What position will he play in 2007?

Medium defender again. His run from defence is great, along with his ability to chase and tackle. He will be a gun midfielder soon enough, i'm not sure how many minutes he will get in there this year though.

Does he train with the midfielders or defenders at training? Is he likely to play and beat the small forwards as he has done in the past?

Why are Carlton fans so keen for info on Jed? Have they heard something? :p
Yes I hope Jed will continue to beat the small forwards - it's not like he is getting old. I'm not sure what group he trains with - that might be one for Ashli.
I have high hopes for this bloke. Future captain IMO.

CAREER HISTORY
When it comes to assessing Jed Adcock's second year as a Brisbane Lion, raw statistics can do a lot of the talking - one of only three Lions to play all 22 games, fifth spot in the AFL's Rising Star award and the eighth most disposals at the club.
And just in case those number's don't do Adcock's 2005 justice, there's plenty more evidence of his impressive development. Like successful stopping jobs on Phil Matera (twice), Adem Yze and Gary Ablett, plenty of dash out of defence and some limpet-style tackling on opposition forwards.
When Adcock took his place in the Lions' line-up for the Round 1 clash with St Kilda, it was only his third senior game. By the time he wandered out onto the Docklands for Round 22's meeting with the Saints, it was his 22nd straight game and his 25th overall.
So impressively did Adcock come on in 2005 that he was, by season's end, considered an integral component of the Lions' defensive unit. Respected commentator and Rising Star judge Kevin Bartlett rated him the competition's second-best emerging player, behind only Richmond's Brett Deledio, while Rod Austin and Kevin Sheehan had Adcock ranked third.
The pacy utility has certainly come a long way since arriving at Lions from the Victorian country town of Maryborough, as the 33rd pick of the 2003 National Draft.
"It's pretty surreal when you first get up there and especially going to first training session and seeing Vossy and Aka walk by and Leigh Matthews. Do you talk? What do you say?," was how Adcock remembered his first few days as a Lion, when addressing the audience at the Rising Star lunch in Melbourne.
Adcock may have been a little unsure of himself back in those early days, but - if his on-field performances are any guide - he ought to be a lot more comfortable in his surroundings now.
A handy contributor through the first four games of 2005, he really came into his element in Round 5, when asked to stand dangerous West Coast small forward Phil Matera. The Lions went down by 73 points but, despite the Eagles' dominance, Matera wasn't a major factor, managing only one goal.
The Matera match-up, Adcock said, helped provide him with the confidence to continue to mature as an AFL player.
"When I played on Phil Matera, that was when the coaches really showed faith in me to play on an All-Australian player," he said.
After his success against Matera, Adcock really kicked on. He shut down Geelong's much-vaunted Gary Ablett, shackled highly-skilled Demon Yze and curbed Fremantle's Jeff Farmer, just when the unpredictable goalsneak looked like breaking the Round 11 clash with the Lions open.
A season and career-high 22 possessions against Carlton in Round 12 earned him his Rising Star nomination and his level of contribution did not drop off towards the end of the season - even when he was struck down by groin trouble.
The seeds for Adcock's outstanding year were sown in 2004, when he showed some good signs in the first two games of his AFL career and with the reserves in the AFLQ.
Adcock gathered nine possessions and kicked a goal on debut in Round 7 against the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome, and also played in the big loss to Fremantle in Perth in Round 9.
Around that taste of elite level football he was a regular standout with the Suncoast Lions, particularly in the first half of the season.
Quiet but with a determined, steely resolve, Adcock excelled at three different sports as a youngster.
Growing up in Maryborough, that's of Victorian ilk not Queensland, Adcock successfully turned his hand to athletics, basketball, and AFL.
As a 10-year-old he was the third fastest sprinter in Victoria over the 70m, 100m, and 200m. By the time he reached 12, Adcock had swapped the sprinting spikes for the high-tops and made his way into the underage Victorian basketball team.
That was a combined Vic Metro and Vic Country outfit - no mean feat. But what started out as a bit of fun at Auskick as a seven-year-old eventually turned out to be his career choice.
He was ultimately taken by the Lions in the 2003 National Draft, after showing plenty of promise at all sports.
밒 quit (athletics) after the year I came third at states. I quit to focus on basketball because that's when I played for Victoria,'' he said. 밫hen I focused on that and quit to play footy which started as a muck-around initially. I've always played cricket but not at a higher level.''
Adcock has not totally wiped the idea of returning to the basketball court if things don't work out in his AFL career. Despite his love of basketball though, not wanting to risk any unnecessary injuries, Adcock will leave the round ball alone.
밄asketball is easily one of my favourite sports, and if I ever got the chance to play it I would now. If it wasn't for footy, I'd go and pursue basketball,?he said.
밒 started playing basketball when I was five and ended up playing for Ballarat, so we travelled there for five or six years.
밒 played until I was about 16 then found it was too hard playing both (basketball and AFL) and I started getting better at footy and obviously had to focus on that.
밫hey've both been close together in terms of what I like most, but I just felt there was more opportunities with football.''
And that has proved to be the case so far for the former North Ballarat Rebel.
The 40-minute trek from Maryborough to Ballarat became a regular journey for
Adcock and his family, combining the two sports through his teens. A regular travelling buddy was close mate Troy Chaplin, who just happened to be snapped up by Port Adelaide at No.15 in the draft, giving Maryborough two draftees from its population of 8000 people.
밯e travelled everywhere together,'' Adcock said. 밯e always shared the
trip ?one night his parents would take us and the next night my parents
would take us. The town is pretty big on AFL.?br>
Playing for the TAC Cup's Rebels fast-tracked Adcock's development, with a 15-year-old Adcock mixing it with players three years his senior. While a daunting prospect at the time fronting up to more physically dominating opponents, Adcock agreed it was a necessary evil for his career.
밒t was tough,?he said. 밫hey were all wearing full beards and stuff. It was a bit of
a wake-up call. But the next year when I played, I knew what to expect.?br>
Adcock captained the Rebels in his final year, giving a leadership edge to his aggressive game.

