He gets bogged down too often... But I guess that has happened to every England player this tour.... The pressure that we build up is immense and they all can't seem to work the singles. He's a very good player, I rate him. Hee seems very much like Kallis to me. He'll be a good player.

Agree, he is only 24 though and should improve.
This will be the hardest series he will have for some time. Our attack was phenominal this series, hell even Lee improved the last two tests.
He was given very little loose stuff and played & missed to some outstanding seam bowling by Clark & McGrath.
IMO needs to attack more through cover and mid off when driving and cut more than back foot drive to the shorter stuff outside off.
Good effort to make four fifties in this series, some of our batsmen would not have done this against our attack.

I was thinking that the other day.
England need an attacking number 3.
Vaughan is marginally more attacking then Bell and when fit i think Bell could bat at 6 and flintoff at 7.
A bit like Ponting back before 2001.
Strauss
Cook
Vaughan
KP
Collingwood
Bell
Flintoff
That looks a good line-up
Right now the line-up looks one batsmen to short.

Thats fine for now, but when Jones comes back, if he comes back, a batsman will have to go.

As long as Freddie's ankle holds up they don't need five bowlers.

It's an interesting point, always seemed like he'd be a number 3 but then made 3 consecutive tons at 6 against Pakistan in England.
Also had a good tour of Pakistan although was poor in India.
I reckon he'll go onto have a pretty good Test career, seems like he learns lessons pretty well & is an improver but like 4 of the England top 5 he doesn't really dominate.
Him & Cook both need to make the further step up against class bowlign but it's probably pretty hard when the only truly classy side they get to face is Australia. But you can see how Bell has pushed on from the last Ashes so hopefully this series will prove to be an important part of his education.
Cook clearly has to work on the fact that in this series he's getting out caught at wicketkeeper or first slip nearly every knock.I suppose at least he's not giving his wicket away getting caught in the outfield & he's no getting bowled or LBW but there's something wrong with judgement & technique around that off stump.

It could be good for injuries if we even rotated the bowlers to avoid wear and tear by Harmison, Jones, Freddie etc
LtD, thats basically the side I have been wanting since the series started but Joyce to be tried at no3

To be honest Bell always reminds me of an old style opener - the get in there, take the shine off the ball type. Mind you, he's effectively been a third opener this Ashes anyway.
The fisty pumper
Tried to be an angry young man and failed
Will make a lot of runs for England though. Has the game and temperament IMO. I also don't think 3 is his position. I would open with him and Strauss and allow him to build an innings. Drop Cook down the order. KP should be 3 if he is worth his salt.

Nah, look at the way he attacks Warney, sure he gets him out alot but he gets everyone out, Bell likes to attack the slower bowlers so he should be down the order, like KP he struggles a bit against the moving ball outside off stump

It was funny when the pigeon got him in the nuts with the ball.

I know exactly what you mean, he looks that way to me too.
But I get the feeling looking at his Test career to date & where he's done well & where he hasn't that maybe he's lacking a bit when the ball's coming on with a bit of pace & bounce. His best spell was at 6 & his best tour was on the flattest of pitches in Pakistan.
Mind you you could say the same about Collingwood & KP didn't want to bat as high as 4, so it seems that we might have to pick 4 openers & then let those 3 come in with a bit of protection.
The bottom line is that somewhere somebody has to be able to bat at 3 & 4 for england & be able to deal with a newish ball but also be able to attack. For me 3, unless you like the 3rd opener type, is about what I guess you might call transference, being able to dog it out when it's tough but then open up when the chance is there & the guy at 4 definitely needs to be able to do that.At the moment England have got 4 batsmen who don't really dominate & the one that does likes to be as far away from the new ball as possible because he's a bit of a flaky starter.

England's 2nd best bat easily. Should open. If he had Collingwood's determination he'd be averaging a lot more than he currently is.
