhere - everyone there follows aussie rules and they would all have a team. It's our job (Brisbane Lions) to ensure we draw as much support for the game in our own backyard.
Two Qld Community Camps in '07
The Brisbane Lions will spend their 2007 AFL Community Camp covering all quadrants of the Brisbane metropolitan area, while the Kangaroos will be based at their new ‘second’ home, the Gold Coast.
The AFL has unveiled Telstra as a new major sponsor of the camps, which will be held in regional and city areas in February next year.
Every state and territory will be covered as the 16 teams fan out across the nation, although the Lions won’t have far to go.
Following a drop in attendances, membership and TV ratings in south-east Queensland last year, the Lions will work the suburbs of Brisbane for the full week of the camp, rather than the traditional three days. The Lions have also committed to spending time in the community on the Sunshine Coast after the community camp.
The Kangaroos will familiarise themselves further with the Gold Coast following their late-season announcement that they will play 10 premiership games on the Coast over the next three years.
All clubs will again conduct training sessions, visit schools, nursing homes and hospitals, conduct NAB AFL Auskick clinics and community football forums for local coaches and administrators.
AFL General Manager, Game Development, David Matthews, said the camps were now a traditional part of the AFL season.
“The Telstra AFL Community Camps give communities the opportunity to see AFL coaches and players at the highest level preparing for the season ahead. Clubs have the chance to have a positive impact on every part of a community, which is a fantastic prospect,” Matthews said.
Telstra Country Wide Group Managing Director, Geoff Booth, said Telstra was delighted to support the 2007 Telstra AFL Community Camps as a means of engaging with local communities.
Since the Community Camp concept was initiated in 2003:
+ 1334 primary and secondary schools have been visited
+ 278,261 students have been reached during school visits
+ 34,653 children have attended Camp superclinics
+ 13,437 people have been visited in hospitals and aged care facilities
+ 10,420 people have attended official functions in all areas
+ 13,463 people have attended community football forums, and
+ Official club functions have raised over $216,000 for junior football or the community in each camp region.

The three main metro centres of SE Qld get a community camp of some description. This makes sense to me. They need to shore up any lost support from the past 2 years and the best way to do that is to get kids hassling mum and dad to go to the footy.

You wouldn't be saying that if you grew up there.... :D

My father remembers when Sandgate Rd was a dirt track in parts and when Sandgate people went to Redcliffe for their holidays!

thanks for that, the mail i got was they had ditched the sunshine coast because of a rigourous pre-season schedule and the 'spend time in the community" on the sunshine coast would become too hard to achieve that close to season start. The source of my info is credible, but does have an axe to grind with the lions. So i sought confirmation. ta for that.:thumbsu:

completely agree with this, yes the game needs promoting in regional areas etc but with the downturn in crowd numbers in the last couple of years we really need local support building again. No point kid in the back of booger bugger bop whoop saying he wants go when they would need a GPS and two pack camels to get to a game when we could get 25 newbies from Kedron etc etc.

Here's something novel but perhaps they could spend a little time in Melbourne.
Noticed that the Swans had another Melbourne family day on the weekend.
They really have shown the way, & clearly place greater emphasis on their Southern support while we appear to have slipped in this area.

You would think if they had a pre season camp in Melbourne for a week, it would be a real boost for memberships.I know a lot of people who would be rapt to see the team, and get involved in stuff. They do always seem to miss out in Vic compared to us.If we got another 500 members, it would be a real boost.

To be honest Campbell it wouldn't even have to be for a week. just hold a clinic at a family day.
They just should have something before Xmas, even just the sale in merchandise for the day would make it worthwhile... ie. Xmas gifts, let alone the potential membership sales.
As I said previously we could learn a bit from the proactivity of the Swans. Since Brad Fox left things appear to have fallen away, IMO.

Its a shame we have slipped in this area.
I know how starved of footy we all are this time of year, but especially our supporters in Melbourne.
We are fortunate up here, we can nip over to UQ and watch training, or turn on the news and see the players.
A family like the Swans or something similar prior to Christmas sounds ideal.
I know Lions gears makes excellent stocking fillers. As do memberships for kids.
I am lining up for a Freo Adult membership for son this Christmas on to of other stuff.
