Tyler to bolster backs

lions.com.au

North Ballarat Rebels key position prospect Matt Tyler kept a keen eye on the 2006 AFL National Draft coverage to see whether any of his mates would be selected by an AFL Club. To his surprise, Brisbane Lions recruiting manager Craig Brittain read out Tyler’s name as the Club’s fifth selection (pick 54 overall).

“I was pretty shocked actually,” Tyler said. “I was just watching the draft to see how my mates went.”

His initial shock soon turned to excitement as he came to realise that he would soon be fulfilling his AFL dream.

“I am really looking forward to the challenge and all the new people I will meet up there. It’s a great opportunity,” he said.

Tyler was the only natural key position prospect selected by the Lions and, in time, will develop into an exciting backman. Still only slightly built, he is a great reader of the play and shows great composure under pressure.

Tyler was one of 30 young players offered a prestigious scholarship from the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) as part of the AIS-AFL Academy, where he received expert personal and skill development.

He served his AFL apprenticeship with the North Ballarat Rebels where he played 18 matches 2006. Although played mainly as a tall defender, his height, endurance and versatility enabled him to play in a variety of different roles.

At times throughout the TAC Cup season, Tyler was used with success as both a tall marking option up forward and on the wing. Such is his versatility that in a match against the Oakleigh Chargers this year, Tyler was moved forward and collected almost 20 possessions, pulled in 13 marks and booted five goals.

Tyler feels he is better suited down back and likens his playing style to that of Essendon full-back Dustin Fletcher.

“I would probably prefer to play across half-back, but I’m only lightly framed at the moment so I might have to start out on a flank. I would like to think of myself as a hard running defender with good aerobic capacity,” he said.

“After a few years, I would like to play as a key position in the backline.”

While Tyler would love to make his senior debut for the Lions in 2007, he remained realistic when setting his goals for next year.

“For the upcoming year I am just hoping to play consistent footy. I’ll most likely start the season in the twos but it would be great to get a game in the NAB Cup pre-season competition.

“Hopefully later in the year I can make my senior AFL debut,” he said.

Tyler arrives in Brisbane on Sunday 3 December together with his fellow draftees to commence his pre-season training with the team.

He will be living with rising star Jed Adcock, who also played with the North Ballarat Rebels prior to joining the Lions via the 2003 National Draft. Adcock will be able to help Tyler adapt to the Queensland lifestyle having moved to Brisbane himself from the country Victorian town of Maryborough.

I think the role of a recruitment officer is to pick them before they are picked by someone else.

You claimed he would be a good player after the Lions had selected him.

Why didn't you mention him before the draft?

Agreed Brown Dog. Every match Roofie has played so far (including intra-club), he's shown something to like. There's just a lot to be impressed about the way he runs, collects the ball and his kicking. As long he can try to be consistent and keep up the intensity, I'm sure he'll get a few games for the seniors this year. :thumbsu:

Agree. He looks a very natural runner (ie. he is beautifully balanced and it looks effortless), he's quick, he's got endurance and he's mobile. He's also got good skills, courage and a ton of confidence.

Could play a number of roles, so it will be interesting to see where he ends up playing.

End of Season Player Review

Despite being drafted as a key defensive player, the former North Ballarat Rebel was trialled as a forward in the NAB cup, impressing many with his athleticism for a KPP and his ability to find the goals.

A re-occurring hamstring injury however would severly curtail his season, and rob him of a likely senior debut. In his limited game time for Suncoast, Tyler gave glimpses of his potential to hold down a senior key defensive position in the future. His athleticism and size has led to many comparing him to Essendon veteran Dustin Fletcher.

Super-sized Tyler wants to go back
Article from: http://www.news.com.au/images/sources/sm_sundaymail.gif

