Wat an amazing player...

An entertainer which is the most important thing of any sportsman....

People say he is simply a basher but he isnt...a very solid player..has a test triple century and a few double hundreds as well inlcuding a breathtaking one at Lords...

Has a good record against Australia as well with a couple of nice centuries.

Also has taken a lot of wickets...some 300 in one dayers i think and possibly 100 in tests???

The best thing is that he has remained a very modest sort of person...comes frrom a simple little fishing town where his family still lives. In fact his mum was swept away with the tsunami waters and a young boy saved her life...unfortunately that boy perished in the waters!

He does a lot for charity and is a big advocate of fighting aids...

Well done Sanath

SL are not really a smokey, they are the 2nd best in the world.

Great Player, great entertainer, 37 and still going strong

Probably my favourite non-Australian player. I love watching his little bald head trotting in when he's having a turn of the ball. Absolute excitement machine with the bat but isn't your run of the mill basher. Very under-rated.

Fantastic player... any chance of him hanging up the boots after the WC?

Would be one of my favorite players.

But I'm confused about something. Didn't he retire then make a comeback, or did he never retire at all?

I think he was talked into making a test comeback after retiring from that form of the game.

A true great, at his peak he was probably the best all rounder in the world. A devestating batsman and a more than effective bowler.

Ever heard of Kallis or maybe a Pollock?

Sri Lanka a world cup smokey?

how about no. the world cup is in the West Indies, they won't make the semi's.

Pakistan is the only Asian team with a chance.

I'd have Sanath over both to be honest.

Pollock can't REALLY bat and Kallis is a medium pacer at best.

This has to be the most dumbest call I have ever seen/heard etc.

Kallis has 8000+ test runs @ 55 plus 200+ test wickets @ 32, thats Sobers terrority.

Polly has 400+ test wickets @ 24 plus 3500+ test runs @ 32 with 2 Test tons and 15 test fifties.

Now compare that with Sanath (I love him, but you cant compare him to these players in all rounder stakes)...

Sanath has 6700+ test runs @ 40 plus 96 test wickets @ 34

Shauny and Kal are definately better all rounders.

Agreed. Kallis isn't a great bat anyway, never counterattacks like Jayasuriya, Ponting, Lara etc

Well done on not even adressing the issue in my post :thumbsd:

I said he doesn't have the counterattacking ability to be considered a great batsman.

Let me guess, you're one of those Saffies who thinks Kallis is a better allrounder than Flintoff too?

Those stats are good, but they certainly don't mean everything and Kallis is not in the same league as Sobers

Career wise, Kallis absolute ********s on Flintoff, quite easily mate.

Those stats are just good?

Like saying Pontings stats are just good.

Kallis is a champion mate, definately a better allrounder than Sanath.

Better bat, bowl and slips.

kallis and Pollock are definitely better allrounders in tests...but in terms of being a matchwinner id have Jayasuriya miles ahead of Kallis and fractionally ahead of Pollock...

Kallis bats slower than an old lady walking into a gale...Pollock is by far a better bowler but Jayasuriya can win a game of his own bat...

In one day cricket id have Jayasuirya any day of the week...in fact id only have Lara, Ponting, Gilchrist and Tendulkar at his best ahead of Jayasuriya.

As for the World Cup...if ur a betting man put some money on SL to win or at least make the semis...the pitches arent as bouncy as u think and in fact SL have a reasonable one day record their i thinks (someone might wanna check that). And put some money on Sangakarra being the leading run getter or the player of the tournament....Australia are the best by a mile but among the rest i think anyone can beat anyone on their day

It was opinion, not based on the rankings.

You are not seriously considering South Africa a chance in a World Cup are you?

Wonder how they'll manage to ******** up WC 2007

I dont see SA being a threat but hey it would be good for cricket if they are...

My predictions for hte top four in no particular order...

1) AUstralia
2) Sri Lanka
3) Pakistan
4) India

I dont know about the Windies...certainly have the batting!

We beat Australia, India and we drew with India at home while being ranked number2.

We are better than all countries bar Australia.

In ODI, I'd rather have Shaun Pollock than both.

In Tests, I'd have the two Saffa boys and Sanath a far third.

As for being a matchwinner, yes, Sanath is better.

Kallis has alot of MOTM's though, IIRC more than Sanath.

We'll see when the WC rolls around.

Are there bets being taken on how South Africa could stuff this World Cup up.

1999- We had the comical run out

2003 - We had the South Africans failing to count in a competent manner

2007 ??????

Hasn't this been the case before the previous World Cups too?

Before WC 2003, you were ranked 2nd and playing on your own patch. Failed to make it past the group stage.

Before WC 1999, It wouldn't surprise if you were ranked higher than us.

South Africa are the second best ODI team behind Australia and their recent form has been very impressive. They will be a strong chance for the semis and a good chance to make the final, their only enemy is their mindset.

a lot of people were calling jayasuriya too old and bagging his form when in reality teh SL management asked him to play through with pain killers instead of going in for surgery.

This was about 2 or 3 yerars ago.