Sportal for afl.com.au
In his first full year in 2005, Jed Adcock finished third in the Brisbane Lions club championship following a stellar season on the backline where he was one of the only three players at the club to play all 22 games.
The other two were fellow defenders Chris Johnson and the controversial Mal Michael who has been making news of his own recently after retiring only to discover a new lease of life with Essendon.
Adcock had approached 2006 with plenty of confidence but received a setback with a dose of osteitis pubis which required surgery and had him on the back foot with regard to preparation.
He recovered to play a couple of pre-season games before tearing his quad, putting him out for seven weeks.
After one reserves match he re-injured the quad five minutes into the round nine clash against Fremantle on a warm Sunday afternoon at the Gabba and was forced to sit out another seven games.
The 21-year-old, told afl.com.au he has learnt from experience what his body is capable of and admits he was perhaps feeling a little too confident about his fitness.
"I had not even torn a muscle before so the quad was new," explained Adcock.
"Despite a little bit of back trouble and the osteitis pubis I never had any trouble with my leg muscles so perhaps I was oblivious to that and it caught me a little bit surprise.
"We don't know the reason why it went, but it is a lot stronger now and I'm working to make it stronger so it doesn't happen again."
Adcock eventually recovered and was pleased to play the final six games of 2006 averaging a healthy 22 possessions. But he was naturally disappointed about how the year unfolded for both himself and the club.
"I was happy with the way I ended the season by playing some good footy," he said.
"I was just disappointed the team was not in a position to make the finals at that stage."
Adcock's motivation for next year is simple - to think more about preparation and recovery after games.
"Maybe last year I didn't do as much as I should have or could have done in that area," he conceded.
"You don't think you have your spot in the side but some people might think because you play at that level you know where you have to be instead of pushing yourself to be better.
"I don't think that's necessarily the case with me but I thought I knew my body better than I actually did."
The Lions' 2006 injury-toll has been well documented and everything is being done at the club to ensure there's no repeat.
According to Adcock, all the players are excited about having the best 22 players available and seeing what they can produce.
"We all want to see what the best 22 for Lions are capable of and no-one is sure who they are because over 40 different players have played the last two years," enthused Adcock.
"A lot people say we have been downhill for the last couple of years, but we still do have an experienced group at the club and the new guys are coming through," he added.
After missing 14 weeks this year and with 2007 looming Adcock senses he is back at square one, but says he is ready to return to the backline if that is where he is required by coach Leigh Matthews.
"Everyone wants to play in a position where they feel the most comfortable or they play their best footy," he said.
"Growing up that was the midfield and I am working towards that here, but if I move up to a back flank and get used sparingly on the ball then that is OK."
Thanks Ashli, good stuff. :thumbsu:

