Wow. Zuffa and White are really cleaning up as of late.

Reigning PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix champion Mirko Filipovic has apparently decided to bolster the ranks of the UFC heavyweight division, a source inside the Croatian's camp informed Sherdog.com Wednesday.

Rumors have buzzed of Filipovic's departure from PRIDE since his official Web site reported in recent days that he would not fight on the Japanese promoter's year-end card.

Filipovic, the No. 2 heavyweight in the world behind PRIDE champion Fedor Emelianenko, would make an immediate impact on a division that has long been considered among the weakest in the UFC. Terms are not known, but it's expected Fillipovic, 32, could sign one of the most expensive multi-fight deals in UFC history.

A former K-1 star, "Cro Cop" moved from kickboxing to mixed martial arts in 2001, and has since amassed in impressive 21-4-2 record. His biggest accomplishment in MMA occurred just last September, when the Fighter of the Year candidate stopped Wanderlei Silva and Josh Barnett on the same night to capture PRIDE's Grand Prix crown.

It was believed tournament victory would secure Filipovic a second crack at Emelianenko, whom the Croatian lost to by decision in epic August 2005 clash.

Filipovic's four losses have come against Emelianenko, former K-1 World Grand Prix champion Mark Hunt, a shocking knockout against former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman and by submission in a classic battle against former PRIDE heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

"Cro Cop" is renowned for his striking skills, which features a devastating left high kick that is responsible for highlight-reel victories against the likes of Silva, Igor Vovchanchyn and Aleksander Emelianenko.

The super-striker would immediately vault to the top of the contender list for Tim Sylvia's UFC heavyweight belt, should the "Maine-iac," who is currently renegotiating his contract with the Las Vegas-based promoter, remain with the organization.

There has been some discussion inside the UFC that "Cro Cop," who was not under contract to PRIDE, would make his cage-fighting debut versus, a young, undefeated fighter whose strength is on the mat.

The HW division is looking better and better now with the inclusion of Mirko and Herring. If Aleks is also brought in, the UFC HW division will be revived. What does this do to Vera's contendership for the title?

Do I cheer the fact that the UFC if finally getting serious with the calibur of theior fighters? Or do I lament the fact that Fedor v crocop is now off the cards?

Sylvia is ********ed.

Mixed feelings there... cro cop no longer in pride.. :( Still It will be great to see him in the cage... silva is screwed.

If only the MMA circuit was like the Tennis Circuit where there could be a Pride (Japanese) Grand Slam and a UFC (USA) Grand Slam and any fighter could go in either..

I feel the same way. Unfortunately, I doubt this will ever happen.

Nothings confirmed its just some "source" saying it. I'm certain we will see Fedor/CC eventually.

You got to think of CC's position if he fights Fedor and loses, the UFC would certainly offer him less $$ and hes in his 30's. Right decision for him long term.

I understand there are no contracts in place at this stage but i can't help be excited at the prospect of Tim Sylvia having his head kicked off.

That way, we no longer have to watch him parade in that stupid belt everytime we see him.

EDIT: Doubt he would reach his head but would love to see Sylvia fallen by leg kicks.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is expected to introduce Croatian heavyweight Mirko Filipovic as its newest acquisition during the Dec. 30 UFC 66 pay-per-view card, Sherdog.com learned Wednesday afternoon.

A star in the competitive PRIDE Fighting Championships' heavyweight division from Nov. 2001 through Sept. 2006 — when "Cro Cop" captured PRIDE's Open-Weight Grand Prix crown — Filipovic is slated to make his Octagon debut against Southern California's Eddie Sanchez, a source close to Sanchez said.

Widely recognized as the best heavyweight mixed martial artist in the world behind Russian Fedor Emelianenko, "Cro Cop" has amassed in impressive 21-4-2 record, including recent triumphs over Wanderlei Silva and Josh Barnett in the GP to cap off his Fighter of the Year-caliber performance.

Undefeated in six fights, Sanchez made his UFC debut on short notice as part of the Hughes-Penn II undercard and stopped Mario Neto. The heavyweight's other contests, all of which he won before the bell, took place in King of the Cage and Total Combat.
This is from today, so Sherdog are still sticking by their original report. I guess we'll find out for sure on NYE. If true and Sanchez is Mirko's first opponent, there is highlight reel footage coming right up.

The UFC 66 under-card just started and after the Perosh/Wellisch fight, ZUFFA aired a video package with a Croatian Flag bearing the name of Mirko Filipovic. I think this is pretty much confirmation that he is coming. I just hope that they promote him better before February.

At the post fight press conference, White announced Cro Cop vs. Eddie Sanchez officially and said Cro Cop has a two year, six fight deal. I don’t care if it costs me $60.00, I’ll be shilling out in February. LHK > Eddie Sanchez.

PRIDE has just started, I'm pumped. WAR SHOGUN RUA!
