I use to play with Daniel Dzufer when he played for Caloundra. I caught up with him on the weekend. I was talking about what it is like with the Lions and whatnot. The convo eventually moved on to who his roommate is, and he is rooming with Kiel. He said Kiel is an absolute gun.
Great foot skills and a real good football brain. Looks to be a great pickup for the Lions.

Thanks for the inside word Corrosion. Did Danny say he is enjoying his time at the club so far?

First glimpse I've caught of Hadyn for a while at the intraclub and was impressed with his work around the packs, although he was mostly playing as a small forward. He's certainly got the physique for senior football. Appears destined for a NAB cup berth based on his intraclub performance.

Speaking of which, from Friday's Gold Coast Bulletin
Young Lion is ready to roar
Nick Smart
GOLD Coast youngster Haydn Kiel has already raised a few eyebrows during his short time at the Brisbane Lions den, and he will be out to make a big impression when he plays in tonight's intra-club match.
After what has been a long and torturous summer of training, fans will get their first real look at the Lions of 2007.
For Kiel, taken by the Lions on the club's rookie list in December, the game is an opportunity to make a big impression on the coaching staff.
He said he is looking forward to strutting his stuff in Lions colours for the first time.
``It will be good to try and make an impression on everyone,'' said the 18-year-old.
``It is the first time we have had a sort of actual game, so it will be good to have a hit-out with the boys.
``I have been playing most of the little games we have been doing at training as a kind of small forward, so maybe I might line up there.''
The speedy winger has been training hard and has impressed many at the club already with his commitment and work ethic.
While injury hasn't been too far away for the Lions recently, Kiel said he is fighting fit.
``I feel good actually, most of the first year boys have all got niggling groins but I have been pretty sweet,'' he said.
The two-time Southport Sharks premiership player said it has been a big step up from AFLQ to the big league.
``We have had a full month of really hard stuff and then we went to Community Camp where it kind of calmed down down a little bit,'' said Kiel.
The intra-club match, to be played at Giffin Park (Coorparoo), gets under way at 6pm.

Had some good touches in the opening NAB cup game, winning some admirers from the Channel 7 commentary box.
Unfortunately he tweaked a hammy by the looks of thing, so should be out for a few weeks. That'll learn him from making comments like this:

Out with another hammy injury:
Haydn Kiel (Hamstring) - 3-5 weeks.
Strained his hamstring in the Suncoast Lions' loss to Broadbeach in round 3 of the AFLQ season.
A real shame given how well he went in the early pre-season. Is it a re-injury of the same hammy?

End of Season Player Review
Unlucky not to be selected in the national draft, Kiel slipped to the rookie list probably because of his (lack of) size. He was playing some good footy at the start of the year and was considered a good chance to be elevated to the senior list if an opportunity arose. However recurring hamstring injuries frustrated him throughout the year and his season never really gained any momentum.

Is this man the new Voss?

THE man who guided Michael Voss through the first steps of what became one of Australian football's greatest careers says the Lions may have unearthed the premiership skipper's clone in rookie Haydn Kiel.
Queensland coaching great Norm Dare was the Bears mentor when Voss, a 16-year-old scholarship holder, first started making the trip down to Carrara to train with the fledgling AFL club. Years later he was the coach of a Southport premiership side that featured a teenaged Kiel. The similarities between the champion Brisbane premiership skipper and the young Gold Coast goal sneak struck Dare immediately.
But where Voss couldn't wait to get into the action, Dare said Kiel took some convincing to leave his school-aged mates behind.
"He was very similar in stature to Michael Voss at the same age. They were instinctive footballers and every time you saw them they had a footy in their hands," he said.
"He (Kiel) always wanted to double up. We had our work cut out trying to stop him heading back to train with his under-18s mates.
"I remember Vossie was the same, always running water or messages for other teams after he'd played too.
"As a youngster he had the same passion as Voss but not the same maturity, but once we convinced him to step up to the seniors there was no stopping him. And they shared another trait – the up-tempo training never bothered him.
"I've always thought he could be a really good AFL player."
Kiel played in senior Southport premierships sides in 2005 and '06, and even when he first stepped up just weeks into his 17th year, he was a stand-out.
"I rated him very highly," Dare said. "You could see straight away he could play. You could just tell he was a one-touch player with an ability to influence games."
Dare said the Lions might have pulled off a drafting coup securing Kiel as a rookie in the 2006 draft when he had been overlooked by other clubs.
"Brisbane read the draft very well. They knew they could get him as a rookie because other clubs were going to overlook him. It was a really smart piece of work," he said.
Kiel played the first game of last season's NAB Cup and had an immediate impact, kicking the first goal of the game.
But he finished on the sidelines with a torn hamstring, setting the scene for a frustrating first year. Another hamstring injury just into his comeback and then a badly dislocated shoulder, which required a reconstruction, ensured he had no chance to press for a senior spot when injury struck other players.
This season started better. Last week against Essendon he booted two goals and took a strong mark overhead – showing no effects from his shoulder reconstruction.
Tonight he has another chance to impress against the Kangaroos, but the reality for a rookie is he cannot play AFL regular season games unless he is on the senior list.
"It is tough, being on the rookie list . . ," Kiel said.
"But there is always going to be an opening and that is what drives you, to make sure that when an opportunity arises you're able to take it.
"I definitely feel I'm ready for senior footy."
Norm Dare agrees.

