POBT

I asked for rule clarification on the other thread but I realised I didn't need it for my first pick.

Pick 2: Sir Garfield Sobers (West Indies)

Once Bradman was out of the running, the choice was fairly easy as to the next best player of all time. Sobers is arguably the second best batsman of all time but was also capable of brilliant bowling and fielding. He averaged a tick under 58 with the bat and about 34 with the ball. Sobers fills the batting all-rounder spot and gives me flexibility due to his uncanny ability to bowl left arm fast medium, left arm orthodox spin and left arm over the wrist spin. But 26 hundreds and a high score (and long standing world record) of 365* seals his spot in my top order. His batting alone gets him into World XIs.

Warwick
12th December 2006, 15:23
My pick:

Shane Warne

I wasn't planning on picking modern players this early, but Warne is too hard to ignore. One of Wisden's top 5 players of the century, Warne is the leading test wicket taker, an excellent slipper, and a more than useful lower order bat.

Can we have an update of the picks please it is all over the place with whos still playing and that.

Well at the moment the picks are:
1. Lady Lawrence - Mark Taylor
2. POBT - Garfield Sobers
3. Warwick - Shane Warne
4. toddy -

It's all in the thread. Apparently Sherminator is out, and we haven't heard anything from CoZi. It's your pick.

toddy
12th December 2006, 16:08
ill take Walter Hammond (30's) and Ian Botham (70's)

Warwick
12th December 2006, 16:14
Ok my next pick was also not as i planned at this early stage, but i thought i need a 'keeper and why not get the one who most people will remember when voting.

My second player:

Adam Gilchrist - picking two modern players this early may come to bite me but i couldn't look past Gilly after selecting Warne with my first selection. There are not too many better 'keeper-batsmen to have played the game so i am thrilled to snap him up. Averages just under 50 with the bat, and gives me room to select another bowler (or more than one allrounder), such is his skill with the blade. He will probably bat from 6 to 8 in my team.

POBT has next selection.

do you need someone to step in last min :p

You now have the next two picks if you are playing. Do you understand the rules?

do you need someone to step in last min :p
If you want to play roostersgal you are most welcome. You were seriously disadvantaged last game so if you want revenge - step forward. :D

# 2 - Imran Khan (Pakistan 70s or 80s) - got to check on era

Lady Lawrence
12th December 2006, 18:58
not totally sure of the rules but if you just tell me on here when to make my next selection I will do it straight away, have done my research and have my picks plus some backups

Warwick
12th December 2006, 19:30
This has become very confusing with players dropping out and others coming in so i will try and summarise it quickly for all our benefit. Hopefully everyone is now familiar with the rules - you need to pick a player from every decade since the 30s to build your best team (30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s). If a player played in more than one decade - you get to choose which decade they "fall under". Because there are only 8 decades (i.e. 8 players), your other 3 players can be from any decade (but you are only allowed to pick a maxium of 2 players per decade). We will make it that you don't need to nominate which decade your selections fall under until the end. If you have any questions before your pick, just ask.

Some research is involved, and there are plenty of websites floating around with leading statistics etc to make it easier. Wikipedia has a few good lists on leading batting and bowling averages for example, and cricinfo.com has all the players to have played test cricket.

The order has also become very confusing with a change in players so i suggest we sort it out now to get it back on tract.

Firstly, i'm happy to let Lady Lawrence change her first pick if she wants considering she wasn't clear on the rules. She can do that as soon as she wants and pick any player apart from those already taken.

Next, roostersgal gets a pick. She can take her first pick as soon as LL changes her pick (or states she wants to keep Tubby). RG can than take Sherminator's spot in the order if no-one objects to that?

So in summary, the next succession of picks are as follows:

LL - to change, or keep her first pick.
roostersgal
POBT
LL
LL
POBT
roostersgal
CoZi
Warwick
toddy

The order after those 8 picks will be in the same pattern:

toddy
Warwick
CoZi
roostersgal
POBT
LL

LL
POBT
roostersgal
CoZi
Warwick
toddy

etc etc

Does that look right to everyone?

Lady Lawrence
12th December 2006, 19:40
I'll stick with tubby thanks, he would have been on my list anyway. Just let me know when I need to pick me next one

roostersgal4eva
12th December 2006, 19:45
in that case I choose Wasim Akram (Pakistan) 80's

roostersgal4eva
12th December 2006, 19:52
does Cozi need to change her two pics or we gonna let her have it :p

and as I understand it, Bradman's excluded right?

Warwick
12th December 2006, 19:56
Ok. Well the picks so far and the order for the rest of the game is:

Round 1:
1. Lady Lawrence - Mark Taylor
2. POBT - Sir Garfield Sobers
3. roostersgal - Wasim Akram
4. CoZi - Sachin Tendulkar
5. Warwick - Shane Warne
6. toddy - Walter Hammond

Round 2:
7. toddy - Ian Botham
8. Warwick - Adam Gilchrist
9. CoZi - Imran Khan
10. roostersgal - Ian Healy
11. POBT - Len Hutton
12. Lady Lawrence -

Round 3:
13. Lady Lawrence -
14. POBT -
15. roostersgal -
16. CoZi -
17. Warwick -
18. toddy -

Round 4:
19. toddy -
20. Warwick -
21. CoZi -
22. roostersgal -
23. POBT -
24. Lady Lawrence -

Oh and roostersgal you don't need to nominate the decade you are using for your selection until the end (therefore Wasim Akram could be selected as your 80s or 90s pick). This makes it easier for when we get to the last couple of selections. You may as well have your next pick now as well so we get back to the proper order.

roostersgal4eva
12th December 2006, 20:02
Ok

Ian Healy - Australia

Warwick
12th December 2006, 20:07
And just a couple of things: the order always goes in this pattern, so have a look when you are on to see if it is your turn and just take it. You don't need to wait for anyone.