Adcock on being drafted (http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/11/23/1069522473435.html) (November 23, 2004)
Drafted, now the big move
November 24, 2003
Two boys from the same Victorian country town face new lives at different interstate clubs. As Emma Quayle reports, it's the way of the AFL national draft.
After Brisbane recruiter Kinnear Beatson drafted Jed Adcock with the 33rd selection in Saturday's national draft, he took him for a late breakfast. Adcock sat with Beatson for more than two hours before driving home to Maryborough. But yesterday, he could barely remember a word that was said.
"There was all this talk about all these things and it was a bit weird, breakfast at 1pm," said the teenage defender, who last visited Brisbane as an eight-year-old on a family holiday and will start his new life as a Lion next week. "I was trying to listen, and trying to eat. I can't remember anything anyone said."
Yesterday, Adcock remained mostly overwhelmed. And just a little tired, having celebrated first with his teammates from the North Ballarat Rebels, and later with his Maryborough mates. The 18-year-old spent Saturday night at a friend's place and driving home yesterday morning was struck with the sudden thought that this should not be happening.
"When I got in the car I just thought about Brisbane and was probably wishing it was a Melbourne club so I could still drive home and see everyone now and then," Adcock said. "It will be a good move for me. I'm just still getting used to it."
He is not alone. Of the 52 teenagers drafted on Saturday, 38 must pack their bags, farewell families and board planes for strange cities before taking their next step in dream-completion. Eleven Victorians were selected by out-of-state clubs, including six members of the Country Victoria team that won this year's national championships.
Among them was Troy Chaplin, whose life first intersected with that of Adcock at primary school and in the Maryborough under-13s. Now, it will continue at the opposite end of the country, in a Port Adelaide guernsey.
After breathing his sigh of relief before the end of the first round, Chaplin was in a back room at the draft waiting to be interviewed on television when his mother rushed in with his mate's fate.
He felt less frazzled than his friend yesterday and, having travelled with various basketball teams and to Ireland with the AIS-AFL Academy last April, is confident he knows enough about life away from home to survive in the "big, Bendigo-type town" that is Adelaide.
"It takes a while to hit you. At the draft I was looking at all the kids in Fremantle and Melbourne clothes and I thought to myself, 'I'll be wearing a Port Adelaide top - hang on, that's Adelaide, that means I have to leave home'," Chaplin said. "The real time I think it will sink in is when we're at the airport, leaving."
Adcock will also fly out for an initial, pre-Christmas stint next week, although the recent discovery that he had suffered for most of the season with glandular fever and a liver infection means he might take things slightly easier at first.
Before then, he and his parents will have Beatson around to their house to hear a little more about relocation, boarding, training, studying, part-time work, and all the rest.
"I think that's why it feels like a blur so much, because there's all this information," Adcock said.
"You think it through all the time but then you'll just be talking to your mates and out of nowhere you think, 'hang on, I'm moving interstate'.
"That's the hard part. When you're hanging out with all your friends you just think, I have to leave all these people and start a new life."
As do, in a different way, those who are left behind. Adcock is the youngest of Jenny and Paul's three kids - "and the dumbest, but I'll be earning all the money now".
One sister, Jacqui, studies forensic science in Geelong and the other, Kym, is at Ballarat University. Adcock hopes having watched the girls move out will help his parents cope quickly without him, although it may well take time.
"My mum got a bit emotional yesterday. I didn't see it but I took my best mate to the draft with me and he said she started crying a bit," he said.
Kathy Chaplin's instinct when she heard her boy's name called by the Power was to think, "you little ripper", and to enjoy Troy's widening smile. She thinks it's a good sign he will be fine, and that she will be fine without him. "He'll have his times and he'll be on the phone.
"I don't think it will be every night of the week or I'll be saying to him, 'stop ringing us up, concentrate on what you're doing and get stuck into the footy'," she said.
"A couple of calls a week and I'll be pretty happy. But I think he's just going to love it."

Rising Lion: Jed Adcock
Profile by Scott Heinrich
FOXSPORTS.com.au
JED Adcock is at the forefront of a new breed of Brisbane Lions players ready to lead the club to the next level.
Picked up at No.33 in the 2003 national draft, Adcock was ushered into the team’s defensive set-up after the following year’s grand final loss to Port Adelaide.
In 2005 he showed what a precocious talent he was by featuring in each of the Lions’ 22 minor round games and finishing fifth in the AFL’s Rising Star award behind Richmond’s Brett Deledio.
Although not overly tall at 184cm, nor particularly bulky, Adcock is athletic and adept at shutting down mobile forwards with his pace and close-marking style.
Hailing from country Victoria, Adcock showed genuine promise in basketball and athletics before settling on Australian football.

Adcock up in air for opener

HIGHLY rated Lions defender Jed Adcock's bid to erase the memories of 2006 with a solid NAB Cup campaign will go on the line at training tonight.
Adcock managed just eight games last season and must overcome a sore back and train at full pace tonight to be considered for Saturday's season opener against St Kilda in Cairns. He is desperate to take his place in a new-look Lions side that will have multiple captains – Simon Black, Luke Power and Chris Johnson – and is likely to include gun West Aussie youngster Matthew Leuenberger.
TAB Sportsbet has the Lions rank $41 outsiders to win the NAB Cup, but their chances in the opener appear fair with the Saints missing Nick Riewoldt, Aaron Hammil, Matt Maguire and Lenny Hayes.
Adcock limped off the ground late in last Friday's intraclub scratch match at Coorparoo after copping a knee in the back and was unable to train on Monday.
Coach Leigh Matthews said the knock hadn't done any serious damage and he was hopeful Adcock would train and press for selection.
But he said the 21-year-old's injuries were a concern.
"I'm afraid we're all getting too used to seeing Jed limping off, because he's a real high-quality player," Matthews said. "He's kept doing things to himself. He only played half a dozen games last year and he wasn't fit because he had that quad problem.
"If we can get the continuity of training and playing out of him he'll be a really good player."
The 33rd pick in the 2003 draft burst on to the scene in 2005, playing all 22 games and finishing third in the club's best and fairest.
Although primarily used as a defender throughout his 32 games, his pace and decision-making had him earmarked for a run in the midfield.
But last year he was forced to watch as elevated rookies Scott Harding and Cheynee Stiller, and draftees Michael Rischitelli and Matthew Moody, made the most of opportunities in a severely depleted and outgunned Lions.
Adcock severely tore a quad muscle in the final training session before the Lions flew to Victoria for last season's round 1 clash with Geelong.
He was initially out for six weeks, returned for two games but the injury recurred, keeping him out for another month. After two weeks in reserves and one as an emergency, he was back in seniors for the final six games but was never fully fit.

