Draft your own squad

I meant to post this in the sub forum but this computer I am currently using is super slow and it literally takes me two-three minutes to load new pages, so I don't have five minutes to waste, but basically this idea has derived from some of the other club forums and I thought it would be a good idea to do something a bit different on this forum and tackle the idea of drafting your own squad from scratch.

Basically, sixteen dedicated members will participate. The way it will work is best in, best dressed, but please only participate if you are a frequent user of this forum (or you can promise that you will be if you aren't already).

All current listed AFL players will be available to draft. The object of this fantasy game is to produce the best possible squad of 26 players. Also keep in mind that it is for imediate success, and not for the future, so draft for players as if this competition will only last for one season. We are drafting the best team here, so don't select 26 good midfielders because there isn't much reality in that.

It isn't drafting for a point-scoring competition or players who get a lot of touches, so selecting a player like Chad Fletcher or Adam Simpson over Barry Hall or Matthew Lloyd would be fairly stupid.

I suppose we will start the drafting process as soon as we get sixteen members. The draft will be weighted, so if you have selection one in the first round, you will have selection 32 in the second. Pick 16 in round one has pick 17 in round two (both selections adding up to 33).

To make it a bit more interesting, when you post your interest, also post the team name you would like to be the coach of. Only one catch, though, your team name has to be related (or connected) to the Western Bulldogs.

Just to clarify a few things, I'm not aiming to make this a point-scoring fantasy competition like the Dream Team. If anyone has any ideas what we can use our final squads for to compete against each other somehow, then feel free to suggest something.

We could post some polls for the public to vote and rank all sixteen teams if you wish to do that, but if we could do something else like run a fairly accurate program to play our teams against each other, then that would be great, but I don't have a program available to do that.

Also, with the draft order, I will give all members a random number, and an outside (third) person can send me sixteen random numbers from 1-16 in any order, and that will be the order of the draft.

I might even make two outside people help order the draft.

Yes, you must draft one player from every club, as well as one player from each continent, at least one homosexual player with four legs and two tails, and one former female and ex prisoner.

In other words, no there are no restrictions to what players you draft. You can draft any comination of players that you like, so you could end up with 26 Bulldogs players if your heart desires. I wouldn't like your chances of getting 26 Bulldogs players, though. Carlton players, maybe.

Unless you have an idea on what we can introduce, it will just be something we can do to compare team lists, as if there were all competing against each other in the AFL for just one season.

I think whatever system is fine, just that you should have rules, points system etc in place before people pick their players.

Well I suppose you have a point, so I will introduce a point-scoring system before we start. I know I said it wasn't going to be a point-scoring fantasy footy competition, but I'll change my mind.

I will copy a point-scoring system from a current fantasy footy competition and we'll run with that.

Scoring System

Kick - 2 points
Handball - 2 points
Mark - 3 points
Clearance - 2 points
F50 - 2 points
D50 - 3 points
Hitout - 1 point
Clanger - (Minus) -5 points
Goal - 6 points
Behind - 1 point
Tackle - 4 points

F50 = A player who possesses the ball into their attacking forward 50.
D50 = A player who possesses the ball out of their defensive 50.
Clearance = A player who clears the ball from a stoppage.
Clanger = Blatent error such as a possession straight to the opposition, kick out on the full, free kick against.

Is everyone happy with this?

When we get our sixteen coaches, I will begin a new thread for the draft.

Sounds fine to me. Is there one of those online comps we can enter that does all our calculations for us? I am unsure as one or twice I picked a team at the start of the year then watched on as they got injured or dropped.

I can just copy the player scores from one Fantasy competition from another. Shouldn't take me too long. The guy who calculates the scores has a program that automates all player scores, so once he has automated the results, I will begin to add each team's score that way. Shouldn't take any more than half an hour on a Monday or Tuesday night, really.

I am currently a 1 so it would be unfair on everyone else (maybe) if I had the number one pick, so I'll get the first outside to order the numbers giving everyone a new number. Then when we have those numbers, I'll get another outsider to also make a list of numbers in any order containing the numbers 1-16 and that will be our draft order.
