I'm thinking of venturing down this season to see my first game at Skilled Stadium. Never been to Geelong before (except for Avalon airport then shuttle to Melbourne), and I was thinking of making a weekend of it with my wife. Is there good stuff to do in Geelong, or is it better to stay in Melbourne and travel to the game?

I have only been into geelong a couple of times and doesn't seem to be alot to do there so I guess it depend on what you like doing on your holidays if it is shopping, going out for dinner and the casino then go to melbourne and travel down. If it is relax and watch the world go by then geelong or one of the nearby coastal towns (probably too cold for swimming since it will be winter though) (Torquay, Lorne etc)

but I guess someone who lives in geelong will be able to give you a better idea.

If your wife isn't much into footy, I'd suggest staying in Melbourne and travelling down by car or PT.

Stay near Eastern Beach - Sheraton is nice. Meals at Sailors Rest, maybe Kingy's eatery [the club will tell you where it is], or the club bistro. If you've got a car take a trip down the coast.

A cruise down Solar Dve in Whittington would make for an interesting afternoon.....

Good idea to stay at Eastern Beach and make use of the Sheraton and the good restaurants along the waterfront. If you're looking for a day trip there are plenty of great wineries and restaurants along the Bellarine Peninsula, or, better still head down to one of the great coastal towns of either Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, Torquay, Lorne or Anglesea.

There's plenty to do, depending on your interests. As well as the coastal towns and wineries, there are similar inland, around Lethbridge, Anakie etc, and you can take in the ghost town of Steiglitz. For me, the art gallery, for others perhaps the Wool Museum. Just wandering around the beach area is good too. Check out if there are local markets, as well.

The Breakwater market is on every Sunday, but be careful not to get mugged ;)

It very much depends on your tastes , for a couple of ideas try http://www.visitgeelong.org/attractions.asp

Unless things change Golf is a little shot at the moment , its so dry they are just not at their best. Maybe if you are coming down , give the club a ring and arrange a tour of the club you support , I'm sure they would try to take care of a Geelong follower thats from Sydney.

Maybe you could snaffle BJ's little black book. That's sure to have every haunt in town in it and he won't be needing it for a while.:D

Stay around eastern beach and take a trip down Point Lonsdale way. Contact the PR section at the club, I'm sure they'd look after a first time interstate visitor.

That's cool CIS.. Hope you have as good as time as I did when I've been up to Sydney to watch Geelong play! (im two trips, for two wins atm ;) )

Anyway, I would try and see a match at KP as early in the season as you can, cause then the weather will probably be a bit nicer. (Remember it is always cooler in Geelong than in Melbourne).

Cunningham peir is pretty nice. The fish n chips across the road from it is really good (even tho i havent been there for a few years now), and one time I took a boat cruise around the bay which was pretty good too.

I'd also highly recommend going for a trip down the Great Ocean Road if you haven't done that before. Only about an hour or so drive from Geelong, its awesome.. Lorne, Angelsea, etc etc.

Have a good trip! :)

They have special street lighting in Harpur Road. Some nights it's a lit up Commodore, sometimes it's a lit up Toyota. On very special nights it's a house.

there's the daily bong-on at Eastern beach, if you're into chroming I would try any form of public transport, the nightly punch-on at anyone of our fine drinking establishments is always a favourite and then of course the Geelong favourite pastime is playing chicken with the traffic on Princes Highway.....enjoy your stay!.:thumbsu:

This would have to be the funniest thread on Big Footy IMO. Runs rings around all the try hards on Bay 13, that's for sure.

All these things can be seen 24 hours a day in the one spot - Market Square Mall

Cat in Sydney, most of the semi-serious suggestions here are really good ones. I stayed at the Four Points Sheraton for New Year's Eve, which was great - there are bay views from pretty much every room. The buffet there is pricey but tasty - just don't eat beforehand so you can gorge yourself!

Ocean Road is obviously really amazing, although I feel the best parts are between Port Campbell and Warrnambool rather than between Lorne and Anglesea. So it would depend on your time frame.

I love Geelong - would move there in a flash if my circumstances allowed, and not just because it's the home of the Cats. It's got its dodgy bits, but so does every city.