Doesn't seem to be a big issue. Sounds like one of those "he'd play if it was round 1" injuries.

LUCKLESS youngster Jed Adcock will undergo scans today on a possible broken leg that threatens to ruin another AFL season.
The courageous but injury-plagued defender limped off the field late in the third term of Saturday night's seven-point victory over St Kilda in Cairns.
Although just 21 with only 32 games, Adcock is tipped widely as a future captain of the club but his run with injuries is becoming a concern.
Adcock has won admiration from everyone at the Lions for his bravery but coach Leigh Matthews, himself once a fearless competitor, has started to question whether he should play the game with more caution.
"Sometimes your bravery is beyond your physical capability to survive," Matthews said.
"Sometimes with players who attack the ball so gung-ho hard, the question is if you keep hurting yourself, well, discretion becomes the better part of valour.
"He just plays so bravely and his body takes a pounding."
Adcock managed just eight games last season after tearing a quad muscle in a training session on the eve of Brisbane's round 1 clash with Geelong.
He was out for six weeks and returned for two games before the injury recurred, keeping him out for another month.
He returned via the reserves for two weeks and was then named as an emergency before forcing his way back into the seniors for the final six games.
This year has started in a similar fashion. He suffered a knock in the back in the intraclub scratch match 10 days ago and was in doubt for Saturday's clash.
He forced his way into the side by training well last Wednesday but could now face an indefinite period on the sidelines.
Adcock's anticipated presence this season had allowed Matthews to experiment with using the silky-skilled Chris Johnson as a burst player in the midfield and a set-up man across half-forward.
But if today's scans determine an absence of a couple of months, Johnson's poise and decision-making will be needed to bolster an inexperienced defence.

He is fit and in form. How much help he'll be to DT will depend on how Leigh plays him. If he plays more of a shutdown job deep in defense, he might get 15 touches a game. If he plays more halfback, he'll get 20+ touches on occasions. In one game last year he got 29 touches.

Young Lion leading charge to restore lost pride
Dan Koch
April 14, 2007
IT may seem strange but young star Jed Adcock insists it was during the dying moments of Brisbane's loss to Carlton in the NAB Cup final that he became convinced the Lions were back.
Over the past two seasons, Brisbane has not been a happy club, with constant off-field controversy and disastrous on-field results fracturing a playing group divided by those with and without premiership medallions. But even when the game was out of the Lions' reach, heads remained high, the talk stayed positive -- something Adcock said the team addressed during a meeting at the start of the pre-season to establish the standards expected of every member of this new pride of Lions.
When asked if the mood of the club differed from last season, Adcock was brutally honest. "It is," he said. "It is something we are trying to focus on this year. We thought if we are happy, then we will still be playing good footy.
"We did a lot during the pre-season trying to make this group one and bridge the gap (between the premiership players and non-premiership players) and I think we have done that.
"In my four years at the club this is as close a group as I have been part of."
While he has not earned the accolades of fellow young guns like Justin Sherman and Michael Rischitelli, within the confines of the club he is seen as a leader.
When coach Leigh Matthews was looking for someone to lead a backline, robbed of more than 1000 games' experience following the departures of Justin Leppitsch, Mal Michael, Darryl White, Martin Pike and Brad Scott in recent years, he turned to Adcock.
"I believe that you can be a man at 20 and a boy at 30 and certainly, Jed is a man at a young age," Matthews said of the impressive 21-year-old.
"At the moment he is probably leading the backline, along with Robert Copeland.
"We missed him most of last year through injury, but he is a very, very good player, we think."
After a stunning 2005 season, in which he played all 22 games and finished third in the club's best and fairest award, Adcock, who is from Maryborough in Victoria, managed just eight appearances in 2006, frustrated by two serious quadriceps strains.
However, Adcock is looking at it as a blessing in disguise, with the break enabling him to rid himself of a host of other niggling problems and complete his first full pre-season since arriving at the club as the 33rd pick of the 2003 national draft.
A former Victorian athletics champion, Adcock entered this season preparing for a move into the midfield. But Matthews said Adcock's ability to control the Lions' defensive set-up out of a back pocket and direct Brisbane's play like a quarterback, hitting targets across half forward with pinpoint accuracy are too important commodities to risk by moving him into the crowded surrounds of the midfield.
"When you get a very good back third player, you play him in the back third," Matthews said.
"It's like David Wirrpanda and Tadhg Kennelly and guys like that. He is a very good defender, who can play on smalls, he can play on guys slightly taller. He has good composure, good competitiveness."
After two good wins over Hawthorn and St Kilda in the opening two rounds, Adcock and the young Lions face a major step-up in class this weekend when they lock horns with the Swans in Sydney tomorrow.
The 2005 premier will go in favourite, with many pundits still not convinced Matthews has managed to re-invent his team in just 18 months.
However, with Richard Hadley set to make his return from injury, Adcock said there was a quiet confidence within the Lions camp -- one which he believes will drive them to finals football this season.
"I think we all felt about halfway through our pre-season that the new structures we had in place were right and that we were a bit better placed that a lot of people outside of the club probably realised," he said.
"Playing the Swans in Sydney is certainly going to be difficult. It's one of the biggest challenges in the game and it will be a good chance for us to see where we are at."