I'll try and update the picks as much as possible, but if i'm not on, just have a read of the thread to work out when it is your turn (even if i haven't updated the selections). Feel free anyone to update the list after your turn and maybe tell the next person that they are up so we don't have any confusion.

Grimreepah has said he is happy to help with receiving PMs of your next picks, so if you know you aren't going to be on for a while - just shoot of a couple of players to him and he will put one down for your next selection to allow the game to run a bit smoother.

Obviously we can't all be on here all day so we will wait 24 hours for a selection. If it is your turn, and you don't get on within 24 hours (or have sent a PM to someone with your selection), your turn is skipped and the next person in line gets their choice. Once you get back online - it's your turn. Hopefully we don't have too many big delays because it can get pretty frustrating. Remember you have the option of sending a couple of players to people if you know you aren't going to be on for a while.

Sorry if this sounds heavy-handed - the game is not going to be over in a day, but it just makes it go a little smoother and results in less frustration for everyone. :D

Warwick
12th December 2006, 20:10
Ok

Ian Healy - Australia

Ok POBT is up next. I'll send a couple of picks to Grimreepah because i probably won't be on for much longer (although i doubt my turn will come up tonight) and will be working tomorrow until 3.

LL has until 9.05am tomorrow to take her couple of picks before POBT can select his next player.

POBT
15th December 2006, 08:25
I guess I will jump in now. LL has 2 picks when she is back on line.

The toughest selection for me so far.

Pick 26 - Curtly Ambrose (West Indies)

Warwick
15th December 2006, 10:20
Lillee, Marshall, and now Ambrose - POBT is sorting out the most important players in the team very quickly. You would imagine every team will have a very strong batting line-up - you need to be able to bowl them out.

Roostersgal can take her next pick whenever she logs on.

Lady Lawrence
15th December 2006, 13:09
can I please pick Robbie Williams - he can do anything as far as I am concerned!!

But in all seriousness I'll go for picks 4 and 5 as follows:

Mark Boucher (SA) 00's
Ian Botham (Eng) 70's

Warwick
15th December 2006, 13:12

I forgot all about Andy Flower. Excellent pick-up - good enough to play as a batsmen.

Pick 29: Keith Miller

Averaged 37 with the bat and 22 with the ball. Can open the bowling as well as being able to hold down number 6 with the bat.

Toddy's computer isn't working, but he has told me he wants Alan Mullally and Phil Tuffnel has his next 2 picks.

LL, is that the order of your selections?

Edit - I have to ask because I was going to take one of those 4 players with my next pick (which is after your next two). Depending on the order in which you select them, either my pick will have to change or your final picks will have to change. Confused? I know I am!

You will need to post them in batting order.

OMG poop I never realised we had to pick 'em in batting order! So whichever one you wanted Gal tell me and you can have it and I'll change one of them. Although at a push I thunk I'll keep Alec so one of the other 3 can go

should I re-post my selections in correct order now or does it have to stand as selected?

I think it would help your cause. This is how you must win my vote. I guess you have not had time to read the discussion thread through but I disccused team balance as I am a bit of a beleiver in that. Look at Englands lack of balance in the Ashes. They have paid the ultimate penalty.

By the way have a safe trip and a great festive season.

thanks John, i'll just do my re-order and then hopefully win your vote!!

After watching this ashes series I reckon we have a Grant Thomas situation with the English team, some bloody good talent there but some stupid decisions. Monty should have been in at the start. G Jones, yup on paper he has the lowest ever number of ducks but you need some more bloody runs t back that up and how may flippin balls has he dropped behind the wickets ore stumpings that should have happened. Anywhoo moving along bring on 2008!!

Hi LL,

Did you get my PM re: Laker?

You don't need to pick them in batting order, you just need to come up with a proper order after you are finished. I think you should arrange those 4 picks in order of priority (if you haven't already), and we can work out if it affects someone else according to the order.

I know it is my pick next but I really can't take it until LL advises on the order of her 4 draft picks.

To me it looks like she has her final team on this (http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6418249&postcount=87) post.

Yeah, but that includes a player that I would have taken if available at my next pick. Iwas hoping LL could confirm which order (ostensibly) she would have taken the 4 players she has nominated because that affects my next pick.

But if it makes the game proceed, I'll write off my preferred selection and select someone else instead. I'll leave it for another couple of hours for LL to respond to my PM and posts.

In the interests of getting this thing done, I'll take Bill "Tiger" O'Reilly.

So we stall again. RG needs to re-take her pick because Hammond was taken very early.

Hopefully CoZi has hers ready to go as well because we could easily finish this tonight.