January 05, 2008 11:00pm

BULKED-UP Lion Matt Tyler wants to emulate Daniel Merrett's stunning transition from key forward to hard-nosed defender.
Having lost most of his first year in Brisbane to injury, the teenager has identified the wide open centre halfback position as the most likely launching pad for a senior career. "The forward line is looking pretty strong, with Daniel Bradshaw coming back, Mitchell Clark playing well and Brownie there as well," Tyler said.
"With that being the case there might be more of an opportunity down back."
Brisbane recruited Tyler from North Ballarat – the same country Victorian region that yielded Tim Notting and Jed Adcock – with the club's fourth pick in the 2006 national draft.
At a slightly built 194cm, he had played much of his junior football as a key defender but also showed promise as a mobile forward.
Coach Leigh Matthews trialled Tyler in last year's NAB Cup where he kicked the deciding goal in the club's win against St Kilda in Cairns.
He was closing in on a senior debut in the early rounds of the regular season when back and hamstring injuries grounded him for the year.
"He showed some promise at the beginning of last year and then a back stress fracture wrecked his season," Matthews said. "And he's not out of the woods yet."
Pilates and resistance training have helped the youngster return to the paddock.
Many of his young teammates have muscled up since last season, but it is Tyler whose growth has been most noticeable.
He has grown 2cm since he arrived at the Gabba and now weighs 90kg, an increase of 4kg.
Tyler said intense weight sessions – he has raised his bench press personal best by 15kg to 100kg – was all about adding the extra beef required to stand the competition's powerhouse forwards.
"It was pretty frustrating last season because all I wanted to do was play footy," said Tyler who shares an apartment with fellow 2006 draftees Sam Sheldon and Albert Proud.
"I'd like to go back (to defence) one day but it's a matter of when I'm strong enough. This year will all be about getting my body right."
Matthews said there was no doubt the 19-year-old, when fully fit, would emerge as a key position contender.
"He's got the height and good running ability," Matthews said.
"He's a bit like Daniel Merrett. Two years ago he was a developing forward, now he's a promising fullback. Where they end up depends on them."

I firmly believe he is our future CHB now. He shows grit and determination. 196cm and 90kg is excellent for a second year player. He'll add another 4 next season.

This will probaly see Mills gone in a few seasons... with Henderson developed as a forward.

I expect Tyler to play a bit next year, too.

His physique and athletic attributes seem similar to Egan of the Cats :D
He's definitely one I'll look forward to watching in the pre-season matches - if Matt can stand up at CHB our spine has that formidable look about it once again

If Mills can improve his kicking I'd still like to see him kept on the list because of his other attributes, but if that Henderson kid ends up being as good as I think he can be then the coaching staff will have a "pleasant" headache ;)

That's the first time I've heard about Tyler's stress fractures - the website listed him as hamstring.

Tyler could play CHB, but I can see him potentially playing CHF ahead of Henderson, in a mould similar to Riewoldt who would lead onto the wing to create a target.

But at the moment, if Bradshaw returns as expected, there's precious few KPP positions available. It's hard to tell how it'll turn out.

If Tyler ends up as a KPP in our side, it will go down as one of our greatest recruiting decisions ever.

I had forgotten how close he was to senior selection. He was named as an emergency in the early part of last season. That is amazing for a first year KPP.

I disagree Warwick. I think we will have to be patient with Tyler. From that article the most pertinent comment IMO was:

"He showed some promise at the beginning of last year and then a back stress fracture wrecked his season," Matthews said. "And he's not out of the woods yet."

He has spent a lot of time recovering from injury and I think he'll need another year of development to be ready. If he can get his body right and play a few games here and there he will have done well.

xplo
13th January 2008, 08:16
People forget that even even big, bad, Stawb missed most of his first 12 months with glandular fever. That may have been a blessing in allowing his body to settle in a bit without the constant crash and bash.

Leppa did a knee in his teens. Mitch's battles have been well-documented. Leuey came with OP. Hendo had a busted leg. Big Lenny Clark hardly got on the park. Most have had some kind of lower body stress or bone problem.

These guys have bones that have got longer but not denser, leaving them vulnerable to breaks and chips. They also have a muscle/ligament system that hasn't had time to adjust to the extra torque longer bones produce. They're effectively V8 motors running on a 4 cylinder gearbox and suspension.

Millsy and Wood have probably been the exceptions. Millsy has always been a great trainer and has that endurance athlete's hardness. Wood might have just got lucky.

Agreed. My KPP set up for 2011:

FF Brown

Hows Matty tracking lately ?!
Hoping to see him out with Garner for our backline next year.. I guess it will give us more options - releasing Patfull, Roe and Drummond to be part of midfield rotation and even in forward line.
Feel Roe would fit the bill for the third tall. Bigger bodied midfielders (Brennan style) would be plenty in our squad if this happens.