LIONS young gun Jed Adcock admits Brisbane will have the added pressure of "doing it for Blacky" in Saturday night's Gabba battle against Collingwood.
The desperation to avoid a hat-trick of defeats should be enough motivation for the Lions, but Adcock yesterday said he and his teammates were determined to mark co-captain Simon Black's 200th game with a win over the Magpies. Lions coach Leigh Matthews has also put the onus on his players by saying he hoped Black's milestone would stir a "committed, pressured performance".
"I don't think your mindset changes just because it's Simon Black's 200th, but deep down there's a little bit of 'let's do it for him'," Adcock said.
"Blacky's been a great player for the club for a long time. What he's done for the club is amazing and he deserves to go off in his 200th with a win.
"There probably will be a little bit of pressure."
Adcock said the key to victory over the Magpies was implementing the game plan that went sadly astray in last Saturday's 64-point loss to Essendon at Telstra Dome
"Everyone knew what we wanted to do, but we just couldn't do it," the frustrated defender said.
"When you're turning the ball over at centre-half forward, it comes back down the other end pretty quickly.
"But when we work on our skills and hit the targets when they're there to be hit, the ball won't be coming down so quickly and we won't be caught out of position."
The defeat was the Lions' second on the trot and fourth of an inconsistent season that has included two blocks of two wins followed by two blocks of two losses.
"I think it's just a matter of continuity at training – trying to get players week in, week out training and therefore getting the structures down pat," Adcock said in trying to explain Brisbane's inconsistent form.
Adcock is relishing the likely challenge of matching up against Magpies star Alan Didak.
"Didak is one of the great small forwards in the game. He's a very smart player," the speedy 21-year-old said.
"I'm not sure if I'll take him but I guess there's probably a fair chance."
The chances of injured pair Michael Rischitelli (knee) and Cheynee Stiller (ankle) playing this weekend could depend on their participation in this afternoon's training session at the Gabba.

Complacency cost Lions another defeat: Adcock
12:25:00 PM Sun 20 May, 2007 | Back (javascript:history.go(-1);)
By Catherine Murphy, for lions.com.au
After defying expectations to win four of their first six games, the Lions fell at home last week to Adelaide and with Saturday’s defeat at Telstra Dome have now slipped to a 4-4 record. COMPLACENCY is to blame for the Brisbane Lions’ two-game losing streak, Lions defender Jed Adcock said after Saturday’s 64-point loss to Essendon. "We were probably feeling good with ourselves and probably got a little bit complacent after the Freo game up in Brisbane," Adcock told lions.com.au The Essendon score which most epitomises Adcock's summary of the Lions’ problems was probably Bachar Houli's second-quarter goal. After the Lions struggled to move the ball forward, a swift Essendon counter-attack saw Houli capitalise at the other end. after the match. "We've had two bad games in a row now. I think we just want to put this behind us, work hard on our skills at training and look forward to next week." The talented defender, who has averaged more than 20 possessions so far this year, including 30 last week, was making no excuses for the Lions' lacklustre performance. "They were better than us, full stop. They ran the ball really well. We had a lot of turnovers that you can't have at this level and they scored on our turnovers and ran the ball through the middle," Adcock said. "It's so costly at this level," Adcock said. “We're streaming through the middle, one bad kick and it's on the rebound straight back to the other side. We need to work on our skills and hopefully we can get up to scratch next week.” The Bombers won the game in the third quarter, breaking an arm-wrestle to outscore the Lions by six goals to nil. Adcock didn’t enjoy the experience. "It was shocking, especially when you're playing back there and the ball’s going in over your head. In every aspect they were harder, harder at the ball. I think we matched them in inside 50s but we turned the ball over." The 21-year-old said the pre-match hype surrounding Mal Michael was exaggerated. "We have no hard feelings with Mal. He was a fantastic player. Obviously we would have liked him to stay up in Brisbane, but it didn't work out, so all the best to him down here."

