View Full Version : Who should the openers be for the one day series?
Who do you think the openers should be from the squad announced recently?

BigKev,
I think the Aussies are going to play the 2 Queenslanders Maher and Hayden as openers, thus pushing Gilchrist back down the order a bit. Both Jimmy Maher and Matthew Hayden have a good record for the Bulls in the ING Cup, and I think it's worth a try for a few games in South Africa to see how they go.

I dont chose any of your options.
I'd like to see Damien Martyn open and anchor the innings with either hayden or gilchrist. Maybe Gilchrist open and hayden at three (the best no3's are originally all openers).

Maher & Hayden for my liking. They know each others game, they have been playing together for a long time and both can hit the ball hard.
Gilly can move down the order and do a Shaun Pollock at the end of the innings if he gets a chance.....

I was going to put Martyn on the list but I am just not sure if it would suit him to open the innings. My feeling is leave him where he is at the moment whilst he is scoring runs.
either Hayden and Maher or Gilchrist in Maher. Voted for Gilchrist and maher, but after reading some of the comments and remembering what a great pairing Hayden and Maher have been for queensland, that would be the logical choice.
Cheers
hayden and gilchrist i reckon.
If thats not working, give Maher a go.

If I had my way It would be Langer and Hayden to open. In test matches they are scoring every match at around 4 or 5 an over. They can do it successfully in test matches, why not in one dayers.
Anyways, I would try a Hayden & Martyn or a Martyn & Gilchrist opening combination.

Langer is apparently pretty peeved about not being in the squad, because he has a reputation as a dour batsman. Gilchrist aside, I'd say in recent series, Langer has been the quickest scorer in the Australian team in terms of a runs:balls ratio. His strike rate since returning to the Test side in England has been very high, and his style of game has been very attacking. Seems to be a more natural game for him, than the dour gritty batsman who used to hold down an end for an hour or two then get out for not many, looking scratchy the whole time. When he plays his shots, he looks a much better, much more comfortable player.

The ODI side should be:
1. Gilchrist
2. Maher
3. Ponting
4. Bevan
5. Lehmann
6. Martyn
7. Watson
8. Harvey
9. Warne
10. Gillespie
11. McGrath
Maher is a better ODI opener than Hayden IMO. But I reckon the selectors will pick Hayden with probably Maher & drop Gilchrist down the order.

I would prefer a right/left hand combination.Gilly and Martyn appeals to me.

I would open with Hayden and Gilly. I can't understand why people want to push Gilly down the order. He is clearly Australia's best and most attacking batsman (especially on current form). Why not get him out there from the start with the field up. He didn't have a great Australian oneday summer but I doubt that opening was suddenly the main reason for it.

I must admit I didn't think Langer looked very impressive in the ING matches and as we recall Mat Hayden looked all at sea in the recent ODI's in Australia despite the way he batted in the tests.

I agree with everyone in the team, but i'd have Martyn at 4, and Bevan at 6. Let Bevan hold the innings together and bat with the tail, and let Martyn have a crack at a few 100's.

Good side Kane.
I'd go with Gilchrist and Maher as openers as well. Hayden is yet to convince me he is One day material.
My team.
1. Gilchrist
2. Maher
3. Ponting
4. Martyn
5. Lehmann
6. Bevan
7. Harvey
8. Watson or Lee.
9. Warne
10. Gillepsie
11. McGrath
Brett Lee is probably a little too costly in the one day game (he's also a little too costly in the Tests as well) but I am unfamilar with Shane Watson. So I will reserve my judgement until I have seen him play, but he has some big wraps so he must be extremely promising.
I'd also like to see young Nathan Hauritz get a game. He has bowled well in the ING Cup and I think Australia would benefit even more, by having a Leggie and an Offie in the side.

Must admit I orginally had Marto @ 4 & Bevan @ 6, but changed my mind. I think the batting order needs to be flexible depending on the situation. eg. If we need someone to pace the chasing a target Bevan would be the man to bring in earlier. If we need the tempo of the innings lifted (ie. when bogged down), then Lehmann the guy. However, if Australia bat first, Martyn probably should be batting @ 4 as he can make big hundreds.
It should be hayden and gilchrist because the are good batsman and they are power house batsman and if that doesn't work it should be mahar and hayden

Maher and Hayden have got a great record with Qld and I would give them first crack in Sth Africa. Bevan is best suited at no.6, while Gilly can do what he likes at no.7. Watson should get a go in front of Harvey as the freak didn't perform very well in the last series.

There is no way Gilchrist should be dropped down the order to 7. The guy is on fire at the moment and hopefully will bring his test form into the one dayers. Gilchrist can dominate an attack like no other player can. Maher has very little experience at all when it comes to international cricket. He may be a good player in domestic cricket but has not yet proven himself as an international player. Gilchrist batting at 7 is a waste. At best he might get 5 or 10 overs. It is better having Gilchrist open the batting and allowing Australia to get off to a "flyer" so to speak. Having Gilchrist open is a must in my opinion.

I think Gilchrist has gotta open, the only possible reason why he shouldn't is when Australia are chasing and Gilchrist has already had the pads on for 50 overs...then maybe drop him down and see how the chase pans out. As for his partner, well I think Hayden and Lehman would be above Maher in the pecking order and i'm leaning towards Hayden getting first crack with Lehman down the order.
I haven't seen Watson play too often, but with all the wraps on him as an all rounder how high could he possibly bat; i.e. could he fill a top order spot or is he more a 6,7 or 8?