Comparisons with champions are almost the last thing you need as a youngster trying to get a game.
However in this case, the irony might be that Vossy was so good, that no-one is honestly going to peg the kid as the next Voss. In some ways I think that might be better than getting 'the next Akermanis' or 'next Lappin' tag.

For first round picks I wouldn't like to see these comparisons because they have enough expectation on them as it is. For a rookie though it's not necessarily a bad thing because the odds are stacked against them and it lets them know they are being noticed. Plus, as xplo said, no one is going to take it that seriously.

I must admit I was pretty impressed with the way he played last Saturday, but to compare him to the greatest player to play for our club is a bit hard considering he isn't even on the senior list yet.
I am pretty confident he will make his senior debut this year (If there is a chance to promote him, and to be honest I hope we have no injuries, so he may have to wait till 2009) But there is a lot of water to go under the bridge yet before we even know if he can get to the top level, let alone perform in it.

I'm not sure the comparison is based on ability. More on work ethic and enthusiasm from my reading. I'm a rather large fan of Keily's. Hope he gets a crack soon

That's what I thought too.
From what I've seen, he's not as athletic as Voss, not as skilled, not as big and not as good a reader of the game - and they are comparisons with Vossy at the same age. That's no disrespect to Kiel because Voss is far and away the most outstanding footballer this state has produced. I would argue that Voss at 20 was virtually the complete player.

What is his best position? As a small forward, a tagger, a ball extractor? He sounds a bit like a jack of all trades but a master of none.

He's got a strange build. He's nuggetty enough to be an inside player but does his best work when given some space IMO.

Rules do Sharks a favour
Terry Wilson
05Apr08
COMPETITION rules have forced dual Southport premiership player Haydn Kiel back to his old club for today's showdown with 2006 grand final rivals Zillmere at Fankhauser Reserve.
Kiel, a rookie-listed AFL player with Brisbane, is available for the Sharks because the Lions have too many players at the moment.
Under AFLQ rules, the Brisbane seconds are able to field a maximum of 16 listed players in their seconds side, which plays under the Suncoast Lions banner.
With 18 listed players available, the Lions had to give up Kiel to the Sharks, under rules which stipulate that any rookies with local ties go back to their AFLQ club of origin.
Before being rookie-listed by the Lions for the 2007 season, Kiel was a member of Southport's premiership sides in 2005 and 2006, where he emerged as a quality midfielder.
Kiel's return has cost recruit Brad Langtry a spot in the side and exciting Kapun Morris is in for Shane Bourke.

Kiel is hip and miss for Southport
Terry Wilson
July 12th, 2008
SLIGHT hip injury to Haydn Kiel could avoid a ticklish selection poser for Southport in their big clash against premiers Mt Gravatt at Fankhauser Reserve today.
The Sharks were set to fly in the face of the Brisbane Lions and play AFL rookie-listed Kiel in the seconds because of an embarrassment of depth.
But Kiel contacted Southport football manager Jason Cotter late yesterday afternoon and told him he was nursing a slight hip flexor injury and that he may be better off resting. If Kiel is available, he is likely to be used in the reserves simply because of the Sharks' superb form and depth.
Coach Craig Crowley and fellow selectors are loath to make any changes to free up a spot for Kiel, a Shark product who has appeared four times with the club this season and was a member of their 2006 premiership side.
Because of the situation at the Brisbane Lions, with 43 of 46 players available, the Lions drop their rookie-listed players back to their AFLQ clubs of origin when they have 16 or more listed players available for the AFLQ.
"This has nothing to do with him personally, it's just at the moment the side has been up for five weeks and is playing a good brand of footy," said Crowley.
"It will hurt us terribly to not play him if he is available because he is one of ours, but there are so many in reserve grade who deserve their chance in top grade here."

What's up with this guy? At the start of last year he showed signs of being a gun player, and was talked up a bit before being injured for large parts of the year. Haven't heard too much about him since.
For those who've seen ressie games, how has he been going? Any chance of getting a senior game this year?