Defender Jed Adcock, who has been one of the few shining lights this season, said the younger players lacked the confidence to take a risk and suggested it may be because they didn't feel secure in their position in the team.
"The last few weeks we've gotten slower and slower and taken less and less chances," Adcock said. "But the young kids now know they're not going to be taken off.
"We're not winning now by not taking chances so we're going to take chances and if we don't win, we don't win, but at least we're doing something pro-active, not reactive.
"The leadership has put it to us that this is what we want to do and we won't be blasted for doing it if we stuff up."

How good is it seeing Adcock streaming down the corridor with ball in hand? He is just a class player both defensively and offensively, and he makes our midfield look so much more potent. I wouldn't be surprised if his back pocket days are over and he became a permanent midfielder.

Adcock set to replace Black
Marco Monteverde
July 21, 2007 12:00am
EMERGING star Jed Adcock looms as the likely cover for Brisbane co-captain Simon Black, who has been ruled out of the Lions' clash with Carlton tomorrow.
Black has a knee injury and will miss the Gabba clash. Speedster Scott Harding edged out Richard Hadley as Black's replacement in Brisbane's 22, but it's Adcock, no stranger to a midfield role, who comes closest to emulating the 2002 Brownlow Medallist's toughness, endurance and "in and under" style.

Adcock was great in the midfield again today, and it was terrific to see him showing composure in front of the sticks, both with his set shot and he slotted through a couple on the run too.
Interesting that he seemed to get almost all of his possessions in the first half and a bit. Perhaps this is why they were reluctant to move him into the midfield because he may not have the fitness to keep it up for 4 quarters.

Moving on up
10:06 AM Wed 25 July, 2007
By Simon White
for lions.com.au
YOUNG Lion Jed Adcock says he is enjoying life away from his customary defensive role and hopes to play the rest of the season in the midfield.
Adcock has long being regarded as an onballer in the making and the recent good form of the Lions’ defence has allowed Leigh Matthews the luxury of moving him up the ground.
His pace and ability to find the football were on display at the Gabba on Sunday, as the Lions overcame the absence of Brownlow medallist Simon Black to beat Carlton by 117 points.
Adcock finished with 23 disposals and a career-high three goals, including successive majors on the run from just inside 50m early in the third quarter.
“It’s a bit of a change from the start of the year. But the last few weeks I’ve been able to play through midfield and have a bit more responsibility and it’s been good,” Adcock told lions.com.au.
“Hopefully I can play the rest of the year there. I think at the start of the year we were maybe a bit vulnerable down back.
“But with [Joel] Patfull going down there, Joel Macdonald coming back and [Troy] Selwood being able to go into defence and really hold it together, it’s allowed me to move up the ground a bit.”
If all things go to plan, Adcock will notch his 50th AFL game at the Gabba in round 18 against the Kangaroos.
The 21-year-old exudes a quiet confidence in all he does, but admits he wondered how on earth he would ever crack it for a senior berth when he first arrived at the club after the 2003 season.
The Lions had just won a third straight flag and were primed for a fourth – something they very nearly achieved, going down to Port Adelaide in the 2004 grand final.
“When I first came, I thought I’d never get a game,” he said.
“But the bonus with coming here was that you knew you were going to learn from the best.
“And you do. Every player you look at has been there and done it and they are all so professional when it comes to playing AFL footy, both on and off the field.
“And then you’ve got the coaching staff to back it up.”
While Jonathan Brown’s 10 goals were the major talking point following the Carlton win, Adcock also had praise for small forward Rhan Hooper.
Hooper had an interrupted summer and did not play a senior game until the round 14 win over West Coast in Perth.
But he has been lively in his three games to date and ignited the crowd on Sunday afternoon with four opportunistic second-half goals.
“Rhan brings a lot of spunk and I think there are only a couple of players at the club who can do the kinds of thing he does – probably only him and Jared Brennan,” Adcock said.
“His natural pace and his desire to get after opponents is second to none. That’s why he is out there and he’s getting the rewards for it now.”

IMO the GPS data was most interesting for Adcock. He didn't cover a lot of territory. His heart rate was at maximum level about 2 minutes into the game. He had decent pace, but nothing exceptional. His G Force (whatever the hell that is) was way down.
You'd think he had poor game based on that, yet he dominated. IMO that tells me he is not as fit as the other midfielders going around, but he is making up for it with footy smarts, eg. knowing where to run, when to run hard, etc.
He's also taking advantage of his opportunities in front of goal and has kicked 7 in the last 2 weeks.

Whenever people at the club speak about Adcock they seem to mention how much his fitness has improved since he joined the club. Therefore, i think his ability to run, etc will just continue to improve and he will go from strength to strength......come on Jed i need 3 brownlow vote performances for the rest of the year - then i could be a very rich man!

Adcock a born leader

JED Adcock will run through a milestone banner at the Gabba this Saturday - just as all players do on their special occasion.
What is surprising is that it is only 50 games, because about 40 were played under the tag "captain in waiting", such is his maturity and leadership.
It's a weight of expectation that would cause some to buckle.
Jonathan Brown was once in the same boat. He was first mentioned as a future captain as early as 2001, his second year of senior footy.
By 2004, Lions skipper Michael Voss could see the end coming and anointed Brown as his successor.
History showed Brown had to wait until his seventh year of footy to become captain – and then he had to share the job with Chris Johnson, Nigel Lappin, Simon Black and Luke Power.
For the six years he was the "captain in waiting" he acted like a captain anyway – just as the Lions hope Adcock will.
And to date he has.
Brown says Adcock has captain stamped all over him and has no doubts he'll handle it.
He also says Adcock has won the respect of his peers because of the way he plays the game on the field and his conduct off it.
"I'm pretty good mates with Jed and I can tell you it will never be an issue," he said.
"He's just a natural leader. He'll lead by example on and off the field for his whole career.
"He won't be bothered by it. He's got that confidence the great leaders like Vossie and Blackie have."
From day one, the 20-year-old has played like a 10-year veteran.
He finished third in the club's best and fairest in 2005, after starting the season with two games under his belt, but his quest to take his game to another level stalled last year because of quad injuries.
This season has been relatively injury free and he will again be a contender for the Merrett-Murray medal, and possibly All-Australian.
It is a statement that may surprise a few outside Brisbane – but his omission from the all-star team would be a greater shock to those within the club.
"I've often said in this competition your reputation trails your performance by about six months," says Lions coach Leigh Matthews.
Matthews believes it takes most footballers 50 games to become consistent performers at senior level. A few weeks ago, when Jared Brennan passed the mark, he said he hoped the next 50 would be better than the first.
Adcock may not be the teenage prodigy West Coast's Chris Judd was, but the gap between his good and bad games is very small.
Another Matthews maxim is that you don't rob a strength to plug a weakness, which is why he has until recently resisted the urge to take Adcock from general of the defence into the midfield.
It wasn't until Matthews believed Adcock's progress had stalled that he made the change.
"That was enough to put him in the midfield and he has been really good for us," he said. "He is a very good-quality player."

Lions no longer playing scared: Adcock
5:53 PM Wed 1 August, 2007
By Jim Morton
FUTURE leader Jed Adcock says the Lions will live and die by the fearless approach which has transformed their season.
Adcock credited a fresh attack-at-all-costs attitude for the amazing revival which sees the Brisbane Lions, walking the finals tightrope, eying a fifth straight win over the Kangaroos on Saturday night.
The defender-turned-midfielder said fears of making errors had stifled the young outfit during a mid-year, seven-match drought.
"For six weeks we played scared," Adcock said.
"We weren't willing to make a mistake. At least now we're getting the ball, we're playing on and we're taking a chance.
"If we make a mistake, we make a mistake, but at least we're having a go.
"It makes it a hard task for the defenders in their opposition."
Adcock, to notch his 50th-game milestone against the Kangaroos at the Gabba, said Brisbane's renewed confidence put them back on the track they were heading with a 4-2 record after round six.
He denied pressure would again consume them despite big wins over West Coast, Melbourne, Carlton and Collingwood reviving finals hopes.
"[Finals] are possible but our backs are against the wall, we have to win five out of five or four out of five," he said.
"I don't think we've got any pressure on us at all.
"We're not in the finals at the moment, we're sitting 11th."
Adcock, 21, is spoken about as a captain-in-waiting at the Lions with coach Leigh Matthews speaking in glowing terms about his football nous and maturity.
The North Ballarat junior has been arguably Brisbane's most consistent player and he's taken to the move upfield from the back pocket like a duck to water.
A career-high four-goal haul in the 93-point MCG thumping of the Magpies also highlighted his attacking ability.
He rated last weekend's win up with his 2004 debut and the West Coast upset as his most treasured moments in the AFL.
But Adcock doubts captaincy honours will be coming his way in the near future.
"Hopefully one day, I think every young player aspires to it at some stage but I'm still only 21," he said.
"And when you have players like [Jonathan] Brown and [Jamie] Charman who are just a couple of years older than me they will be around for a lot of years to come."
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/3765/adcocksz0.jpg

The TV commentators seemed to diagnose 'shoulder/stinger' just looking at him. The radio coverage (MMM I think) at the ground reported 'hyper-extension of the elbow' about 15 minutes after it happened. I'd be more inclined to believe that -- particularly looking at the strapping on his elbow in the photo above.

Adcock among the elite
9:41 AM Wed 5 September, 2007
By Simon White
ALL-AUSTRALIAN candidate and emerging Brisbane Lions star Jed Adcock says he will target improved endurance as he looks to build on a career-best 2007.
Adcock, one of three Lions in a 40-man All-Australian shortlist announced on Tuesday, made the move from defence to midfield mid-way through the season and finished with an average of almost 21 possessions a game.
The 21-year-old will now challenge himself to produce the kind of aerobic feats for which teammate Simon Black is well known.
“Probably the main thing I’ll be working on is endurance,” Adcock said.
“I’m not too far from where I have to be. Having a full pre-season really helped me this year and I was really fit going into the season.
“But I do need to pick up the endurance a bit and just make sure my body stays intact, as it did this year when I played every game. Last year I only played eight.”
Not only is Adcock aiming to take his game to another level again in 2008, but he also believes he and his similarly-aged teammates must pick up more of the leadership slack.
The Lions have a cluster of players around the 50-game experience mark – including Jared Brennan, Richard Hadley, Joel Macdonald, Daniel Merrett and Troy Selwood – and 54-gamer Adcock says they must help guide youngster graduating to senior ranks.
Two vastly experienced players were lost to the club on the weekend when Chris Johnson and Chris Scott played their final AFL games against Geelong.
“We need to get more involved in leadership – not only on-field but off-field too,” Adcock said.
“The 22- and 23-year-olds need to step up now and show the way for the young guys - the first and second year guys coming through.
“Everyone knows what Jonathan Brown, Nigel Lappin, Luke Power and Simon Black can do but it is up to us to show the way as well.”
Adcock, who has taken on responsibility of organising the playing group’s off-season trip, said the Lions should be enthused about the second half of the just completed campaign, in which they won five and drew another of the last nine games.
But he cautioned against over-enthusiasm, given the Lions went seven weeks without a win prior to the season-turning round 14 upset of West Coast at Subiaco.
“Looking back we should have won a couple more games than we did, but that’s in the past and we can’t change it,” he said.
“We learned from our mistakes and played some really good footy in the second half of the year.
“It is disappointing not to be playing finals but, looking towards the future, things are very positive.
“We’ve been able to beat the third, fourth, fifth and sixth teams and lost by a goal to the team that’s second.
“We were really competitive and hopefully we can improve further on that next year.”
Also named in the All-Australian shortlist were gun centre half-forward and Coleman medalist Jonathan Brown and ultra-consistent midfielder Nigel Lappin.

Adcock is very unlucky not to make the All-Australian side IMO. He was in the mid-year AA team so maybe the move to the midfield worked against him. Still think they could have found a spot for him on the bench at least.

I would bet money on him being in there next year - he will need a season of like 80% 2007 standard to be certain of a spot (Gilbee-style)

Once Jed improves on his fitness over the off season, he will emerge as an elite midfielder.

Victorians Clubs Unlikely To Add Adcock

Jed Adcock had a big season for the Brisbane Lions and a big contract was expected to follow. Whether that was with Brisbane or another team was something that could have become the second biggest story of trade week.
According to this report, Brisbane is very close to retaining Adcock. Adcock is probably seen as a future leader in the midfield, taking over from Black and Power when they retire.
That is another name to cross off the list for the preseason draft. There are few quality players still uncontracted.

BRISBANE has moved a step closer to securing the group of youngsters considered crucial to the club's future, with emerging star Jed Adcock poised to agree to a new deal.
With Jamie Charman, Daniel Merrett and Mitch Clark already locked away, Adcock was the club's top contractual priority.
The North Ballarat boy was the subject of a flurry of trade rumours last week after a Melbourne radio station said he was set to return to Victoria.
By the end of that day word was out he was in negotiations with the Kangaroos.
But Adcock told The Courier-Mail there was no basis to the claims and he was happy in Brisbane.
Adcock has told the club he wishes to stay and the final details of his new contract are being discussed this week.
It is expected he will sign his new deal next week. It is believed he has asked for a three-year contract. The 21-year-old is considered a captain of the future and is sure to figure prominently in this year's Merrett-Murray medal.
Adcock's commitment is a huge boost to the club, which took some important strides this season.
One of the key reasons behind the form reversal was Adcock's move from defence into the midfield to join stars Simon Black, Luke Power and Nigel Lappin.
Adcock finished third in the best and fairest in his breakthrough season of 2005 when he played every game out of defence.
But his career temporarily stalled last season when he managed just eight games because of a quad muscle injury.

Form reversal?
Quality Hamilton! Such a mistake makes me doubt the rest of the article, a little, without direct quotes. With that being said I never have had any doubt of Jed leaving.
